Chapter 402: What’s your type? [2]
That was a failure. Coco thought, her eyebrows furrowed in both confusion and concern.
Maybe I shouldn’t have asked Zaque first out of four of them? She added to her previous thought, her feet carrying her inside the house.
She knew that Zaque likes her, but she didn’t know that he likes her that much for him to look quite offended at her question after she explained why she was curious— she wanted to look someone perfect for him.
Yeah, she told him that she wanted to look for someone he could marry.
After that, Zaque forced a smile, stood up abruptly, and excused himself from her— his brisk pace going faster until he was sprinting inside the house.
She stayed seated in her spot and gazed around the backyard, letting the air whisk past her skin, just enjoying the silent and peaceful atmosphere of the backyard with the pastries Zaque brought to her.
When she ate everything, she picked up the tray and left the gazebo.
She made her way inside the house, feeling dejected, but strangely, seeing Zaque’s reaction made her quite relieved for some reason.
When she asked the question, she was only thinking of finishing the quest, but once the question really got processed by her brain.. She felt.. Upset and hurt, but again, she doesn’t know why.
She had been dwelling about this confusion of hers since last week and so far, she still doesn’t have an answer.
She let out a broken sigh, the sound escaping her lips as a whisper, and made her way inside the kitchen, her footsteps light and quiet.
"Oh, Coco." Heiren called, causing Coco to look up from the tray she was carrying and saw how he brightened up upon seeing her. "Just in time! Would you like to taste this new recipe I’m trying? It’s quite salty, but I think you would like it."
Coco’s eyes darted to the pot on the top of the magical stove, her feet carrying her to the sink.
"Sure, I would love to." She agreed, smiling softly as she placed the tray on the sink and turned to face Heiren fully. "What’s the recipe called?"
Heiren hummed and walked over to the counter where the cooking book was placed. "Hmm.. There’s no name for this dish actually, but it has soy sauce, salt, crushed black peppers, leaf of laurel, annnd.. Vinegar!"
"What’s the main ingredient?" Coco asked, her eyebrows shooting up to her hairline.
The ingredients he mentioned sounded awfully like a dish her mother would usually make whenever she was tired from work, but wanted to cook something for the four of them to eat— quick and easy, but so delicious and filled with love.
"Chucken!" Heiren answered, quite cheerfully.
Coco blinked and tilted her head. "Is that a monster or..? I haven’t encountered anything with that name.."
Though, chucken sounds like chicken. She thought, finishing what she wanted to say in her mind, not wanting to offend Heiren.
"It’s a monster." Heiren said, giving Coco new knowledge. "But as far as I know, they are rare."
"Then how did you manage to get your hands on one?" Coco raised an eyebrow, her hand reaching towards the lid of the pot and opened it, peering inside.
"I bought it." Heiren shrugged and just let Coco do whatever she wanted. "I haggled and they accepted."
"Ooohh.. Quite a skill you’ve got there." Coco hummed, indirectly complimenting Heiren for being able to get a discount on a rare monster.
"Thanks." Heiren smiled, grabbing a spoon from the cabinet. "Anyway, here, have a taste."
Coco did as she was told and took a couple of spoonfuls of taste, nodding her head in approval and immediately thinking of her mother’s usual dish.
"It tastes like chicken adobo." Coco commented, smiling softly as happy memories flooded her mind. "It reminds me a lot of home.. Easy to make, but warm, filling, and made with love.."
It was.. Strange.
She normally would feel sad and feel like crying whenever she thinks of her family, but now, it was as if they were just a happy and loving memory that she would always keep in her mind.
Has she accepted her fate and grieved?
Sighing softly, Coco dropped the spoon on the sink and turned to Heiren.
Back at the task and quest at hand.. She needed to know his type so she could finally look for someone who would suit him perfectly.
Throb.
Coco ignored the pain in her chest and proceeded to ask the question she asked Zaque.
"What’s your type of person that you would want as your future spouses?" Coco inquired, going straight to the point, smiling, but the shine didn’t quite reach her eyes.
Just like Zaque, Heiren became tense and froze.
"Excuse me?" Heiren couldn’t help, but blurt out, too startled at the random question Coco had thrown his way.
"I’m curious." Coco mused, tapping her finger on top of the counter. "You’re a good cook, patient, kind, and thoughtful.. What would you like in a person that would make them become your spouse?"
Heiren blinked owlishly, his eyebrows furrowing.
"What spurred you to.. Ask this question?" He wondered out loud, the corner of his lips curling downwards to let Coco know how upset he felt at the moment.
"Nothing." Coco answered a little too quickly and looked away from him. "I’m just curious.."
Should she tell the truth to Heiren and not lie like what she did to Zaque? Would he be just as upset as Zaque if he knew the truth about the quest she received from Lulu?
"Well, I believe that it’s best for you to take a nap." Heiren said, his fingers gently wrapping around her wrist.
The skin contact took Coco aback and caused her to flinch, not expecting him to change the topic frankly, and stumbled forward when he started dragging her towards the door.
"But I’m not sleepy!" Coco protested.
"No." Heiren insisted and simply shook his head. "I’m pretty sure you’re tired."
