Chapter 819: Honored Guests Arrive

Chapter 819: Honored Guests Arrive

The Zhang Residence was in chaos, with the butler directing the servants to lay out a brand-new red carpet, stretching from the mansion’s entrance to the hall. Afterward, he huddled all the servants together in a remote location.Zhang Wushan, in order to present a refreshed Zhang Residence for the upcoming visit from President Chu, had no choice but to keep the servants temporarily out of sight. He feared the clumsy servants might gossip or utter disrespectful remarks, thus carefully arranging everything to be preventive.

This shows just how much Zhang Wushan values President Chu’s arrival.

"Who could it be that warrants such attention from the master?"

"Never have we seen such a bustle at the Zhang Residence."

"I heard that country woman will personally receive the esteemed guest?"

"That country woman hasn’t seen any grand occasion. The master’s arranging her to greet the guest, isn’t that exposing our family scandal? We could do a better job serving instead."

"Exactly, just a run-down village woman who caught the master’s eye with some looks; otherwise, how could she possibly enter the Zhang Residence?"

The Zhang Residence is quite large, employing more than twenty servants for tasks like serving tea and pouring water.

Gathered together, they took the chance to gossip.

The country woman, the run-down village woman they spoke of, refers to Zhang Wushan’s wife, Ma Huifang, their master’s wife. Normally, it’s audacious for mere servants to speak so brazenly about the mistress, but seeing Ma Huifang’s meekness, the servants became reckless. Jealousy towards Ma Huifang further fueled their harsh words.

Ma Huifang’s background is indeed humble; she comes from the countryside, and Zhang Wushan used underhanded means to win her over.

In the decade or so she lived in the Zhang Residence, Ma Huifang never minded others’ opinions, pretending not to hear servants’ criticisms, which emboldened them. In fact, Ma Huifang had her reasoning; although the servants spoke insultingly, they were stating true facts — she was a country woman, and that’s indisputable. She disliked abusing power, hence the rising contempt in their words.

"Mistress is very kind, never troubling you, and the master is indifferent, while the mistress doesn’t stoop to your level. You are too dismissive," a servant sided with Ma Huifang.

"Xiao Hui, didn’t Ma Huifang once lend you money for your relative’s medical treatment? That’s why you’re buttering up to her, licking her boots to curry favor?" a plump woman scolded.

The servant named Xiao Hui was the one defending Ma Huifang. She stubbornly said, "You gossip senselessly every day, Mistress is so kind, she just doesn’t bother with you. Yet, you push your luck, getting more outrageous. Be wary of heavenly retribution."

Xiao Hui’s defense angered the group, leading to vicious taunts until Xiao Hui retreated to cry.

"Did you hear? That wench seduced the eldest young master, leading to his expulsion from the Zhang Residence."

"How could it be seduction? We all know the eldest young master’s temperament: beating and scolding us servants. With the eldest young master gone, we’re quite liberated, no longer catering to his whims. In that sense, the village woman did us a favor."

"Exactly, indeed. The eldest young master had bad intentions; I’ve caught him ogling the village woman several times."

"I’m glad the eldest young master met this fate."

"Don’t know if the eldest young master’s misconduct towards the village woman is true or false?"

"Must be true, I’ve seen him fondle the village woman."

The servants resumed gossiping.

Outside the Zhang Residence, Zhang Wushan and the butler eagerly awaited President Chu’s arrival.

Half an hour passed, and President Chu had yet to arrive, making Zhang Wushan anxious. Du Xueqi had said President Chu would arrive within half an hour, and it’s only natural to be worried. However, Zhang Wushan remained patient, scanning his surroundings.

"Master, given President Chu’s status, time is valuable; he wouldn’t be late. Could someone be playing a prank, impersonating President Chu’s secretary?" the butler worriedly expressed.

"Impossible, let’s patiently wait. President Chu is busy, likely delayed by business. We just need to wait quietly," Zhang Wushan affirmed.

"Should we call Secretary Du to confirm President Chu’s schedule?" the butler suggested.

"That would be too abrupt; perhaps President Chu is intentionally testing us. If I lack such patience, how could Chu Group entrust me with great responsibilities?" Zhang Wushan insisted, envisioning a promising future, he remained patient.

"Alright, let’s hope the master’s intuition is correct," the butler respectfully replied, saying no more.

Another half hour passed. As Zhang Wushan neared losing patience, a luxury car appeared in sight, and Zhang Wushan and the butler gleefully cheered.

"They’re here—it’s surely President Chu’s grand arrival!" Zhang Wushan exclaimed with excitement.

"Master foresaw accurately; indeed, President Chu is testing your patience," the butler praised.

The luxury car stopped, and Ye Fan, Mengyao, and Qiu Wen alighted.

Zhang Wushan hurried over, bowed, and greeted, "Zhang Family’s business chairman, Zhang Wushan, humbly welcomes the esteemed presence of President Chu."

The butler followed suit, paying respects alongside Zhang Wushan.

Zhang Wushan only recognized President Chu from the media, unfamiliar with Ye Fan and Qiu Wen, thus refraining from random questioning, displaying respectful expressions.

"No need for formalities, President Zhang," Mengyao spoke tepidly.

"In President Chu’s presence, I dare not presume the title ’President Zhang,’" Zhang Wushan responded, honored.

"President Zhang, don’t belittle yourself," Mengyao diplomatically commented, then explained, "Arriving half an hour past the scheduled time, apologies for keeping President Zhang waiting."

Zhang Wushan, selfassuredly believing President Chu’s late arrival was a deliberate test of his patience, heard her words, reinforcing his presumption.

He hastened to say, "President Chu’s low-key travel likely encountered traffic. If the local police knew you were traveling, they’d certainly escort you."

He had already prepared excuses for President Chu’s tardiness, along with praise.

Zhang Wushan’s flattery wasn’t insincere. With the top ten magnates converging, local police wouldn’t just escort them, but cater to their wishes in other matters, devotedly serving them.
