A Love Tested
A Love Tested
The next day, the tension between Hanna and Finn was thick in the air. Every time she looked at him, she could see the anger flickering just beneath the surface. His usual easygoing demeanor had been replaced with something darker, something that Hanna had never seen before.
The moment she walked into the hallway, she saw it in his eyes—hurt, confusion, and, unmistakably, anger. The kind of anger that made it impossible to avoid the conversation they were both dreading.
“You didn’t tell me you were meeting him again,” Finn’s voice was tight, his words cutting through the silence like a knife. He stood by the lockers, his posture rigid as he waited for her response, the storm brewing in his gaze.
Hanna felt her stomach drop. She hadn’t expected this. She hadn’t expected Finn to find out so soon, but there was no escaping it now. She had made the decision to trust Elordi, and the consequences were now crashing down on her.
“I didn’t think I had to,” Hanna replied, her frustration bubbling to the surface. Her hands balled into fists at her sides as she tried to stay calm, trying not to let the guilt eat away at her. But it was hard to pretend she didn’t feel it, the weight of everything pressing down on her.
Finn’s eyes flashed, his anger rising. “Are you serious, Hanna?” His voice grew louder, his jaw tightening as he took a step closer to her. “You’re spending more time with him than you are with me!”
Hanna flinched at his words, but she couldn’t back down. “Because he’s helping me, Finn!” she shot back, the urgency in her voice clear. “He’s the only one who has what we need to stop Ciara!”
She could see the shock in Finn’s face, the way his eyes widened as if he hadn’t expected her to say it so plainly. “So what?” he asked, his voice growing softer, but the hurt was still there, lingering. “What happens when he turns on you? What happens when you realize you’ve been trusting the wrong person?”
Hanna’s chest tightened. Her heart ached as she saw the pain in his eyes, the fear that she was slipping further and further away from him. She hadn’t meant for it to be this way, but she couldn’t stop herself from trusting Elordi. Not when he was the only one who could give her the tools to finally end the war with Ciara.
Her breath hitched, and for a moment, she thought she might break down right there in front of him. She knew he was right to be worried—Elordi was dangerous, unpredictable, and she wasn’t sure what he wanted from her. But she couldn’t let that stop her from doing what had to be done.
“I’m doing this for us, Finn,” she said, her voice softening, but there was no mistaking the determination behind it. “For you, for me, for everyone Ciara’s hurt.” She reached out, placing a hand on his arm, trying to bridge the gap that had formed between them. “I’m not doing this because of him. I’m doing this because it’s the only way to make things right. To end this once and for all.”
Finn looked at her for a long moment, his eyes filled with pain and doubt. His shoulders were tense, his hands clenched into fists at his sides as he fought to keep his composure. But the hurt was there, and it was so much harder for her to see than any of the anger he’d shown.
He looked away, his gaze drifting to the floor as he took a deep breath. “Just… don’t lose yourself in the process.” His voice was quieter now, almost a whisper, but it hit Hanna like a punch to the gut. “Please. Don’t let him change who you are.”
Hanna’s heart ached, the words sinking deep into her chest. She knew what Finn was saying—he was scared of losing her, of her becoming someone she wasn’t. He didn’t understand why she had to trust Elordi, why she was putting herself in such a dangerous position. And honestly, Hanna wasn’t sure she understood it fully herself.
“I won’t,” she whispered, though a part of her wasn’t sure she could keep that promise. The truth was, she wasn’t sure how much longer she could balance the person she was becoming with the person she wanted to be. She wasn’t sure how much more of this she could take before the weight of it all made her break.
Finn’s eyes softened for a moment, but the pain in them was still there, lingering. He reached out, his hand gently cupping her face, as if trying to hold on to her, trying to pull her back from the edge. “I love you, Hanna. But I don’t know how much longer I can watch you get lost in all of this.”
Hanna swallowed hard, her chest tightening as she leaned into his touch. “I love you too,” she whispered, her voice cracking slightly. “But I have to do this. For us. For everyone we care about.”
There was a long silence between them, the weight of their words hanging in the air like an unspoken promise. But despite the tension, the fear, and the doubt that filled the space between them, Hanna couldn’t shake the feeling that their relationship was teetering on the edge. She wanted to believe that they could get through this—together—but a part of her wondered if the cracks were already too deep to repair.
