Chapter 262 - 242 Dinner Party Turmoil_1
Zhang Yichen felt so happy that he couldn’t even think of anything else. The girl he had waited for so long was finally willing to go home with him. What’s more, this trip home wasn’t just to meet his parents, but to host an engagement party. Could he be any happier?
He was over the moon, rushing back home to share the good news with his grandfather. Upon hearing it, Old Master Zhang’s heart blossomed with joy. He had always hoped his grandson could marry the girl he had set his eyes on, but because of his daughter-in-law’s reasons, it had been delayed time and time again. Now the matter he cared about so much could finally become reality, how could he not agree to the marriage? When Yichen mentioned hosting the engagement party at home, he didn’t say anything, only asked for the name of the bride. Which one was she? Upon hearing that his grandson’s future wife was the girl he had approved of, he didn’t say anything else and immediately agreed.
"Grandpa, does that mean you approve of me marrying her?" Zhang Yichen didn’t understand why his grandfather had no expression upon hearing the news, and had simply agreed.
"Yes, I’ve agreed. Did you want me to oppose you?" Old Master Zhang retorted. He knew what was on his grandson’s mind, he knew what Yichen was thinking, and he wouldn’t do anything to make his grandson feel troubled.
"Grandpa, thank you for your trust. Once I’m married, I’ll be doubly good to you, because you are my grandpa. Thank you for raising me all these years, and thank you for all the guidance you’ve given me. I’ll never forget your teachings for as long as I live, Grandpa, you are the best grandfather in the world..." As Zhang Yichen spoke, his tears started to form, and Old Master Zhang saw his grandson’s eyes were already brimming. He knew his grandson was genuinely grateful.
"Alright now, you’re such a grown man, and you’re about to have an engagement party. After you get married, you’ll be an adult, you can’t be crying at the drop of a hat like now. If you’re still like this after getting married, you’ll only make others look down on you. Since you two have decided to get married, from now on, you must live well together, without getting into moods at the drop of a hat. The decision to live together shows that both of you have thoroughly thought about how to face your future lives. Hereafter, don’t leave anything unresolved that makes you unhappy. Furthermore, I hope your parents can really restrain themselves a bit, and not hurt her parents anymore. After all, we’re all going to be family. Hurting each other like this never ends well for anyone. Yichen, remember, the happiness between the two of you is not given by others but created by you both. If you want to live happily, you must work hard. There are no free lunches in this world, so don’t just sit around waiting to be fed because that way, your life will be incredibly tough and not at all happy!"
Old Master Zhang advised his grandson earnestly. In his eyes, he could do without anything, but as long as his grandson was happy and joyful, that was enough.
"Grandpa, don’t worry, whether I’m married or whatever happens, I won’t leave you alone at home. You raised me, led me to my accomplishments, and helped me find such a wonderful girlfriend. How could I not be grateful? If I were to abandon you, my grandfather, just to be with my girlfriend, I would be committing the worst betrayal, and even Heaven wouldn’t forgive me. Grandpa, please trust that I will never betray the trust you have in me, nor fail to meet your expectations!"
"Grandpa believes in you. Whether you will live with Grandpa in the future is not important. Grandpa just wants you to be happy..."
The two of them joyfully decided on their future life together.
Time really flew by, and before they knew it, three days had passed, and it was the day of their engagement party. He was truly so happy.
Ran Zhihan had just arrived at the engagement venue when Xia Jing came over and pulled Ran Zhihan aside.
Ran Zhihan saw Xia Jing at that moment and felt utterly baffled. She couldn’t understand why her future mother-in-law had pulled her aside during the engagement banquet.
"Auntie, just say what you want to say. Why did you pull me aside? Is there something that others shouldn’t hear?"
"I want to ask you—as someone who had chosen forgiveness at the hospital, why do you go around spreading that it was me who mistreated you? Why do you indulge in spreading rumors that are harmful to me? Do you feel content only when you corner me in this family? Do you realize how much damage your rumors have done to me? Do you know how important a person’s reputation is, and how can you be so careless about my reputation just for the sake of your revenge?"
Ran Zhihan couldn’t grasp what her future mother-in-law meant. When had she ever spread rumors? She hadn’t done anything—why must all the blame be thrust upon her? She wasn’t born to take the fall for others!
"I don’t understand what you’re implying. If you’re here to offer your blessings, then I welcome them. But if you’re not, please don’t cause trouble. After all, a person marries only once in their life; this marriage is very important to me, and I don’t want it tainted by anyone’s ill wishes!"
"You’re right, I am here to offer my blessings today, but they just might be a little different than you’d expect," she said.
Their mother-in-law and daughter-in-law exchanged these few words and did so unpleasantly, just when the ceremony was about to begin. Ran Zhihan slowly walked toward the end of the red carpet where her Prince Charming stood waiting for her, and at that moment, suddenly, a group of people burst in, smashing and destroying everything at the banquet.
"Who did this? Don’t you know that today is my engagement party? Where did you people come from? Why would you do such a thing?" Zhang Yichen yelled furiously.
"It was me." Xia Jing stepped forward. "I told them to do it. Ladies and gentlemen, do you know what kind of person the woman in the gown here today truly is? She might act well-mannered, but behind the scenes she will stop at nothing to get her way! Because of her, my son has repeatedly prevented me from returning to our home, and my father-in-law, because of this woman, time after time, has kept my husband and me out of the house. Do you really think such a woman can be good? Don’t be fooled by her appearance; she has also spread rumors about me, claiming I harm her. I believe you all must have heard these rumors—do you actually believe this girl?"
At this point, everyone began whispering among themselves, and not many were willing to believe the innocence of the girl standing before them. Some people may seem naive and innocent, yet in their actions, they can be cruel and ruthless.
Ran Zhihan felt furious. She knew her mother-in-law did not like her, but she had never imagined she would go to such malicious lengths. Angry, she ran out of the banquet hall.
