Chapter 92: The High-Stakes Wager. Target: The Jade State League Championship!
Chapter 92: The High-Stakes Wager. Target: The Jade State League Championship!
"Excellent!"
Muse picked up the fountain pen and signed his name on the contract.
The contract was made in duplicate. Muse tucked one copy away in his drawer and handed the other to Fly for safekeeping.
"You can rest assured, however. Before The Jade State League begins, I will fully support your Martial Studies cultivation and help take your strength to the next level," Muse said, comforting Fly.
"Great! So... when exactly do we start the Beast Totem Evolution?" Having signed the contract, Fly felt a massive weight lift off his shoulders, and now he was the one rushing Muse instead.
"Someone's eager," Muse laughed.
"It's not so much that I'm in a rush," Fly shook his head slightly. "Midterms are just around the corner."
"And right after midterms comes The Jade State League."
"With less than half a month left, how could I possibly afford to slack off?"
Hearing this, Muse just offered a faint smile. "Starting up the machine for the Beast Totem Evolution requires some time. Besides, it's already lunchtime. Let Cynthia take you to get something to eat first."
With that, Muse pressed a button on his electric wheelchair.
A few moments later, Cynthia pushed the door open and walked in.
"Cynthia, take Fly to get some food first. Evolution consumes quite a lot of stamina."
Hearing the word "Evolution," Cynthia immediately understood what had transpired.
Faced with Muse's daunting challenge, Fly hadn't chosen to take the 500,000 sponsorship and walk away. Instead, he had courageously signed the Apprenticeship Contract.
"Follow me."
Fly waved at Muse, offering a brief goodbye, before quickly catching up to Cynthia. Curiously, he asked, "With a villa this huge, do you guys not hire any butlers or maids?"
Although he had never lived in a house this big, the estate covered a massive area. Earlier, just walking to the study had taken them quite a bit of time.
Obviously, this wasn't something Cynthia could maintain all by herself.
"Of course we have butlers and maids," Cynthia smiled. "But you are my father's probationary disciple, so it's only natural that I attend to you personally."
The underlying message was clear: ordinary guests were indeed handled by the staff, but Fly was a VIP of the estate. Naturally, they couldn't just brush him off with standard hospitality.
"'Probationary disciple'? Is that even a thing?" Fly smacked his lips, quipping at the ridiculous title.
Muse's study was on the third floor of the villa, while the dining room was on the first floor. Given the sheer size of the estate, walking there took a fair amount of time.
Fly's phone had been buzzing non-stop since earlier. Taking advantage of the walk, he finally found a moment to pull it out and check his messages.
They were practically all from Mr. Carter and Dean Sterling.
Dean Sterling even reminded Fly not to forget to get the autograph for him.
Mr. Carter, on the other hand, was concerned about the contract.
[Vic, since you're a hardcore fan of Grandmaster Muse, how much do you think you should pay for a genuine autograph like this?]

[It's sorted. I'm on my way to grab some food right now. Grandmaster Muse said he's going to help with my Beast Totem Evolution.]
Fly replied to both of them individually.
The very next second, Mr. Carter called him directly.
"Congratulations, Fly! To think you actually became Grandmaster Muse's personal disciple. When you hit the big time, don't forget about me!"
"Remember the little people when you make it big!"
The moment the call connected, Mr. Carter bombarded him with praise, his tone overflowing with excitement.
After all, through Fly, Mr. Carter had essentially managed to latch onto Grandmaster Muse's network.
In the future, whether it was the 'Outstanding Teacher' evaluations or career promotions, as long as he had this connection to lean on, he wouldn't face many hurdles.
If he was lucky, he might even make it onto the school's executive board in his forties.
And all of this, obviously, would be thanks to riding Fly's coattails.
"That contract is just a probationary one. It's only valid for three months. Whether or not I can actually become Grandmaster Muse's disciple is still up in the air," Fly's tone was much calmer than Mr. Carter's.
