Never Just Friends

Shifting Alliances

Shifting Alliances

The morning had been a whirlwind of tension. Whispers filled the hallways like static, and though Hanna tried to keep her head high, the intensity of the stares weighed on her. Ciara’s challenge had left her shaken, but Emily’s fierce determination to fight back gave Hanna a flicker of strength she didn’t know she had.

By the time lunch rolled around, Hanna was exhausted. She picked at the sandwich on her tray, her appetite gone. Emily sat across from her, scrolling through her phone, while Elordi and a few others exchanged low murmurs a few seats away.

“Anything new?” Hanna asked quietly, her voice barely cutting through the noise of the cafeteria.

Emily nodded, her lips curving into a smirk. “Actually, yes. A couple of people I sent the screenshot to have already started asking questions about Ciara. She’s on edge. I saw her snapping at one of her friends in the hallway earlier.”

Hanna blinked, the thought of Ciara losing her composure almost too good to believe. “Do you really think we can beat her?”

Emily leaned forward, lowering her voice. “If we’re smart about this, yes. But you need to be ready for her to strike back. She’s not going to go down without a fight.”

Hanna nodded, the knot in her stomach tightening. “I’m ready.”

But even as she said it, doubt crept in. She wanted to believe they could turn the tide, but Ciara had always been a step ahead, her ability to manipulate people unmatched.

“Hanna.”

The sound of her name pulled her from her thoughts. She turned to see Elordi standing beside her, his expression guarded but not unkind.

“Can we talk?” he asked.

Emily raised an eyebrow, glancing between them. “I’ll give you two a minute,” she said, grabbing her tray and shooting Hanna a reassuring look before walking off.

Hanna gestured for Elordi to sit, her chest tightening as he slid into the seat across from her. “What’s going on?” she asked cautiously.

Elordi hesitated, his gaze darting around the cafeteria as if to make sure no one was listening. “I heard about what Ciara’s been saying,” he said finally, his voice low. “And I think it’s time someone put her in her place.”

Hanna’s eyes widened. “Wait—you’re not defending her?”

He let out a bitter laugh. “Defend her? After what she’s done? No. But I’ve kept quiet because… well, you know how she gets when someone crosses her.”

Hanna nodded slowly, her heart racing. “So why are you telling me this now?”

“Because I’m tired of her acting like she owns this school,” Elordi admitted. “And honestly? I think she’s gone too far this time.”

Hanna leaned forward, her voice urgent. “Do you know something that can help us? Anything that proves what she’s been doing?”

Elordi hesitated, his expression conflicted. “Maybe. I overheard her talking to someone a couple of weeks ago—something about setting you up. I didn’t catch all the details, but it sounded bad.”

Hanna’s pulse quickened. “Do you know who she was talking to?”

“I’m not sure,” Elordi said, frowning. “But I’ll keep my ears open. If I hear anything else, I’ll let you know.”

“Thank you,” Hanna said, her voice filled with genuine gratitude.

Elordi gave her a small nod, standing up. “Be careful, Hanna. Ciara’s dangerous when she feels cornered.”

As he walked away, Hanna’s mind raced. If Elordi was willing to turn on Ciara, maybe they had a chance. But his warning lingered, a reminder that the fight was far from over.

That evening, Hanna sat in her room, staring at her phone. Her conversation with Elordi had left her on edge, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that Ciara was already planning her next move.

Her phone buzzed, and she picked it up, her heart skipping a beat when she saw Finn’s name.

Finn: How’s everything going?

Hanna hesitated before typing back.

Hanna: It’s… complicated. Can you come over?

When Finn arrived, the tension in Hanna’s chest eased slightly. He stepped into her room, his presence warm and steady, and closed the door behind him.

“You okay?” he asked, sitting on the edge of her bed.

Hanna shook her head, sinking onto the bed beside him. “No. Ciara’s not backing down, and I’m scared of what she’s going to do next.”

Finn frowned, his hand reaching for hers. “Did something happen?”

Hanna explained her conversation with Elordi, her voice trembling as she recounted his warning. Finn listened intently, his expression growing darker with each word.

“She’s not going to stop,” Hanna said softly. “Not until she’s destroyed me.”

“She won’t,” Finn said firmly, his grip on her hand tightening. “We won’t let her.”

Hanna looked at him, her eyes searching his. “How can you be so sure?”

“Because you’re not alone in this,” Finn said, his voice filled with quiet conviction. “You’ve got Emily, Elordi, Jacob… and me. We’re stronger together than she’ll ever be.”

His words sent a warmth through Hanna’s chest, and for the first time that day, she felt a flicker of hope. Finn leaned closer, his hand brushing against her cheek as his eyes softened.

“You’re stronger than you think, Hanna,” he murmured. “And no matter what happens, I’m not going anywhere.”

The sincerity in his voice made her heart ache in the best way. She leaned in, her lips meeting his in a kiss that was soft but filled with quiet intensity. Finn’s arms wrapped around her, pulling her close, and for a moment, the storm raging outside felt distant and unimportant.

When they finally pulled apart, Finn rested his forehead against hers, his voice barely above a whisper. “We’re going to get through this,” he said. “I promise.”

Hanna nodded, her heart steadying for the first time all day. “I believe you,” she said softly.
