Chapter 339 - 272: A Winter Like Summer (Part 2)
The three of them chatted as they walked, and in no time, the line for nucleic acid testing formed a long queue. The plump delivery guy, Lu Ren, who had been silently following behind them, suddenly emerged from the property management office and walked toward them, carrying two plastic bags filled with bread, milk, sausages, bottled water, instant noodles, and other snacks.
"These are for the two of us."
Lu Ren nudged Li Peifeng and said loudly, "It’s a benefit for volunteers. Give my share to your friends; they didn’t have dinner. I can get mine tomorrow."
With that, he handed one bag to Li Peifeng and the other to Yao Xun.
He’s a kind-hearted fellow, but do you realize you’re stealing my spotlight here...?
Yao Xun was quite surprised. "Thanks, big brother."
Li Peifeng was also slightly taken aback but then handed his bag of supplies to He Yimeng. "You all keep it and eat it. I still have some food at home."
He Yimeng didn’t take the bag. She lifted her eyes from her phone, glanced towards the property management office, and pondered, "There’s more benefits? How do you volunteer?"
"You want to sign up too?" Yao Xun reminded her, "It’s not only dangerous but also exhausting."
He Yimeng sighed, "Your family doesn’t have food stored; mine is even emptier. He has three extra mouths to feed at home; we can’t rely on that. If I don’t volunteer, what will we eat? The community might distribute some rice, noodles, and eggs at best. Are we supposed to survive half a month on that? I’m afraid you might get depressed!"
A little while later, Li Peifeng took He Yimeng to find Sister Zheng, and the white-haired student also became a proud volunteer.
Initially, Yao Xun seemed reluctant, but He Yimeng cleverly laid out all the advantages. She not only persuaded Yao Xun but almost convinced her to volunteer too, although He Yimeng eventually talked her out of it.
"Yimeng, you can be in charge of registration at the nucleic acid test site. Someone will teach you the specific procedures in a bit..."
Sister Zheng said this, but Li Peifeng interrupted, "Sister Zheng, can Yimeng and I be in the same patrol group?"
"It’s because there may be some women and elderly who can’t resist taking a walk downstairs, and my words may not be very effective in persuading them to return. Yimeng is a young girl; she’s more approachable, and the results are better. What do you think?"
Sister Zheng looked carefully at Li Peifeng and then at He Yimeng, who was standing close beside him, seemingly understanding something. She chuckled knowingly, "Oh, so you two are... Alright, you can be a team for now. You complement each other well as a duo, making the work less tiring. I’ll call Lu Ren and assign him other tasks."
Sister Zheng seemed to misunderstand something, but neither of them explained.
"Okay, thank you."
And so, Li Peifeng changed partners, left the office, informed Lu Ren, and after greeting Yao Xun, the two went on patrol...
"No need for a nucleic acid test?"
"Change your clothes and work with me first. We can wait until most people in Building 1 have been tested. Otherwise, we’ll just be in line here."
"Then let’s change in the corridor of the building."
The two entered the corridor of Building 1. Li Peifeng stood at the door acting as a doorman while He Yimeng changed into her protective suit inside, teasing, "Seriously, why did you change partners for no reason? Are you jealous because someone brought us food?"
"You’re overthinking it."
"I think the registration job indoors sounds quite nice. It’s winter after all, and patrolling with you late at night is tiring, cold, and boring."
Li Peifeng rolled his eyes, irritated, "Weren’t you the one who deliberately tugged at my shirt hem earlier? If you don’t want to be with me and think the registration work is easier, we can go back and tell Sister Zheng. You can still head back inside."
"I was just joking; no need to get angry..."
He Yimeng finished dressing, put on her mask and goggles, fully geared up, then patted him on the back. "Let’s go, little whirlwind; let’s patrol."
But just as they stepped out, He Yimeng’s phone rang. The caller was Wu Wenyue.
It seemed Boss Wu finally remembered her actors, who were probably also stuck in this community, and called to show some concern.
"Do you have anything? What’s the most lacking right now? You can have supplies delivered to the community gate; Li Peifeng is volunteering, and I can have him fetch it for you."
"No need." He Yimeng glanced at Li Peifeng and smiled. "I’ve signed up as a volunteer too, and I have a classmate living here as well. Life won’t be a problem."
"Oh? That’s pretty good!"
Wu Wenyue felt relieved and talked about some work issues, roughly advising not to delay video shoots even if the community is locked down. She suggested having remote meetings with the behind-the-scenes staff to discuss scripts and sketches and finalize the content for self-filming, and so on.
He Yimeng agreed and said she would connect with the team at night to finalize the content for the first video and quickly get her video account on track. With that, she hung up the phone.
"Why didn’t you say you were teamed up with me?"
Li Peifeng looked up at his home in Building 2 with a sense of relief. If Wu Wenyue knew about this, it might cause trouble.
"That would be selling you out!"
He Yimeng said frankly, "Besides, telling Sister Yue might make her overthink. I just started this job, and I don’t want any trouble. I’ll team up with you for now. Later, I’ll ask my roommate to deliver my luggage, and it will be convenient to pick it up under the guise of patrolling. Once I get my luggage, I’ll listen to the community’s arrangements tomorrow. I’ll do whatever work they assign and separate from you. Don’t miss me too much by then."