Naturally, Mr. Carter had noticed that particular detail.
"What's so hard about that? With your current strength, looking at all of Star City High, who in your grade can even compare? Even Genevieve and 'Emperor' Valerius would probably fall short."
"And now, with Grandmaster Muse's full backing, I'd say it's practically a done deal."
"There's absolutely nothing to worry about with that wager agreement."
Just as Fly had expected.
Mr. Carter also assumed that Grandmaster Muse's demands only pertained to his performance within Star City High.
"Mr. Carter, you're dead wrong about that. Grandmaster Muse's demands aren't entirely about my grades at Star City High."
"Then what else is there?" Mr. Carter froze on the other end of the line, quickly pressing for more.
Not just his school grades?
What else could there possibly be?
Did Grandmaster Muse arrange some other kind of challenge for Fly?
"The Jade State League," Fly said, his tone turning serious. "Grandmaster Muse said that if I fail to take home the championship in The Jade State League, not only will he unilaterally terminate the Apprenticeship Contract, but he will also demand a penalty fee of 1.5 million from me."
Mr. Carter: "???"
Mr. Carter was completely stupefied, rooted to the spot. He shook his phone, even starting to wonder if a bad signal had caused him to mishear things.
The Jade State League championship?
Was this a joke?
That was a state-level league!
Did he think this was some Freshman Invitational?
Furthermore, The Jade State League was a team tournament, not an individual one.
Even if you, Fly, received guidance from Grandmaster Muse and saw an increase in strength, what about the rest of your teammates?
Most importantly, Star City High hadn't won a single Jade State League championship since the day it was founded!
There was absolutely zero precedent for this.
Using this kind of demand as a wager against Fly—wasn't that just blatantly bullying the kid?
"Did you really sign the contract?" Mr. Carter drew in a sharp breath. In his eyes, this wasn't a wager agreement at all; this was an indentured servitude contract.
"Of course I..."
"Thank god you didn't sign it." Hearing the relaxed tone on the other end, Mr. Carter didn't even wait for Fly to finish his sentence, subconsciously assuming Fly had backed out. "You're a smart kid."
However, Mr. Carter was also feeling rather puzzled.
Grandmaster Muse should have been well aware of Star City High's actual level.
Why would he come up with such an impossibly difficult wager agreement?
"I signed it." Fly's calm voice drifted through the receiver once again.
"Huh?" Mr. Carter froze once more.
But, Fly hadn't brought this up just to scare Mr. Carter.
"So, Mr. Carter, do you think you can help me secure some extra resources at school?"
"If I win The Jade State League championship and officially become Grandmaster Muse's disciple, it'll make you look incredibly good too, right?"
"Besides, you're the homeroom teacher for the rocket class. When it's time to hand out the rewards, you'll definitely get a piece of the pie."
"When the time comes, you'll be able to tell everyone that it was your students who brought home Star City High's first-ever Jade State League championship trophy in history. How badass would that sound?"
"The teacher who mentored the champions."
Fly immediately began his sweet-talking hustle.
That's right. The reason he had said all this to Mr. Carter was to exchange it for more resource backing, firmly binding himself to Mr. Carter, and by extension, the entirety of Star City High.
Although Muse had a massive estate and profound strength, Fly still wasn't his official disciple. Presumably, Muse wouldn't place all his bets on him just yet and would hold something back.
But Mr. Carter was different.
He was his homeroom teacher, and very likely the homeroom teacher for all the students who would be competing in The Jade State League. That truly made it a situation where they would rise together or fall together.
You're only good allies when your interests are tied together.
Standing nearby, Cynthia had heard the entire conversation between Fly and Mr. Carter.
This kid...
He acts like he's actually completely certain he can win The Jade State League championship.
Cynthia couldn't help but recall her own high school days. Back then, she had also represented Star City High in The Jade State League tournament. However, they had only managed to reach the top eight.
Father, isn't your expectation for Fly a bit too high...? Cynthia murmured to herself.
