Never Just Friends

A Meeting in the Shadows

A Meeting in the Shadows

The library was eerily quiet after school, its usual bustle replaced by the faint hum of the air conditioning and the occasional rustle of pages turning. Hanna sat at a small table tucked away in the back corner, her fingers tracing the edge of her notebook as she tried to calm her racing thoughts. Emily sat across from her, her expression sharp and focused as she reviewed their notes for the third time.

“She’s late,” Hanna murmured, glancing toward the entrance for what felt like the hundredth time.

Emily didn’t look up. “She’ll come. She knows what’s at stake.”

Hanna bit her lip, her stomach churning with unease. Every minute that passed made her more certain that Ciara wouldn’t show. The thought of losing their fragile ally filled her with dread. Without Ciara, they had no way of knowing what their adversary was planning—and no way to stop it.

The sound of hurried footsteps broke through the stillness. Both girls looked up to see Ciara entering the library, her shoulders hunched and her eyes darting nervously around the room. She spotted them quickly and made her way over, her movements stiff and hurried, as though she were afraid of being watched.

When she reached their table, Ciara didn’t bother with pleasantries. She slid into the chair across from them, her gaze flicking toward the entrance before settling on Hanna and Emily. “I don’t have much time,” she said, her voice low and hurried. “What do you want?”

Hanna leaned forward, her tone calm but firm. “We need to know what she’s planning,” she said. “If she’s going after Jacob, we have to stop her.”

Ciara’s jaw tightened, her hands twisting together in her lap. For a moment, she didn’t respond, her eyes flitting between Hanna and Emily as though weighing her options. The fear in her expression was unmistakable, and Hanna couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for her. Ciara was caught in the same web as they were, and the stakes were just as high for her.

“She doesn’t tell me everything,” Ciara said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “But she’s definitely targeting him. She thinks if she can dig up something on him, it’ll distract people from her own mess.”

Hanna’s stomach churned at the thought. Jacob had been dragged into this because of her, and now he was in the crosshairs. She couldn’t let this happen—not to him, not because of her.

“Do you know what she’s looking for?” Hanna asked, trying to keep her voice steady despite the anxiety clawing at her chest.

Ciara hesitated, her gaze dropping to the table. “Not exactly,” she admitted. “But she keeps mentioning something about last year. Something about a fight or an argument Jacob had.”

Hanna’s mind raced, trying to recall anything from last year that might fit. Jacob wasn’t the type to get into trouble—he was quiet, kind, always trying to stay out of drama. What could their adversary possibly find on him?

Emily, who had been silent up until now, spoke up. “Does she have anything concrete, or is she fishing?”

“Fishing,” Ciara said quickly. “At least, that’s what it seems like. She’s hoping to find something she can twist into a scandal.”

Hanna exchanged a look with Emily, who nodded subtly. The situation was worse than they’d thought. If their adversary was willing to fabricate evidence to hurt Jacob, there was no limit to what she might do.

“Thank you for telling us,” Hanna said softly, her tone sincere. “This helps more than you know.”

Ciara bit her lip, her gaze still fixed on the table. Her hands clenched tightly in her lap, and for a moment, Hanna thought she might say something else. But when she looked up, her eyes were filled with fear. “Just… don’t tell her I talked to you,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “If she finds out, she’ll come after me.”

“She won’t,” Emily said firmly, her tone leaving no room for doubt. “We’ll make sure of it.”

Ciara nodded reluctantly, but the tension in her posture didn’t ease. She stood abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor, and glanced around the library one more time before hurrying toward the exit. Hanna watched her go, her chest tightening with a mix of gratitude and worry.

As the door closed behind Ciara, Emily leaned back in her chair, letting out a slow breath. “She’s scared,” she said quietly, her eyes following the path Ciara had taken. “But she’s more afraid of her than she is of us.”

Hanna nodded, her hands gripping the edge of the table. “I don’t blame her. She’s dangerous.”

Emily’s gaze shifted to Hanna, her expression serious. “So are we, if we do this right. We just need to be smarter than her.”

Hanna didn’t respond right away, her thoughts drifting to Jacob. The idea of him being dragged into this mess made her stomach twist. He didn’t deserve any of this—none of them did. But she couldn’t let her fear stop her. If Ciara was willing to risk herself to help them, then they owed it to her—and to Jacob—to see this through.

“We need to act fast,” Hanna said finally, her voice steady despite the unease swirling in her chest. “If she’s digging for dirt on Jacob, we need to stay ahead of her.”

Emily nodded. “Agreed. Let’s regroup tonight. We’ll go through everything Ciara told us and figure out our next move.”

Hanna stood, her resolve hardening. “We can’t let her win.”

As they left the library together, the weight of the situation settled over them like a storm cloud. The battle was far from over, but for the first time, Hanna felt a flicker of hope. They had an ally, however fragile, and they had a plan. Now, it was a matter of executing it before their adversary could strike again.
