A Rift Grows
A Rift Grows
The morning air was crisp, the chill biting against Hanna’s skin as she spotted Finn leaning against his car. He waved her over, his usual warm smile faltering as she approached.
“You okay?” he asked, his hand brushing gently against her cheek as he tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
“I’m fine,” Hanna replied quickly, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
Finn frowned, his brow furrowing as he studied her face. “Hanna… you don’t have to pretend with me. I can see it—you’re carrying something heavy.”
For a moment, Hanna froze. The weight of everything—the late-night texts, Elordi’s cryptic warnings, Ciara’s threats—pressed against her chest. Finn’s steady gaze made it harder to keep the walls she’d built intact.
“I’m handling it,” she said, her voice soft but firm.
Finn stepped closer, his hands settling on her shoulders. “You don’t have to handle it alone. You know that, right?”
Hanna hesitated, the words bubbling up inside her but refusing to escape. How could she explain the web of chaos she was tangled in without pulling him deeper into it?
“I’ll tell you everything soon,” she said finally, her voice trembling slightly. “I just… need to figure out some things first.”
Finn’s jaw tightened, and though he nodded, the unease in his expression lingered. “Hanna, whatever it is, I’m here. But you’ve got to let me in.”
“I will,” she promised, though the knot in her stomach told her it wasn’t that simple.
The bell rang, breaking the tension between them. Finn reluctantly let her go, his hand lingering on her arm for a moment before stepping back.
As Hanna walked toward the school, her mind raced. Finn’s concern was genuine, but she couldn’t shake the fear that if she told him everything—about Elordi, the messages, the threats—he’d look at her differently.
From across the parking lot, she caught sight of Ciara leaning against the side of the building, her arms crossed and her gaze locked on Hanna like a predator sizing up its prey.
Hanna’s steps faltered, her heart pounding in her chest. Ciara’s smirk widened as she pushed off the wall and disappeared into the crowd.
The rift between Hanna and Finn wasn’t just growing—it was being forced wider by every lie she told, every secret she kept. And with Ciara lurking in the shadows, Hanna couldn’t shake the feeling that the distance between them was exactly what Ciara wanted.
