Chapter 482 - 479 Shocked and Heartbroken
Chapter 482 - 479 Shocked and Heartbroken
"Because City Lord Bai offended the King of Eastern Spirit City..." Gao Fei recounted the events just as they had happened, without exaggeration or omission, simply stating the facts.
"Nonsense." After listening, the Emperor became furious, his angry voice thundering through the skies, "The King of Eastern Spirit City has quite the gall! To dare behead a city lord I personally ennobled! What I find most abhorrent is that he actually bent the laws for personal gain, avenging his son by wrongfully killing a city lord. He really went too far."
"Your Majesty, only you can save City Lord Bai now."
"Rest assured, I will definitely save him."
"We should leave right now, City Lord Bai could be beheaded at any moment."
"Let's go!"
The Emperor swept up Gao Fei and flew towards Eastern Spirit City at a speed that rivaled meteors. From a distance, one could only see a streak of light, with no trace of their figures.
Gao Fei inwardly admired him, truly worthy of being the Emperor, his strength is profound! He estimated that not even an airplane could match the Emperor's flying speed.
Flying high in the sky was a pleasure; one could reach out and touch the white clouds, look down upon the earth, and everything would appear minuscule—put simply, in the high skies, one sees a different landscape.
"What's your name?" The Emperor, while flying at high speed, suddenly asked.
"My name is Gao Fei," Gao Fei answered truthfully.
"You've used a Disguise Technique, haven't you?" the Emperor said, startling Gao Fei with his observation.
"How... how did you notice..." Gao Fei asked in surprise.
"Your Disguise Technique is very clever, but it cannot fool my eyes," the Emperor said calmly. "Some things are too profound to be understood if explained." After a pause, he added, "Change back to your original appearance."
Muttering the incantation, Gao Fei cast a spell, and his face began to change. In a short time, Gao Fei's true face was revealed.
The Emperor glanced at Gao Fei, "Hmm, quite a good-looking fellow."
"Your Majesty flatters me..."
"What is your relationship with Bai Daqing?"
"A superior-subordinate relationship; he is my superior."
"Just a simple superior-subordinate relationship?" the Emperor seemed unconvinced.
"Yes," Gao Fei nodded.
"Then I don't understand," the Emperor said solemnly. "If it's just a simple superior-subordinate relationship, why would you go to such great lengths to rescue Bai Daqing without any concern for your own safety?"
"City Lord Bai has shown me kindness; I cannot stand by and do nothing when he is in danger."
"To repay a kindness?" The Emperor was taken aback. "I didn't see that coming. You do have a sense of loyalty."
"One must live true to one's conscience."
"Rightly said! Well said! Conscience is the foundation of being human. Whatever happens, we must not abandon our conscience! Bai Daqing is fortunate to have a subordinate like you."
After their conversation, the Emperor formed a slight fondness for Gao Fei.
As they conversed, the two of them flew swiftly, crossing one city after another, drawing ever closer to Eastern Spirit City.
...
Eastern Spirit City.
Inside the prison.
King Sikong Yi of Eastern Spirit City stood outside the cell, glaring at Bai Daqing who sat cross-legged on the bed, and said with an icy tone, "You've got some nerve! How dare you deceive me!" Over a month ago, Bai Daqing had told King Sikong Yi that he had hidden a Spiritual Treasure and was willing to give it to Sikong Yi, hoping that Sikong Yi would spare his life. Sikong Yi believed him and had reliable people search for the Spiritual Treasure. After a month of searching, the message came back: no Spiritual Treasure was found! It was then that Sikong Yi realized he had been duped, and, furious, he came to the cell to confront Bai Daqing.
Bai Daqing, with a calm expression, showed not the slightest sign of nervousness: "Indeed, I deceived you. My sole purpose was to buy time and live a few days longer."
"Brave of you!" Sikong Yi sneered: "You are the first person who has dared to deceive me! You really do have guts!"
"It is not that I am brave," Bai Daqing shook his head, "but that you are too foolish! Utterly and completely foolish! I concocted a lie off the cuff and you believed it. It took you more than a month to realize it was false news. You really are too foolish! I can't figure it out, truly I can't, how someone with your intelligence could become a prince. You are utterly unworthy of the title!"
"Guards! Drag this treacherous Bai Daqing out and chop off his head! Hang it at the city gate for all to see! At the same time, proclaim to the world that Bai Daqing is a traitor. Add a few more charges to his name. I want to destroy his reputation completely, so that even in death, the people will scorn his spine!" roared Sikong Yi.
"Whoosh..."
A group of prison guards rushed in, opened the cell door, and dragged Bai Daqing out. Bai Daqing's cultivation had been sealed; he was now no different from an ordinary person and could not resist at all.
"Sikong Yi! You will face retribution! You will not meet a good end!" Bai Daqing bellowed angrily: "You will not die a good death!!!"
"How dare you spout such nonsense on the brink of death!" Sikong Yi laughed coldly: "People like you should have been killed long ago."
...
The vegetable market's execution ground.
On a stone platform several meters high.
Bai Daqing, bound tightly, knelt on the platform. Two burly men held him down firmly, preventing Bai Daqing from rising. Beside them stood an executioner, with a chilling great dao slung over his shoulder, just waiting for the Execution Supervisor's command to chop off Bai Daqing's head with the dao in his hands.
The area around the stone platform was crowded with common folk, pointing and discussing Bai Daqing, with all manner of comments.
The Execution Supervisor first listed dozens of Bai Daqing's crimes, painting him as an utterly incorrigible villain. Bai Daqing had cotton stuffed in his mouth and could not speak; he could only glower with wide-open eyes at the Execution Supervisor, who was so unnerved by the gaze that he hurried through the list of crimes. Then the Execution Supervisor loudly announced, "The time has come, proceed with the execution!"
"Swish!"
The executioner raised the great dao and mustered all his strength toward Bai Daqing's neck.
In his despair, Bai Daqing closed his eyes, thinking silently: My daughter, I must bid you farewell forever! In his final moment, Bai Daqing's thoughts were all of his daughter, a father's love as monumental as a mountain, so moving it touched the heavens.
"Swoosh!"
A streak of light shot from afar, striking unerringly at the executioner's great dao. There was a "snap", and the dao broke into two pieces. The executioner stumbled back several steps, "Thump thump thump...", and then fell to the ground, taking a good while to catch his breath.
Shock appeared in the executioner's eyes. What was that streak of light? How could it be so formidable to not only destroy the great dao but also nearly cause him serious injury? It should be known that the great dao was no ordinary object; it was a high-level spiritual Treasure. Over the years, it had beheaded at least a thousand heads, drenched in their qi, which made the dao even more formidable. To have it destroyed by an unknown streak of light was simply inconceivable.
Both shocked and distressed, the executioner had been with his great dao for decades and had become emotionally attached to it.
