Chapter 344 - 274:
Li Peifeng and He Yimeng chatted for a while, as the people ahead of them finished their COVID tests and left. It was finally his turn. He pulled out his phone for the staff member to scan and register, then removed his mask and goggles.
Open your mouth, get ready for the poke!
"..."
The worker doing the COVID test was a ’big white’ covered in protective gear, but you could tell from her shape and visible eyes that she was a young lady. When she saw Li Peifeng’s face, she hesitated with the cotton swab in her hand, and her surprise was evident: "It’s you?"
"Uh?"
Li Peifeng closed his mouth, took a closer look, and suddenly chuckled, "What a coincidence! Aren’t you the nurse from Zhongren Hospital?"
The young lady responsible for the sampling was named Shen Han. Li Peifeng still remembered that when he had just received the system, he tried to avoid completing missions, starved for over two days, and hoped Zhongren Hospital could cure his ’glass stomach’, ’tofu teeth’, and ’elm tongue’ to no avail. But Shen Han offered him some bread and milk to barely satisfy his hunger.
This angelic sister was Peifeng’s very first sponsor from his freeloading system!
"Yes, open your mouth... Do you live in this community?"
Seeing no one queued behind Li Peifeng, Shen Han abandoned her rough technique. She gently swabbed twice, completed his test, and leisurely started chatting.
But after a couple of lines, the trucks loaded with supplies arrived at the community entrance. Using the unloading as an excuse, He Yimeng pulled on Li Peifeng’s sleeve and left.
"You truly are a peach among humans." He Yimeng’s tone was teasing, not angry.
"What do you mean?"
"You’ve got so many admirers, everyone who sees you smiles, wanting a piece."
Li Peifeng sighed, "That’s the burden of being handsome. I’m sure as a beauty, you can relate too."
"I’m different from you, not so many admirers, so I’m a plum blossom braving the winter cold."
"What’s that supposed to mean?"
He Yimeng said leisurely, "Never afraid of the howling winds."
Li Peifeng glanced at her, "Why don’t you speak more clearly?"
"Still don’t get it?"
"If you confess in public, maybe I’d say yes?"
He Yimeng’s laughter was crisp, "Sure, if you’re not afraid of your family hearing, I’ll borrow a speaker right now."
Li Peifeng immediately admitted defeat, "I was just joking!"
The duo had only worked together for two or three hours, but their words grew increasingly flirtatious, almost turning into teasing. They seemed oblivious to any impropriety, or perhaps subconsciously overlooked it.
...
...
At half past eleven at night, the COVID testing for all 20 buildings and over 3,000 residents was completed. Volunteer Li Peifeng’s day of work had finally ended.
He slacked off a bit during this time because at around half past nine, three girls and He Yimeng’s luggage arrived outside the community, and Li Peifeng had to spare some time to transport their luggage upstairs. Fortunately, there were elevators, making the process less strenuous despite the quantity.
At twenty minutes to midnight, all volunteers returned to the property office, where the community leader held a brief meeting. Most of what was said went in one ear and out the other for Peifeng, but he remembered one thing:
"Dismissed, volunteers remember to take supplies before leaving. We need to distribute them to other residents tomorrow morning, if not taken now, we’ll be too busy then."
"OKOK!"
"Come, come, come to me to get the supplies. Form a line, register name and building unit, I’ll log it."
Supply quantities were distributed based on the number of people in a volunteer’s household, so Li Peifeng received four supply boxes containing oil, rice, instant noodles, milk, ready-meals, masks, toilet paper, and other items.
"Shall we go? Go home."
"Let’s go."
After checking the supplies, He Yimeng closed her boxes, only to notice one was missing. Sure enough, Li Peifeng had taken it, carrying five boxes stacked almost higher than his head.
"Let me help with one and walk you to the elevator, or it’s quite heavy."
He Yimeng picked up a box and walked beside Li Peifeng, laughing again, "You’re quite strong, not lacking in energy?"
"Let’s stop the jokes; I’m tired of hearing them."
"But I’ve already ordered some goji berries for you. Don’t waste them, go to the collection point by the community gate when the lockdown lifts. Treat ailments, maintain health."
"Thanks! Do you want me to get you some Polygonum multiflorum?"
"For my gray hair? It’s dyed!"
They bantered as they reached building number one. Li Peifeng helped carry He Yimeng’s box into her first-floor rental apartment living room, said "See you tomorrow," and turned to leave.
"Not staying a while?"
He Yimeng calmly said, "Though I didn’t bring anything to drink, there’s milk in the box. Want me to heat some for you? Drink before you go?"
Their protective suits had long been removed and treated as medical waste. They were now in casual clothes.
Upon entering her already heated home, He Yimeng immediately took off her lamb fleece coat, revealing the form-fitting low-cut black undershirt underneath, leaning against the shoe cabinet, casually displaying her figure, smiling slightly with eyes cool and proud, with just a hint of flirtation.
[Stay, stay and I’ll get you, a trinity? I see it’s going to fall apart! Little rascal, you think you can escape my grasp?!]
So you really have such terrifying thoughts, you white-haired fiend?
