Jacob’s Defense
Jacob’s Defense
The next day, the hallways buzzed with an undercurrent of tension that was impossible to ignore. Whispers followed Hanna wherever she went, but it wasn’t until she crossed paths with Emily between classes that she learned the reason why.
Emily grabbed Hanna’s arm, pulling her aside into the alcove by the lockers. Her expression was a mix of excitement and anxiety, her voice barely above a whisper. “You are not going to believe what just happened.”
“What?” Hanna asked, her stomach tightening. “What’s going on?”
Emily glanced around to make sure no one was within earshot before leaning in closer. “Jacob confronted Ciara this morning. Right in the middle of the hallway. Like, full-on showdown.”
Hanna’s eyes widened, her heart skipping a beat. “What? Why? What did he say?”
Emily grinned nervously, clearly reliving the drama. “He told her to stay away from you. And I don’t mean he hinted at it or said it in some vague way. He said it, loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.”
Hanna felt her chest tighten, her pulse quickening. “What did she do?”
Emily’s expression shifted, her eyes narrowing as if the memory still unsettled her. “Not much,” she said slowly. “But the look on her face? She was furious. Like she wanted to explode but couldn’t. She just stood there, clenching her fists, and then stormed off.”
Hanna exhaled shakily, a mix of emotions swirling in her chest. Gratitude for Jacob’s loyalty, but also a creeping sense of apprehension. “I appreciate what he was trying to do,” she said softly. “But if Ciara was already on edge, this might push her over.”
Emily nodded, her own worry evident. “You think she’ll retaliate?”
Hanna bit her lip, glancing down the hallway as though Ciara might appear at any moment. “I just hope this doesn’t make things worse.”
