Never Just Friends

Finn’s Return

Finn’s Return

The night before the assembly, as Hanna sat in the quiet of her living room, her mind raced with the events of the day. The folder in her bag felt like it weighed a ton, the truth pressing down on her as she thought about what was to come. The assembly would either break Ciara or send her into overdrive, and Hanna wasn’t sure which was worse.

But as the doorbell rang, the unease in her chest shifted into something entirely different. She hadn’t expected Finn to come by—not tonight, not after everything that had happened. Her heart skipped a beat as she opened the door.

“Finn?” she asked, her voice shaky.

He stood there, his hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets, his eyes tired but determined.

“Hanna,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion. “I need to talk to you.”

Without a word, she stepped aside, allowing him into the house. As soon as the door clicked shut behind him, the silence between them became deafening. Finn paced the room, his footsteps quick and uneven, as if the words he needed to say were trapped inside him.

“I’ve been an idiot,” he finally blurted, turning to face her. “I let Ciara get into my head, and I doubted you when I shouldn’t have.”

Hanna’s breath caught in her throat, her pulse quickening. She had expected this, hoped for it, but hearing him finally say it hit her harder than she thought it would.

“Finn…” she started, but her voice faltered, her throat tight with the weight of everything they’d been through.

He closed the distance between them in two strides. “I’m sorry, Hanna,” he said, his eyes searching hers, filled with guilt and regret. “I should’ve trusted you. I should’ve seen through her lies, but I got scared, and I let it all get to me.”

Hanna blinked back the sudden rush of tears, her chest tight as she stepped forward, meeting his gaze. “I never wanted you to doubt me. I was just trying to protect us.”

“I know,” Finn replied quietly, his voice raw. “And I should’ve been there, standing by your side instead of letting her twist things.”

He took her hands in his, holding them firmly. “I don’t care about the rumors or the pictures. I care about you, Hanna. I always have. And I’m not going to let her ruin what we have.”

Hanna’s breath hitched, and before she could say anything, Finn reached out, pulling her into his arms. The force of his embrace knocked the breath from her lungs, but the comfort in his hold was exactly what she needed. She clung to him, as if the world had suddenly shifted back into balance, his presence grounding her in the middle of all the chaos.

“I’m sorry,” Finn murmured against her hair, his voice thick with emotion.

“I love you, Finn,” Hanna whispered, her voice trembling as she felt the tears finally slip free.

“I love you too,” he said, his voice steady now, his grip on her tightening ever so slightly.

For the first time in what felt like weeks, Hanna allowed herself to fully relax, to lean into the safety of his arms. All the stress, all the worry that had plagued her heart, began to melt away in that moment.

“I’m scared,” she confessed quietly, her voice muffled against his chest. “Scared that we’ve come too far to go back. Scared of what comes next.”

Finn pulled back just enough to look at her, his eyes soft and full of understanding. “We’ll get through this. Together. You don’t have to do it alone anymore. I’m here.”

Hanna nodded, her tears slowing as she finally let go of the pent-up frustration and fear she had been holding on to. She had fought for so long, trying to navigate the lies and the betrayals. But in this moment, she wasn’t alone. She had Finn back. And maybe, just maybe, that was enough to face whatever was coming next.

“I’m not going to lose you,” she whispered, her hands reaching up to trace the lines of his face.

“You won’t,” Finn promised, brushing a lock of hair from her face. “I’m right here.”

They stood in silence for a few moments, the weight of everything that had happened between them hanging in the air. Hanna felt exhausted, but a quiet hope began to settle in her chest. The war with Ciara wasn’t over, but having Finn by her side again made her believe they could win this.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Hanna said, her voice calm but firm. “But I’ll face it with you.”

Finn nodded, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “We will. No matter what comes, we face it together.”

And as she leaned in to kiss him, her heart no longer felt heavy. It felt like, for the first time in a long while, they had finally found their way back to each other.
