My Insect Fusion System: Invincibility Begins with a Cockroach

Chapter 107: The Ghost in the Gravity Chamber

Chapter 107: The Ghost in the Gravity Chamber

"Little Lysander... did he come here often back in the day?" Fly was a bit surprised. Judging by Old Man Ross's tone, it seemed he and Lysander Thorne used to be quite close.

"Came here often?" Genevieve furrowed her brows slightly. "Makes sense. A selfish jerk like him would definitely only care about his own cultivation."

Because of what happened to her older sister, Genevieve had a blood feud with Lysander Thorne. So, whenever people brought him up, it always rubbed her the wrong way.

"Not exactly," Old Man Ross shook his head. "Most of the time, little Lysander came here to accompany his classmates."

Genevieve clicked her tongue slightly. As far as she was concerned, this so-called 'accompanying his classmates' only applied to those cronies in the Student Council. He was just building up his own faction in disguise.

How could someone like Lysander Thorne possibly care about any students outside the Student Council?

Especially those who lacked talent in Martial Studies, in Lysander's eyes, they probably weren't any different from actual trash.

It was only because Old Man Ross didn't know Lysander well enough that he mistakenly thought the guy actually cared about his peers. In reality, that bastard was just cultivating his influence and buying people's loyalty.

"We're here." Suddenly, Old Man Ross stopped at the end of the second-floor corridor. He pulled a small leather wallet out of his pocket, which was stuffed to the brim with a dazzling array of magnetic keycards. He fumbled around for quite a while before finally fishing out the right one and unlocking the door.

Compared to their regular classrooms, the space in here was massive. Not too far from the entrance sat a pitch-black machine.

"Mr. Carter, you know how to fire up this gravity device, right?" At the end of the day, Old Man Ross was just a gatekeeper, he didn't know the first thing about this kind of high-tech equipment.

"Don't worry about it, Mr. Ross. I'll take it from here," Mr. Carter said with a cheerful chuckle.

With that, Old Man Ross handed the room's keycard over to Mr. Carter, telling him to return it once they were done. Having dropped off his instructions, the old man turned and left without looking back.

"Still, how does Old Man Ross have the key to this place?" Jett had found it rather strange from the very beginning.

This Gravity Chamber was the latest model secretly renovated by the Student Council. Knowing their typical behavior, this kind of top-tier resource should have been strictly reserved for their own inner circle.

If that was the case, why on earth would they hand the room's keycard over to a gatekeeper like Old Man Ross for safekeeping?

Wouldn't it have been easier to just leave the keycard in the Student Council clubroom?

Weren't they worried that someone else might sneak in and use the Gravity Chamber they had paid out of pocket to renovate?

Were those guys in the Student Council really that generous?

Jett racked his brain but simply couldn't make heads or tails of it.

"Who cares? It's the Student Council's stuff—we'd be fools not to use it," Genevieve shrugged, speaking with complete nonchalance. She couldn't care less about the underlying details. As far as she was concerned, any chance to fleece the Student Council was an opportunity to be seized!

Any chance to fleece them is a pure win!

"Who wants to give it a spin first?" Mr. Carter scanned the group.

Although the room was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate all four of them training simultaneously, Mr. Carter had to consider the fact that Fly and the others were only high school freshmen. This was their first time cultivating in a Gravity Chamber. Without proper preparation, who knew what kind of danger might pop up?

Just to play it safe, Mr. Carter felt it was best to go one by one for their first time. That way, if things actually went south, he could step in immediately without spreading himself too thin.

"Then Mr. Carter and I will stand guard for everyone," Fly said, summoning his Beast Totem as he spoke.

A faint shimmer of light flashed, and the phantom silhouette of The Roach Matriarch slowly materialized behind Fly.

'Emperor' Valerius gazed at the phantom of Fly's Roach Matriarch, a flicker of surprise flashing through his eyes.

After all, the last time he saw Fly, his Roach Matriarch's aura hadn't felt quite so... eerie.

Especially the staff it was holding, which was covered in tiny, speckled barbs, looking exactly like the hind legs of a cockroach.

Coupled with its tall and majestic figure, and the exoskeleton encasing its entire body that was black with a hint of red, even someone as proud as 'Emperor' Valerius couldn't help but feel slightly creeped out just looking at it.

"This guy Fly's strength is like a whole different beast every single day," 'Emperor' Valerius couldn't help but marvel.

