Never Just Friends

A Moment of Peace

A Moment of Peace

The gym’s music and chatter softened into the background as Finn led Hanna through the doors and out into the courtyard. The crisp night air hit her cheeks, but instead of feeling cold, she found it refreshing after the warmth of the crowded dance floor. Snowflakes floated down lazily from the sky, dusting the ground and sparkling like tiny diamonds in the soft glow of the overhead lights.

Hanna stopped in her tracks, tilting her head back to watch the snow. The world felt impossibly still, the muffled silence of winter wrapping around them like a blanket. Her breath fogged in the cold air, mingling with Finn’s as he stood beside her, his hand still resting lightly on her waist.

“This is perfect,” Hanna said, her voice soft. She turned to Finn, her eyes reflecting the glow of the lights. “I didn’t know I needed this until now.”

Finn smiled, his gaze lingering on her. “I think you’ve needed this for a while,” he said gently. “A night that’s just… yours. No stress, no whispers. Just you being you.”

Hanna’s chest tightened at his words. He always had a way of seeing through her, of understanding the things she couldn’t put into words. She glanced away, focusing on the delicate pattern of snowflakes catching in the folds of her dress.

“It’s not just the night,” she murmured. “It’s you. You make everything feel… lighter.”

Finn reached out, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. His touch was warm against her cool skin, and when she looked up, his expression was serious but full of warmth. “You’re perfect, Hanna,” he said, his voice low and steady. “And I’m so lucky to have you in my life.”

The sincerity in his tone made tears prick at Hanna’s eyes. She blinked quickly, but one managed to escape, slipping down her cheek. Finn’s thumb caught it before it could fall any further, his touch lingering for just a moment.

“I think I’m the lucky one,” she said, her voice trembling slightly but filled with conviction. “You’ve been there for me through everything, even when I didn’t know how to ask for help. I don’t know how I’d have gotten through it all without you.”

Finn’s hand cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing lightly across her skin. “You would’ve made it,” he said softly. “Because you’re strong, Hanna. Stronger than you give yourself credit for. But I’m glad I got to be there, to see how amazing you are.”

Hanna laughed softly, her breath visible in the cold air. “You always know what to say.”

Finn grinned, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “It’s a gift,” he said lightly, though the emotion in his gaze never wavered.

For a moment, neither of them spoke, the silence between them filled with unspoken understanding. The snow continued to fall around them, each flake catching the light and turning the courtyard into a scene straight out of a dream. Finn stepped closer, his hands settling gently on her waist.

“Dance with me,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Hanna blinked, startled. “Out here? There’s no music.”

Finn tilted his head, a playful smile tugging at his lips. “Who needs music?” he said, already swaying slightly. “We’ll make our own.”

Hanna laughed, shaking her head but letting him pull her closer. His movements were slow and easy, the rhythm of their steps dictated by the soft crunch of snow beneath their feet. She rested her hands on his shoulders, leaning into him as they turned in gentle circles.

The world around them faded until it felt like they were the only two people in existence. The cold air stung her cheeks, but the warmth of Finn’s arms made it easy to ignore. She let herself relax completely, her worries melting away with every step.

As they swayed under the falling snow, Finn leaned down, his forehead resting lightly against hers. “Hanna,” he murmured, his voice so soft she barely heard it. “You’ve brought so much light into my life. I just hope I can give you the same.”

Hanna’s breath hitched, her heart swelling in her chest. “You already have,” she whispered back. “More than you know.”

Finn smiled, his nose brushing hers. “Good. Because I’m not going anywhere.”

He kissed her then, slow and tender, his lips warm against hers despite the chill in the air. It wasn’t the kind of kiss filled with urgency or passion—it was steady, deliberate, a promise wrapped in the quiet magic of the moment.

When they pulled apart, Hanna couldn’t stop the smile that spread across her face. Finn’s eyes searched hers, his expression soft and full of something she wasn’t quite ready to name but felt deeply all the same.

“Let’s stay out here forever,” she said, her tone light but her words filled with longing.

“Deal,” Finn said with a grin. “As long as you don’t mind cold feet.”

Hanna laughed, leaning her head against his chest as they continued to sway in the snow. For the first time in what felt like forever, she felt completely at peace.
