Chapter 702: Love Takes Root (147)
The people inside were drinking merrily.
Outside, unexpectedly, it had started to rain, which only added to their troubles.
The two of them waited outside in the rain for the right moment.
After a full two hours, the people inside drunkenly collapsed and fell asleep.
The candlelight in the room was still bright, casting light in the pitch-black night surrounding it.
Antonio and Long Tianjiao held hands and approached the door, their footsteps as light as they could possibly be.
It was fortunate that those who had been drinking were in a deep sleep.
They failed to notice someone slipping in right under their noses.
They did not find any phones or other communication devices.
Antonio took a large cloth bag and filled it with the steamed buns from the pot, also adding a large teapot and a small pot. Before leaving, he also grabbed a lighter and a dagger.
When he reached the door, he stopped, picked up a thin quilt, and took it with him.
The two put on the men’s raincoats, carried the cloth bag and quilt, and left.
Knowing that these people would surely come after them once they woke up, the two quickly left the place after having eaten and drank their fill.
They only knew to walk in one direction, not knowing exactly where it led.
They walked and stopped intermittently, and just as dawn was approaching, the rain finally stopped.
The two rested and took a brief nap at this spot before continuing on their journey.
This was like an adventure of survival.
It was unwise to linger too long.
They thought that if they just kept walking, they would eventually find their way out.
But what drove them to despair was that after five full days, their hopes were completely extinguished.
It felt like they were caught in a massive vortex maze, unable to find an end.
Moreover, their food was nearly depleted by then.
If they had not discovered a river and followed it, they might not have even had water to drink.
"We can’t go on like this," Antonio promptly adjusted the escape plan. "We need to settle down first and then slowly look for an exit, or we’ll starve here."
"I think so too, let’s settle down first, address our survival needs, and then think of a way to leave this place," Long Tianjiao’s gaze suddenly fell on the opposite side of the river. "Look there..."
Antonio looked carefully and spotted a treehouse, which seemed to have signs of habitation, making them unsure whether to approach it or not.
After carefully scouting from this side of the river, they saw no signs of anyone.
"Could it be abandoned? No one living there?"
"We should still check it out." Antonio pulled her along as they crossed over the ice-covered river surface.
Nervously crossing over, to their surprise, there was no one alive inside.
It really was an abandoned treehouse.
The roof was exposed, but it was fixable and they could live there.
The past few days of running had put them through a great deal of suffering, without a single good sleep.
Especially because they had been soaked in the rain a few days ago, it was cold, and their hands were frostbitten, their bodies unbearably cold.
They didn’t even have a shelter to protect them from the wind and rain.
Now, they had finally found a place.
Antonio spread the thin quilt on the ground, "You rest well first, I’ll see if there are fish in the river, and try to spear some with branches."
"Is that possible?"
"I’ll try."
Long Tianjiao nodded, watching him go, she thought about the only quilt being spread on the ground and what they would cover themselves with at night in this freezing season.
Thus, she forced herself up, left the treehouse and gathered all the dry leaves from the ground into the treehouse.
