The Perfect Setup
The Perfect Setup
Hanna’s plan to expose Ciara required nothing less than perfect timing and execution. Every detail had to align, every piece of evidence presented with precision, leaving no room for denial or manipulation. After much debate, she and her friends decided the school’s upcoming debate competition would be the ideal setting. It was one of the biggest events of the year, drawing a large audience of students, teachers, and even parents. The sheer size of the crowd would make it impossible for Ciara to spin her usual web of lies.
“It’s a gamble,” Jacob said, pacing the living room as they gathered the night before the event. His tone was skeptical, though his expression was thoughtful. “What if she turns it around? She’s good at talking her way out of things.”
“That’s exactly why we need to do this in public,” Emily said, her voice firm as she perched on the armrest of the couch. “The more witnesses we have, the harder it’ll be for her to twist the story afterward. She can’t manipulate a crowd if the facts are staring everyone in the face.”
Hanna sat on the couch, her fingers nervously tracing the edge of her notebook. Her stomach churned at the thought of standing up in front of so many people and confronting Ciara, but Emily was right. This had to be public. Anything less would give Ciara room to maneuver, and Hanna wasn’t willing to take that risk.
“We’ll present the evidence,” Hanna said, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach. “Everything Leo found. The screenshots, the metadata, the connection to Ciara’s email—it’s all there. Once people see it, they’ll know the truth.”
“And the debate competition?” Elordi asked from his seat by the window. He had joined the meeting reluctantly, his usual air of indifference masking what Hanna suspected was genuine concern. “What’s your angle? You’re just going to stand up in the middle of it and call her out?”
“Not exactly,” Finn interjected, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. “We’ll wait until the end of the event. When the audience is engaged but the tension’s low. That’s when it’ll hit the hardest.”
Jacob stopped pacing and crossed his arms, nodding slowly. “Makes sense. She’ll never see it coming.”
Finn reached over, placing a reassuring hand on Hanna’s shoulder. “You’ve got this,” he said, his voice warm and steady. “We’ve all got your back.”
Hanna glanced around the room, her gaze landing on each of them—Finn, whose calm presence always seemed to anchor her; Emily, with her sharp mind and unshakable determination; Jacob, whose quiet strength had carried her through more than he probably realized; and even Elordi, who had shown up despite his reservations. Their support was a lifeline, a reminder that she wasn’t facing this alone.
Still, the thought of standing up to Ciara in front of such a large crowd made her heart race. She clutched the flash drive containing all their evidence, the cool metal grounding her as she took a deep breath. “Let’s make this count,” she said, her voice resolute despite the fear gnawing at her edges.

The next morning, the school buzzed with excitement as students and teachers filed into the auditorium for the debate competition. The event was a highlight of the academic calendar, and the air was alive with chatter and laughter. But for Hanna, every step toward the auditorium felt heavier than the last.
She sat with her friends in the middle row, her hands clenched tightly in her lap as the lights dimmed slightly and the event began. Students took their places on stage, presenting arguments and rebuttals with confidence, but Hanna could barely focus. Her heart pounded in her chest, and the weight of the flash drive in her pocket felt almost unbearable.
“Breathe,” Finn whispered, leaning close to her. His voice was calm, his presence steady, and it helped—if only a little.
As the competition unfolded, Hanna’s gaze was drawn to Ciara. She sat near the front of the auditorium, surrounded by her usual entourage, her posture relaxed and her expression serene. If Ciara had any inkling of what was coming, she didn’t show it.
“She looks way too confident for someone about to be exposed,” Emily muttered from Hanna’s other side, her eyes narrowing as she watched Ciara laugh at something one of her friends whispered.
“She doesn’t know what’s coming,” Finn said, his tone sharp but quiet.
Hanna swallowed hard, her pulse quickening. “Let’s hope this works,” she murmured, more to herself than to anyone else.
The competition continued, the arguments on stage growing livelier as the event reached its final round. Hanna glanced at the clock, her nerves fraying as the moment drew closer. She could feel the tension in the air, the anticipation building as the audience grew more engaged.
Finally, as the last debate ended and the audience erupted into applause, Hanna felt Finn nudge her gently. “It’s time,” he whispered.
Hanna nodded, her hands trembling slightly as she reached for the flash drive. Her friends exchanged quick glances, their expressions a mix of determination and reassurance. Emily leaned closer, her voice low and firm. “You’ve got this. Just stick to the facts. The evidence speaks for itself.”
Hanna stood, her knees shaky but her resolve solid. This was it—the moment she had been dreading and preparing for in equal measure. As she stepped into the aisle and made her way toward the stage, the chatter in the auditorium began to quiet. Heads turned, and a ripple of curiosity spread through the crowd.
Ciara, seated near the front, turned to watch, her brows furrowing slightly as she noticed Hanna approaching the stage. For the first time, a flicker of uncertainty crossed her face.
Hanna took a deep breath as she reached the microphone. The room fell silent, all eyes on her. She glanced back at her friends, who nodded encouragingly, and then turned her gaze to Ciara.
“It’s time people heard the truth,” Hanna began, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. “Because for far too long, lies have been allowed to spread unchecked. And I’m not going to let that continue.”
The auditorium held its collective breath, the tension thick as Hanna prepared to reveal everything.
