Never Just Friends

The Formal Begins

The Formal Begins

The night of the winter formal arrived with a crisp chill in the air. Snow dusted the edges of Hanna’s driveway, shimmering under the glow of the streetlights. Inside, Hanna stood in front of the mirror in her bedroom, smoothing her hands over the fabric of her gown. The dress Emily had helped her choose—a deep navy with subtle silver accents—fit like a dream, hugging her frame in all the right places. Her hair was pinned back elegantly, soft waves framing her face, and the faint shimmer of her makeup caught the light just enough to make her feel radiant.

But even as she admired her reflection, a nervous flutter stirred in her chest. The idea of stepping into a room full of people, all eyes inevitably glancing her way, made her palms sweat. She closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath to steady herself.

You’re stronger than you think.

Finn’s words echoed in her mind, grounding her. A small smile tugged at her lips. She wasn’t doing this alone. Finn would be by her side, just as he had been through everything else.

The sound of a car pulling into the driveway snapped her out of her thoughts. Hanna peeked out the window to see Finn’s truck idling below, his figure stepping out into the frosty night air. Her heart raced as she grabbed her clutch and made her way downstairs.

When she opened the door, Finn was there, standing on the porch with a single white rose in his hand. He was dressed in a sharp black suit, the crisp lines perfectly tailored, and his tie was a deep blue that matched her dress. For a moment, neither of them spoke, their eyes meeting in a silent exchange that made Hanna’s cheeks flush.

“You look… incredible,” Finn said finally, his voice soft and almost breathless. His gaze swept over her, his usual playful grin replaced by something gentler, something awestruck.

Hanna smiled, her fingers brushing against the rose as she took it from him. “You don’t look so bad yourself,” she said, though her voice wavered slightly under the weight of his attention.

Finn stepped closer, offering her his arm with a warm smile. “Shall we?”

The drive to the school was filled with easy conversation and laughter, the kind of effortless connection that had come to define their relationship. Finn’s presence was steadying, his confidence infectious, and by the time they arrived, Hanna felt a little less like her nerves might overwhelm her.

The school gymnasium had been transformed into a glittering wonderland. Strings of fairy lights crisscrossed the ceiling, their soft glow casting the room in a golden hue. Silver and blue decorations adorned every surface, from the draped tables to the shimmering archway at the entrance. A large banner hung overhead, proclaiming the theme: A Night Under the Stars.

Music pulsed softly through the air, blending with the hum of excited chatter and laughter as students mingled in their formal attire. Hanna hesitated for a moment at the entrance, her nerves returning as she scanned the crowded room.

Finn’s hand found hers, his fingers intertwining with hers in a gesture that felt grounding, reassuring. “Hey,” he said softly, leaning closer so she could hear him over the music. “You’re going to be the most amazing person in this room. And I’m lucky to be here with you.”

Hanna looked up at him, her chest tightening at the sincerity in his voice. The warmth of his hand in hers steadied her, and she managed a small smile. “Thank you,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Together, they stepped into the gym, their presence drawing a few glances from classmates. Hanna couldn’t help but notice the subtle shifts in expressions—some curious, some surprised, but none unkind. For the first time, she didn’t feel like she had to shrink under the weight of their attention. With Finn by her side, she felt like she belonged.

As they made their way toward the refreshment table, Emily appeared, her emerald-green gown sparkling as she waved them over. “There you are!” she exclaimed, her grin wide. “You both look amazing. And, Hanna—seriously, that dress? Perfect.”

Hanna laughed, the tension in her chest easing further. “Thanks, Emily. You look pretty incredible yourself.”

“I know,” Emily said with a wink. “Now, go have fun. Dance, mingle, and make this night unforgettable.”

Finn chuckled, nudging Hanna gently. “She’s got a point. What do you say? First dance?”

Hanna hesitated, glancing toward the dance floor where couples were already moving to the rhythm of the music. Her nerves flared again, but Finn’s hand on her back was steady, his gaze filled with quiet encouragement.

“Okay,” she said softly. “Let’s dance.”

Finn grinned, leading her toward the floor. As they stepped into the swirl of lights and music, Hanna let herself relax, the warmth of Finn’s hand on her waist and the sound of his laugh chasing away the last remnants of her doubt. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she could let go—like she could just be.

And as the music swelled, their movements falling in sync, Hanna couldn’t help but think that maybe this was the beginning of something truly magical.
