A Line in the Sand
A Line in the Sand
The tension in Hanna’s living room was almost palpable as she, Finn, Emily, and Jacob gathered that evening. The coffee table was covered with notebooks, laptops, and printouts of the fake messages that had spread through the school like wildfire. The weight of Ciara’s latest attack hung over them, but instead of breaking their resolve, it seemed to sharpen it.
Emily paced the room, her hands gesturing as she spoke. “We need to find out who made these fake texts,” she said, her tone sharp and focused. “If we can trace them back to Ciara, it’s over for her. No one will be able to argue with hard evidence.”
Hanna sat on the couch beside Finn, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. “Emily’s right,” she said. “But we’re running out of time. The longer these messages are out there, the more damage they’ll do.”
Jacob, seated in the armchair, crossed his arms over his chest, his jaw tight. “I hate to admit it, but she’s good at this. Whoever faked those texts knew exactly what they were doing. It’s not going to be easy to prove they’re fake.”
Finn leaned forward, his expression thoughtful. “I might know someone who can help,” he said, drawing the group’s attention. “A friend of mine. He’s good with tech—really good. If anyone can figure out where those messages came from, it’s him.”
Jacob raised an eyebrow, his tone skeptical. “Do you trust him?”
“With my life,” Finn replied without hesitation. His voice was steady, leaving no room for doubt. “If I didn’t trust him, I wouldn’t bring him into this.”
Hanna glanced at Finn, the unwavering confidence in his voice giving her a glimmer of hope. “Then let’s do it,” she said, her voice firm. “If he can help us, we need to take the chance.”
Emily nodded, her pacing finally stopping. “Good. The sooner we can track this back to Ciara, the better.”
The following day, Finn arranged for Hanna and Emily to meet his friend Leo after school. They gathered in the back corner of the library, away from prying eyes and curious ears. Leo was already there when they arrived, sitting at a table with his laptop open. He was a quiet boy, his presence unassuming, but there was a quiet confidence about him that immediately put Hanna at ease.
“Leo, this is Hanna and Emily,” Finn said, introducing them as he pulled out a chair. “They’re the ones dealing with Ciara.”
Leo looked up, giving them a small nod. “Finn told me what’s going on,” he said. His voice was calm, and he had a way of speaking that made it clear he knew what he was doing. “Let me see what we’re working with.”
Finn slid his laptop across the table, the fake text screenshots pulled up and ready. Leo studied them for a moment, his brow furrowed in concentration. He tapped a few keys, scrolling through the images and opening a few programs on his laptop.
“This shouldn’t be too hard,” Leo said finally, leaning back slightly. “Most people don’t bother covering their tracks when they make stuff like this. They assume no one will dig deep enough to find them out.”
Hanna exhaled a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. “How long will it take?” she asked, her voice tight with urgency.
“A day or two, max,” Leo said, his tone casual. “I’ll run some checks tonight, see what metadata I can pull from the images. If there’s anything to trace, I’ll find it.”
Emily leaned forward, her expression sharp. “And if it does lead back to Ciara?”
Leo shrugged, his lips curling into a faint smirk. “Then you’ve got your proof. And from what Finn’s told me, it sounds like that’s exactly what you need.”
Hanna nodded, a mix of hope and apprehension tightening her chest. This felt like their best shot at stopping Ciara once and for all, but the stakes were high. If they failed, it wouldn’t just be Jacob’s reputation on the line—it would be hers as well. Ciara’s influence might be waning, but one wrong move could give her the upper hand again.
“Thank you,” Hanna said softly, meeting Leo’s gaze. “Really. I don’t know what we would’ve done without your help.”
Leo waved her off, already focused on his screen again. “Don’t thank me yet. Let me find something first.”

That night, Hanna sat in her room, staring at her phone as messages from Emily and Finn came through. They were optimistic, confident that Leo would uncover the truth, but Hanna couldn’t shake the knot of anxiety in her stomach. Ciara had been one step ahead for so long, and even with everything they’d done to expose her lies, Hanna couldn’t help but feel like they were walking a razor’s edge.
Her phone buzzed again, and she glanced at the screen.
Finn: Leo’s already on it. We’ll have something soon. Don’t stress too much, okay?
Hanna: Trying not to. Thanks for everything today.
Finn: You don’t have to thank me. I’ve got your back—always.
Hanna smiled faintly, the tension in her chest easing slightly. Finn’s unwavering support was a constant reminder that she wasn’t alone in this fight. And now, with Leo on their side, it felt like they might finally have a chance to turn the tide.
Still, as she lay in bed that night, staring at the ceiling, Hanna couldn’t shake the feeling that Ciara wasn’t done yet. The battle was far from over, but this time, Hanna wasn’t going to let her win.
