Chapter 1235 678: Mark Down on His Luck (2)
Setting off again, Jimmy drove with Julia following Mark's car straight to Queens. Jimmy wasn't interested in this murder case; his current interest was in the person who filed the complaint.
From Mark and their description, Mark just took a glance inside without face-to-face contact with their people, merely confirming whether there was surveillance in the backyard that could provide them with some clues.
Indeed, he violated the rules, and it could even be said he broke the law. But under normal circumstances, the handling of the complaint should not be like this. The identity of the complainant must be unusual. However, Jimmy couldn't directly ask the people from OPR who filed the complaint, so he let Julia check it according to the address.
Upon arrival, Mark searched for a while before confirming the house number. They didn't take action but all sat in Jimmy's car waiting for Julia's investigation.
Julia, experienced in researching materials, quickly got the result: "Found it, the house is registered under Olivia Williams. Her husband is Liam Williams, a senior assistant prosecutor at the New York District Attorney's Office."
She continued her investigation, "Wait, there's new information. Their registered permanent address is in the Upper West Side of Manhattan; this is just one of their properties."
Jimmy nodded, and now it made sense. The New York District Attorney's Office, unlike the Federation Prosecutor's Office which often deals with the FBI, handles crimes that are state and below. However, everyone works and lives in New York, and such a person certainly counts as a powerful figure. If they complained, it's understandable for OPR to take action.
Jimmy stared at the house, smiling, "Julia, contact Prosecutor Williams, confirm who is currently living in this house, and whether they rented it out. Contact him under the guise of our investigation."
Julia looked at Jimmy: "Anything else?"
Jimmy: "Let's see the results first."
Julia picked up the phone and dialed Prosecutor Williams' number, the information was right in front of her, naturally, the phone details were too.
The phone conversation was simple. An FBI Homicide Team agent called his phone. After verifying identities, he didn't hide anything; the house wasn't rented out, but it was currently used by his wife's brother, and he and his wife wouldn't live there.
Jimmy signaled Julia to hang up the phone. After considering for a while, he said, "Now it's obvious. Mark, your act of climbing the back gate into the backyard startled the prosecutor's brother-in-law, who used the prosecutor's name to complain to the FBI. Because of Williams's prosecutor identity, our OPR started an internal investigation.
So the question is, why is he so agitated just because you climbed over the wall? Any thoughts?"
Jimmy smiled as he looked at Mark and Julia. Julia was quick to react, "There's something wrong with him, and there's something wrong with the house."
Mark also nodded, maybe deliberately leaving Julia to speak first, but anyway, now both their opinions were consistent.
Jimmy: "Hmm, what do you plan to do?"
Mark: "Let's figure out the reason first, I'd like to monitor him for a while."
Jimmy: "What about the murder case?"
Mark: "We still need to investigate this place."
Jimmy: "Alright, work with peace of mind. Mark, when you go back, first find OPR and deal with them."
Julia, submit an application, bring over a surveillance team to watch him, and also go to the power company to retrieve the electricity usage of this house. Then continue with the case investigation; we'll wait for the surveillance team to report."
Jimmy waved his hand, signaling Mark to return to his car. The three of them headed back to the office again.
Although none of them approached the house, Jimmy already pinpointed the problem. The basement of that house and a small room had several racks full of leafy plants. That setup was too familiar for him, there's no need to check inside.
The surveillance team is there to ensure he doesn't escape. The trump card is the electricity usage data Jimmy instructed Julia to obtain, directly solidifying evidence, breaking in to arrest.
This could be major or minor. If it were someone else, they might be at their wits' end right now. Jimmy's hit the mark by chance. Originally, he wanted to find clues and try to use his connections to resolve the incident. But now it seems a better solution is available, adding some work for them and possibly even gaining a favor along the way.
Jimmy wasn't familiar with the New York District Attorney's Office, but NYPD definitely was. Nia's casework required submitting for prosecution with the District Attorney's Office. During a phone call with Nia in the evening, he asked about it casually, but Nia had barely any interaction with this Williams. That's normal, with tens of thousands in the NYPD, not everyone liaises with the district attorney, nor is it restricted to any specific one, as New York DA has over a thousand prosecutors and assistant prosecutors.
But this Williams is already a senior assistant prosecutor, should be useful, right?
After the phone call, Jimmy pondered a bit, checked the time, and then called Kevin, ensuring he was home before heading over.
Kevin opened the door for Jimmy, motioning directly to the study. Jimmy hadn't mentioned on the phone what it was about, but it must be significant for him to call at night.
Kevin: "Tell me, what's the matter?"
Jimmy didn't sit down; instead, he took out red wine and poured it for the two of them, "Are you familiar with the New York DA? There's a senior assistant prosecutor named Liam Williams."
Kevin thought for a moment, "The name rings a bell, but I haven't directly dealt with them much. Is there a problem?"
Jimmy nodded: "Haven't found an issue with him, but someone connected to him might have something going on, which could potentially involve him."
Kevin gestured to stop, "Hold on, let me check first."
Kevin walked over to the desk, sat down, and took out a notebook from the safe, putting on his glasses to flip through it, "Jimmy, go on."
Jimmy: "My team encountered a minor mishap while investigating a murder case. They climbed over the dead neighbor's backyard without contacting the owner. Later, someone filed a complaint with OPR, who reacted swiftly, coming over the next day, which seemed odd to me.
Cross-checking with my team, the homeowner is under Williams's wife's name, but they don't live there; rather, it's his wife's brother staying there.
A normal person wouldn't be so alert. Seeing someone climb over the backyard on surveillance, they'd usually call the police first, but he instead filed a complaint directly to the FBI after confirming identities, which makes no sense.
I didn't alert him, arranged for a surveillance team there, likely to have some findings."
Kevin listened and nodded. As Jimmy finished, he also closed his notebook, replaced it in the safe, took off his glasses, and sat back, "Your inference is reasonable, but without enough evidence, it could be hard for you to take action."
Jimmy: "Yes, I came to check this Williams's stance with you. If certain things are verified, it might get him implicated, forewarning you to avoid being caught off guard."
Kevin considered: "Can you definitely take him down?"
Jimmy: "Not necessarily. Although they are relatively close, it's not his own brother. Forcing a connection might lack evidence; however, harboring is certain."
Kevin pondered, "How sure are you?"
Jimmy: "60%, I can say for sure that the person in that house has something going on. His anxiety over an FBI agent jumping into his backyard definitely points to something significant, but I'm not clear yet on what exactly."
Kevin nodded: "Understood, it's never wrong to prepare in advance. Let me know if there are any updates, I have a few acquaintances at the District Attorney."
Jimmy raised his glass to clink with Kevin's: "Then I'll head back now, good night."
