Chapter 166: Killing The Nightcrawler
Chapter 166: Killing The Nightcrawler
Aaron had heard of a mythological creature that had the head of a stag or moose and used to prowl in the darkness.
A being of insatiable hunger and starvation.
Wendigo.
He nearly froze in place when he saw a similar looking, dangerous nightcrawler standing right in front of his eyes.
His hands were long, so long that they nearly touched the ground. His figure was slightly hunched forward, knees bent at a weird angle.
But shockingly, just like how Aaron had blanked out staring at the monster, the monster was staring back at Aaron.
He snarled, his maw opening wide, causing his darkened, dirty teeth to be on full display as a foul odour assaulted Aaron’s nose.
Luckily it was a good thing since the odour made him snap out of his daze, his mana surging within him as he activated both his offensive skills in an instant.
His aura surged out of him while a connection between himself and the monster was formed.
Reverse senses and dignity of the weak.
The monster noticed the change as well, shrieking loudly before swinging his long whip-like hands at Aaron’s waist.
And despite wearing iron, Aaron knew it wouldn’t protect him against the damage. Nanotech orb was a cosmetic product, no matter how versatile it was.
So he didn’t dare to try and tank that blow, summoning his swordstaff into his hands as he blocked the incoming attack.
By the first exchange, Aaron confirmed the mushfolk’s assumptions.
They really were quite similar in physical strength, but...
"KREEEEEE!" The nightcrawler screamed in pain, his moose-like eyes reddening like a man who smoked 20 joints alone.
They appeared bloodshot, reminding Aaron of the first beast he fought against after joining Claire’s team.
It was a minotaur who showed similar signs before going berserk.
Aaron was completely prepared for the incoming frantic attacks, but none of them came.
Instead, the nightcrawler went completely still, screaming at the sky while a dark mist began to swirl around his emaciated body.
’Oh fuck.’ Aaron remembered the nightmare inducing powers of the nightcrawlers as he activated his safety procedure without a single delay.
Multicoloured light flashbanged both him and the nightcrawler, reducing their visibility to a nigh zero, but Aaron was already prepared for it.
He turned off his night vision and replaced them with reflective tinted glass which was capable of filtering most of the incoming light.
His vision fixed up like magic, and what he saw pleased him to his core.
Right in front of his eyes, the nightcrawler was shrieking and using his long hands to try to close his eyes while stumbling backwards, away from the source of the light.
But how could Aaron let that monster go so easily?
He didn’t even have to do anything, simply keep walking closer and closer to the monster as the nightcrawler backpedaled, moving backwards in the direction that he was supposed to hate.
The campfire.
By the time the nightcrawler’s eyes got slightly used to the bright light, the damage was already dealt.
Aaron didn’t give him a single moment to regain his bearings as he ruthlessly slashed his swordstaff at his neck.
Nightcrawler’s instincts were commendable as he managed to raise a hand to block that deadly blow, getting injured in the process while also falling backwards due to the momentum.
The moment he fell, a large amount of ash and cinders flew into the air as he had fallen right on top of the burning campfire.
More shrieks tore out of his throat, the pain enhanced due to Aaron’s sadistic skill... the reverse senses.
Aaron turned off his lights and switched to the night vision, looking around himself while watching the nightcrawler writhe on the floor in pain.
Who knew if more of these monsters would crawl out of shadows?
He raised his swordstaff with both hands, his eyes focused onto the shadows around himself as he drove the pointed end of the sword through the nightcrawler’s skull.
It showed some resistance at first but slowly and surely, he managed to pierce that thick skull, sliding the blade into the gory, fleshy interior.
The shrieks got wilder for a few moments before getting silenced forever.
"Wow, I’m glad." Aaron nodded in gratitude when he saw the nightcrawler’s corpse catching fire while laying on the ruined campfire.
It didn’t seem like he had much moisture within his emaciated body, which served as a good fuel... although the stinky smell was nauseating.
But no matter how good it was, Aaron couldn’t allow the corpse to burn yet as he dragged it out of the fire, shutting his nose forcefully using the nanobots as he took a deep breath and squatted nearby.
His gag reflexes rammed against the back of his throat, bile rising up the pipes as he held back his bodily instincts and began to slice up the dark heart.
His blade cut through the flesh like butter, leaking a small amount of dark, slimy liquid that caused the nightcrawler’s flesh to sizzle and rot.
"T-That... I can’t believe it was so easy to take one down..." Alyssa whispered on his shoulder, her voice dry from shock.
"It wasn’t easy, child. It was all due to this man’s preparation and also a slight amount of luck." The stealth elder thought otherwise.
Aaron interrupted their chatter with a sigh, "Alyssa, what is this acid like liquid that’s oozing out of this creature’s heart?" he asked.
Alyssa closed her mouth with a cute yelp.
"That... I have never seen it before, but... I have heard stories. I heard the great elder talking about some dark, burning liquid that could kill others with a mere touch." She said hesitatingly.
"Others as in? Your kind? If so, then they are weak enough to die from anything. This acid is nothing special." Aaron chuckled, prodding the heart to look for the elusive blood core that the system had mentioned.
"No... not just my kind. The great elder said this acid is potent enough to even harm the empress..."