However, just as Mr. Carter was about to summon his own Beast Totem to stand guard for Jett and the others, a faint pulse of light suddenly flared up in the corner of the room, instantly drawing everyone's attention.

"What's going on?" Jett sucked in a sharp breath, subconsciously taking a few steps back.

"Did the Student Council rig this place, worried someone might sneak use their Gravity Chamber?" Genevieve furrowed her brows. "No wonder they felt so comfortable leaving the keycard with Old Man Ross. Turns out they had this nasty little trap waiting for us."

To her, given the Student Council's usual modus operandi, pulling a stunt like this wasn't surprising in the least.

"Fly, take it out," Genevieve bluntly urged Fly to make a move.

"Everyone, be careful," Fly warned, his voice low and steady as his eyes tracked the source of the light. He raised his hand, pointing his fingers dead ahead, fully prepared to meet the enemy. His Skill, Thunder Strike, was locked and loaded.

In the blink of an eye, right where the light had flashed, a completely translucent young girl slowly materialized before them. But calling her a young girl was a stretch, as only her body's silhouette resembled a human's. Her pitch-black hair cascaded naturally down to her waist, a pair of dark, spiraling ram horns sprouted from her forehead, and her face was entirely concealed behind a deep crimson mask.

Her pupils burned a brilliant golden-yellow, and her body was clad in a set of armor forged entirely from ice-blue scales.

Fly's gaze naturally drifted downward, only to discover that she didn't have a lower body. To be precise, she was hovering in mid-air in the form of a phantom.

Overall, she looked exactly like the classic demons you'd see straight out of a movie.

With her arrival, the temperature in the room began to plummet at an alarming rate.

In less than the span of two breaths, the air Fly and the others exhaled turned into clearly visible puffs of white mist.

A layer of visible frost began spreading outward from directly beneath the phantom girl, forming a perfect circle that instantly swallowed the entire floor of the Gravity Chamber.

"What the hell is that thing?! Is it a Beast Warrior or an actual ghost?!" Jett couldn't help but shriek.

In all his years of living, this was the absolute first time he had ever run into something like this.

"Mr. Carter, what exactly is going on here?" Genevieve turned to ask the teacher.

He was a faculty member at Star City High, after all. Having worked at the school for years, he had to know something about what was happening, right?

But in reality, Mr. Carter was just as clueless about the situation unfolding in front of them.

He could vaguely sense that the entity before them was some sort of Beast Totem, yet he couldn't detect the presence of any Beast Warrior nearby controlling it.

Furthermore, even if the folks in the Student Council didn't want them using the Gravity Chamber, they wouldn't resort to such lethal measures, would they?

The temperature in the room continued to drop. Fly and the other students couldn't stop themselves from shivering, and even Mr. Carter, a seasoned teacher, was struggling to fend off the biting chill.

Mr. Carter could feel the cold growing increasingly bone-piercing by the second, and the phantom girl showed absolutely zero signs of stopping. How was this supposed to be a mere warning? If things kept going like this, it was going to turn into straight-up murder.

No matter how ruthless the Student Council was, or how massive their backing might be, they wouldn't dare to just casually slaughter people, would they?

This was still a society governed by the rule of law, after all. The consequences of wanton murder were no joke!

"No..."

Mr. Carter suddenly shook his head.

He had crossed paths with Preston York and Lance Wolfe before, and he knew a thing or two about them.

At the very least, he had seen their Beast Totems.

The phantom girl hovering before them was definitely not the handiwork of Preston York or his crew.

But the most crucial point was that Mr. Carter could distinctly sense that the strength of this phantom girl was leagues above his own.

"Just who is behind this?"

Mr. Carter was left utterly bewildered.

But, the phantom girl that suddenly appeared made no move to attack. She simply hovered there in silence, her eyes dull and devoid of light, as if she had lost all sense of awareness.

Fly even tried using his Roach Matriarch Totem to confirm.

Cockroaches possessed a far stronger perception of danger than average creatures. Even the slightest hint of hostility would be detected instantly, sending them scurrying out of sight.

And right now, Fly wasn't sensing an ounce of hostility from the phantom girl.

Fly slowly lowered his raised fingers. He was also struggling to wrap his head around what was going on.

Right at that moment, the biting cold suddenly dissipated, and the temperature in the room slowly began to rise. Fly and the others gradually felt warmer. Even the frost on the floor was slowly getting thinner.

"Could it be... she's here to protect whoever is training?" Fly raised an eyebrow.
