Chapter 392 - 389: No Right for You to Speak
Chapter 392 - 389: No Right for You to Speak
"Cao Buwei is lying," Gao Fei exclaimed loudly. "Hundreds of soldiers have died, so why has he come back unscathed? It doesn't make sense!"
"Gao Fei, stop spouting nonsense!" Cao Buwei roared with a flushed face.
"I suspect that Cao Buwei was captured by the enemy and, for some reason, they let him go," Gao Fei said.
"You're talking out of your ass!" Cao Buwei, frantic, pointed at Gao Fei's nose and cursed, "You're slandering me! You bastard!"
Gao Fei's mouth curled into a sneer, letting out a cold laugh, "Getting so angry, are you feeling guilty?"
"My lord, you must seek justice for me," Cao Buwei turned, looking at Miao Kuangfeng with righteous indignation and shouted, "Gao Fei is framing me, you must ensure justice for me!"
"My lord," Gao Fei stepped forward and said loudly, "Better safe than sorry. If Cao Buwei was released by the enemy, it means he has reached some sort of agreement with them. Keeping Cao Buwei in the camp is a hidden danger, a grave one." Having finally grasped a handle on Cao Buwei, Gao Fei definitely wouldn't let go, even exaggerating a minor issue.
Miao Kuangfeng pondered silently.
"My lord, I've been wronged," Cao Buwei cried out, "There were only two enemies, both very powerful. I thought I was surely dead, but those soldiers held them off with their lives, giving me the chance to escape..."
Miao Kuangfeng raised an eyebrow, "There were two enemies?"
"Yes," Cao Buwei nodded hastily, "We were attacked by two enemies... both very strong..."
"Gentlemen, what are your thoughts?" Miao Kuangfeng asked the other generals for their opinions.
"I've known Cao Buwei for decades, and I understand him. In my heart, Cao Buwei is a man of principle, with bottom lines. I don't believe he would defect," one general started.
A flicker of gratitude passed through Cao Buwei's eyes.
"I also don't believe Cao Buwei would defect."
"Neither do I."
"I don't believe it."
...
Several generals spoke up, all surprisingly in support of Cao Buwei.
Gao Fei's expression turned ugly, "You are being sentimental! Just because you have ties with Cao Buwei, you are showing bias! That is not right, you should think about the problem calmly, rationally, and not..."
"Shut up!" a general scolded, "You're just a lowly centurion; you don't have a say here!"
"Gao Fei, I know you have a grudge against Cao Buwei, but you can't just fabricate things and frame him," another general said.
"I didn't..." Gao Fei began to defend himself, but was interrupted.
"Enough, stop acting already. We're not fools here."
"Cao Buwei is alive because he is lucky. Don't take this opportunity to stir up trouble."
"Gao Fei, I used to think highly of you, believing you to be capable and responsible. Only now do I realize how wrong I was. You're too devious."
"Cao Buwei has been our colleague for decades. We are well aware of the kind of person he is. Anyone could defect, but definitely not Cao Buwei."
...
A group of generals took turns dressing down Gao Fei from head to toe, without any semblance of sympathy.
Gao Fei's fists slowly clenched, his face dark as the bottom of a pot. Facing such accusations, he was on the verge of erupting.
Hold back!
He must hold back!
Gao Fei took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing the raging fury in his chest, "Regardless of what you think of me, I stand by my opinion. Cao Buwei is highly suspect, and it's best to detain him... If it turns out Cao Buwei is innocent, I will apologize to him.
But if it's proven that Cao Buwei indeed defected..." Gao Fei left the rest unsaid, but everyone understood that if Cao Buwei really had defected, his fate would be incredibly bleak.
"You're just settling personal scores!"
"You're just exploiting the situation!"
"Your intentions aren't pure!"
"Without concrete evidence, you can't arrest Cao Buwei!"
"You think you can arrest someone just by saying so? Who do you think you are?"
"Why do I find you so disagreeable?"
"Even if someone is to be arrested, it should be you!"
...
Just as the situation was about to spiral out of control, the silent Miao Kuangfeng spoke up.
"Shut up, all of you," Miao Kuangfeng commanded sharply.
The authority of Miao Kuangfeng was not to be taken lightly; at his word, everyone closed their mouths.
"Gao Fei, you insist that Cao Buwei is suspected of treachery, so I ask you, do you have any evidence?" Miao Kuangfeng asked in a stern voice.
"No," Gao Fei shook his head, "I have no evidence."
"Then don't talk nonsense without evidence."
"My lord..."
"Cao Buwei has been loyal to me for many years; I don't believe he would betray us."
"But my lord..." Gao Fei became anxious.
"Everyone, stand down," Miao Kuangfeng waved his hand wearily, "I'm tired and need to rest."
"Yes," a group of officers began to leave one after the other. Cao Buwei gave Gao Fei a resentful look before lifting his foot and walking out of the tent.
Gao Fei stood still, his face dark with anger, unmoving.
"Why are you still here?" Miao Kuangfeng furrowed his brows.
"Cao Buwei is under serious suspicion! We can't just let him off like this!" Gao Fei knew saying this would displease Miao Kuangfeng, but he said it anyway. He was a straightforward person and felt uncomfortable holding back his words.
"Gao Fei," Miao Kuangfeng shook his head, "what should I say about you... I know you have issues with Cao Buwei..."
"You've misunderstood, my lord!" Gao Fei hurriedly said, "I'm only speaking about the issue at hand, with no intent of personal vendetta."
"Enough, don't say any more," Miao Kuangfeng gestured dismissively, "Even if Cao Buwei has betrayed us, it doesn't matter."
"Ah?" Gao Fei was stunned.
"At most, Cao Buwei is just a Chiliarch; his troops are nearly all dead or injured, and he is now a commander without an army. Even if he turns to the enemy, he can't cause much trouble," Miao Kuangfeng explained. "Gao Fei, I consider you a confidant, which is why I am being candid with you."
"So, my lord had already weighed the situation," Gao Fei said with a bitter smile.
"If you still feel uneasy, then keep an eye on Cao Buwei," Miao Kuangfeng suggested, "If he indeed engages in treacherous acts, come and tell me."
Now that Miao Kuangfeng had made his stance clear, what more could Gao Fei say? He could only nod in agreement, "I understand."
"If there's nothing else, you should go back," Miao Kuangfeng said, looking even more fatigued after a few more words.
"Rest well, my lord. I will take my leave," Gao Fei turned and departed.
In fact, Miao Kuangfeng harbored suspicions about Cao Buwei as well, but he had not showed them. Unlike Gao Fei who could voice his concerns openly, Miao Kuangfeng, as a Wan Fuchang, had to be cautious with every word and deed, for one slip could potentially cause major upheaval.
Without solid evidence, if Miao Kuangfeng arrested Cao Buwei, not only would Cao Buwei resist, but other officers might also object. In the eyes of others, Miao Kuangfeng, with tens of thousands of troops under his command, appeared immensely imposing. In truth, however, Miao Kuangfeng had his difficulties; it was not as carefree as outsiders perceived.
