Naruto: The Rise of Kurama

Chapter 89 89: Naruto

Chapter 89 89: Naruto

The contractions started at dawn.

Kushina had been expecting them for days- the baby's chakra had grown restless, pressing against her own with increasing insistence, and Kurama had warned her the accelerated development meant an accelerated birth. Still, the first real pain caught her off guard, sharp enough to make her grip the edge of the table where she'd been eating breakfast.

"It's time," she said to Aina, who was sitting across from her with Karin on her lap.

Aina didn't panic. She handed Karin to one of the nearby clanswomen, stood, and offered Kushina her arm. "I'll send for Honoka and the midwife. Can you walk?"

"I can walk." Kushina pushed herself up, one hand pressed against her stomach. The baby's chakra flared in response, warm and strange and eager. "He's been restless all night. I don't think he wants to wait much longer."

They made their way to the quarters that had been prepared for the birth- a small building near the edge of the settlement, far enough from the main gathering areas that any unusual chakra fluctuations wouldn't alarm the clan. Kurama was already there when they arrived, standing motionless in his human form with his tails held unnaturally still behind him.

"I felt the chakra shift," he said as Kushina entered. "It's starting."

"Yes." She lowered herself onto the prepared bedding, breathing through another contraction. The pain was manageable for now, but she could feel it building, the pressure in her body intensifying as the baby moved into position. "How long do you think it will take?"

"Hours. Maybe less." Kurama crouched beside her, his red eyes fixed on her stomach. "His chakra is strong. Stronger than I expected at this stage."

Honoka arrived a few minutes later with the clan's midwife, an older woman named Sachiko who had delivered half the children in the settlement. She took one look at Kushina, bowed her head respectfully, and began preparing her supplies. When she noticed Kurama crouched near the bedding, she went pale and kept her eyes carefully averted from him as she worked.

"Lady Kushina," she said, her voice steady despite the obvious tension in her shoulders, "how far apart are the contractions?"

"A few minutes. They're getting closer together."

"That's good. The baby is eager to arrive." Sachiko arranged towels and water within reach, her movements efficient despite her clear discomfort with Kurama's presence. "I'll need space to work when the time comes."

She wouldn't dare ask Kurama to move. But Kushina understood the unspoken request.

"Kurama, sit behind me," she said. "You can stay, but give Sachiko room."

He moved without argument, settling at her back where she could lean against him if needed. His tails spread across the floor around them, and Sachiko flinched when one brushed near her foot.

The next hours blurred together. Kushina had endured worse- she'd been bisected by Madara, fought through injuries that would have killed most shinobi- but this was different. This was her body doing what it was meant to do, tearing itself apart to bring something new into the world.

She didn't scream. She refused to show that weakness, even with only allies in the room. But she gripped Kurama's hand hard enough to draw blood from his palm, and he let her without complaint or comment.

Aina wiped sweat from Kushina's forehead periodically. Honoka hovered near the doorway, wanting to help but knowing better than to get in the way. Sachiko worked with quiet competence, checking Kushina's progress and offering instructions in a voice that never rose above respectful.

"It's time to push, Lady Kushina."

Kushina pushed. The pressure was immense, her body straining at its limits. She bore down again and again, following Sachiko's directions, feeling Kurama's solid presence at her back and his chakra wrapped around her like a second skin.

And then, suddenly, release.

A thin cry filled the room.

Sachiko caught the baby with practiced hands, clearing his airway, wiping the blood and fluid from his skin. Kushina collapsed back against Kurama's chest, gasping, her entire body trembling with exhaustion.

"Let me see him," she said. Her voice came out hoarse. "Give me my son."

Sachiko had gone rigid. She was staring down at the baby in her hands, her face drained of color, her mouth slightly open. The professional composure she'd maintained throughout the birth had shattered completely.

"Sachiko." Kushina's voice cut through the room like a blade. "Now."

The midwife's hands were shaking as she brought the baby to Kushina. She placed him in Kushina's arms with exaggerated care, then retreated several steps, her eyes wide with undisguised fear.

Kushina looked down at her son.

Red hair, fine as silk, covering his small head. Blue eyes that blinked up at her, unfocused but alert, with a faint ring of crimson around the pupils that flickered as she watched.

And on top of his head, nestled among the red strands: two small, soft fox ears, the same vivid color as his hair. They twitched at the sound of her breathing.

Behind him, curling against the blanket, a tiny tail the color of autumn leaves.

Kushina stared at him for a long moment. Then she looked up at Sachiko, who was pressed against the far wall like she wanted to disappear through it.

"You may go," Kushina said. "I'll call for you if I need anything else."

The midwife fled. Honoka and Aina remained, both staring at the baby with expressions caught between wonder and uncertainty.

"You two as well," Kushina said. "I'll call for you when I'm ready."

They left without argument, closing the door quietly behind them.

Kushina turned her attention back to her son. One of his ears rotated toward the sound of the door closing, then swiveled back toward her. His tail curled around her finger when she touched it, gripping with surprising strength.

"Naruto," she said quietly. "Uzumaki Naruto."

It was a name Kurama reccommended to her, but she felt it fit perfectly.

Kurama shifted behind her, leaning forward to look at the baby over her shoulder. His breathing had changed- slower, more deliberate, like he was forcing himself to stay controlled.

"He has my ears," he said. His voice was rough.

"And your tail."

"That shouldn't be possible. He's not a jinchūriki. He shouldn't have any physical manifestation of my chakra."

"And yet." Kushina traced the edge of one soft ear, watching it twitch under her touch. "He's not what either of us expected."

Kurama was silent for a long moment. Then he reached around her with one clawed hand, extending a single finger toward the baby's face. Naruto's eyes tracked the movement, and when Kurama's claw came close enough, one tiny hand reached up and grabbed it.

The grip was weak- newborn-weak- but Naruto held on with determination, his small fingers wrapped around Kurama's claw like he had no intention of letting go.

Kurama went completely still.

"He's not afraid of me," he said. There was disbelief in his voice- and beneath it, barely audible, a note of wonder he probably didn't realize he was showing.

"Why would he be? Your chakra has been wrapped around him since he was conceived. You're as familiar to him as I am."

Kurama didn't respond. He was staring at his son's hand wrapped around his claw, his ears twitching in the way that meant he was processing something he didn't know how to handle.

"The connection I told you about," he said finally. "The one like my bond with my siblings. It's there. I can feel it. He's part of me in a way that goes beyond the physical."

Kushina leaned back against him, exhaustion settling into her bones. The birth had taken everything she had, and now that the immediate crisis was past, her body was demanding rest.

"Is that a problem?" she asked.

"I don't know. Nothing like this has ever existed." Kurama's free hand came to rest on her shoulder, steadying her. "He's not human. But he's not a tailed beast either. He's something new."

Naruto yawned, his tiny mouth stretching wide, and his ears flattened against his head. His tail loosened its grip on Kushina's finger and curled against his own body. Within moments, his eyes had drifted closed.

"He needs to eat soon," Kushina said. "And I need to sleep."

"Then sleep. I'll watch over both of you."

She wanted to argue- there were things to discuss, plans to make, the impending battle with Madara to consider. But her eyes were already heavy, her thoughts growing sluggish. The warmth of Kurama at her back and Naruto in her arms was pulling her down into darkness.
