Chapter 530
Chapter 530
Once inside the car, Cedrick turned to Jessica. "You didn't tell your mom about this, did you?"
"Nope. Don't feel like it." Jessica's face was tense. She stared out the window, avoiding his deep gaze.
Cedrick knew she was being stubborn. He gently patted her hair. "Then don't. No need to worry her."
"Cedrick, I'm sorry. Didn't mean to snap," Jessica realized she was being moody and apologized softly.
"Shh, I get it. Let's drop it. Where you headed now? I'll drive you." Cedrick just wanted to make sure she wasn't mad at him. With a light laugh, he asked where she was going.
"Set, of course. You can drop me off there." Jessica no longer worried about being spotted by reporters. Her relationship with Cedrick was already public.
"Works for me." Cedrick skipped the company morning meeting. His whole morning was hers.
As they drove toward the set, Jessica blurted out, "Cedrick, what if your mom's against us? What'll we do?"
She'd been up all night worrying about it. What if Cedrick's mom never accepted her?
Cedrick's eyes clouded over. Then he whispered, "Won't happen. My mom's got her opinions, but they don't matter. All that matters is my choice."
"If only I were better. Then you wouldn't be in this tough spot," Jessica said, blaming herself.
"Don't talk like that! You're amazing just as you are," Cedrick frowned, his heart aching for her.
"At first, I thought I was pretty great. But comparison's a killer. There's such a gap between us. Everyone thinks I'm after your money. They say I only got those roles because you're my sugar daddy," Jessica's voice shook with sadness. She felt all her hard work was being erased. Helpless and hopeless.
Cedrick sighed. He kept one hand on the wheel and reached for her cool hand with the other. "Tune out the haters. Stay strong. We'll live our own lives."
"I know, but I can't avoid it. People say anything and everything. No chance to explain." Jessica gave a self-mocking, bitter smile.
"Then don't bother explaining. If you're tired of the entertainment industry, leave it. I'll send you abroad for studies. Or you could just stay by my side and not work at all!" Cedrick hated seeing her so young yet bearing all this gossip. It was so unfair to her.o make sure she really wasn't mad at him, so he gave a small laugh and asked where she was headed.
"I don't know what else to do. Acting's my passion." Jessica's mind was blank. After much thought, creating characters on screen was her greatest love.
Cedrick chuckled. "Then act your heart out. I'll back you all the way."
"I guess I'll have to adjust. Ditch my former prima donna attitude. If anyone says I'm after your wealth, I'll hit back. There's no shame in it," Jessica finally saw the light. With him supporting her, her job didn't matter. What mattered was her peace of mind.
"Right! That's the spirit. Anyone who messes with you will get a taste of your fire!" Cedrick nodded in approval. Then he wondered, was he teaching her to be feisty?
The tension eased. Jessica held his big hand and closed her eyes. "I'll nap a bit. Wake me when we're there. I didn't sleep a wink last night."
"No wonder your eyes are so dark." Cedrick's heart ached.
"You look tired too. You didn't rest well? I noticed your complexion's off." Jessica squeezed his hand, now worrying about him.
"I'm fine. Had some coffee to perk me up. Sleep now," Cedrick, being a man, couldn't admit weakness to his beloved.
Jessica finally relaxed and fell asleep. Soon she was deeply asleep.
At a red light, Cedrick gazed at her sleepy face.
The morning sunlight bathed her, giving her a rosy glow. Cedrick's heart raced again.
He adjusted the AC to a warmer setting and focused on the road.
No way he'd let her go now. The urge to care for her for life grew stronger.
