Doubts and Distance
Doubts and Distance
The days that followed were filled with a strained silence. Hanna tried to maintain her distance, but the weight of her unspoken fears was taking its toll. Finn, though understanding, couldn’t help but feel the chasm growing between them. He tried everything to close the gap—small gestures of love, endless patience—but it seemed like Hanna was retreating further into herself.
One evening, when they were walking through the park, Finn stopped and turned to face her. The quiet had become unbearable, and he needed to know where they stood.
“Hanna,” Finn said softly, his voice edged with concern. “You’ve been pulling away from me for days now. I don’t know what’s going on, but I can’t do this without you. You have to let me in.”
Hanna’s heart ached as she looked at him. The weight of her secrets, her doubts, her fears, all seemed too heavy to bear. “I’m scared, Finn,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m scared of losing you. Scared that if I keep leaning on you, you’ll leave me.”
Finn’s eyes softened with understanding, but his heart broke at her words. He took her hands in his, gently squeezing them. “Hanna, I’m not going anywhere. You can lean on me, you can trust me, because I’m not going to leave you. But you have to trust yourself too. You’re not alone in this.”
Tears welled up in Hanna’s eyes as she searched his face. She could feel the sincerity in his words, but the fear, the lingering doubts, made it hard to believe them. Still, she took a deep breath, trying to push past the walls she had built around herself.
“I don’t know how to stop being scared,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “I don’t know how to stop worrying that the past is going to catch up with me.”
Finn gently cupped her face, his thumbs brushing away the tears that had started to fall. “You don’t have to stop being scared, Hanna. But you don’t have to face it alone either. I’m here. And we’ll face everything together. I’ll never get tired of you, I promise.”
In that moment, Hanna finally let herself believe him. She closed the space between them, wrapping her arms around him, and buried her face in his chest. The fear, though still present, felt more manageable now, because Finn was there, holding her through it.
“I’m sorry for pushing you away,” she whispered. “I don’t want to lose you.”
“You won’t,” Finn whispered back, holding her tighter. “You’ll never lose me.”
As they stood there in the quiet of the park, the distance between them finally started to fade. For the first time in days, Hanna felt a glimmer of peace. The road ahead was still uncertain, and the shadows of the past were never fully gone, but with Finn by her side, she knew she could face whatever came next. Together.
