Chapter 460: Clear Skies, a Melancholic Logan
Chapter 460: Clear Skies, a Melancholic Logan
"Born to toil, born to toil!"
Logan took two deep breaths of cold air. After clearing his head, he shot straight into the sky amid the startled cries of the cats.
In no time, he reached the extreme high altitude.
Looking down at the Ancient Forest shrouded beneath layers of clouds, a dazzling white light began to radiate from his chest.
That light rapidly spread to cover Logan’s entire body. In an instant, Logan seemed to transform into light itself.
The thick, heavy storm clouds that had formed across the sky due to the sudden drop in temperature were swept away just like that, and light once more appeared throughout the forest.
Orichalcum Pulse — Secondary Trait Effect: Sunny Day!!
The temperature, which had previously been forced down, rebounded rapidly, quickly climbing back to nearly thirty degrees.
If this had been in his previous life, such an exaggerated temperature swing would likely have killed off large numbers of organisms unable to adapt. Even technologically advanced humanity would not have been able to withstand it.
But this was the New World, where bioenergy was abundant!
For the creatures here, aside from a handful of overly fragile plants and animals, the rest would experience at most some mild discomfort. In just a short hour, they would fully readjust.
Along the coastal regions, ice and snow melted rapidly. Within Astera, the Commander—who had only just been wearing snow wolf–set thermal gear—returned to his tent the moment he saw the storm clouds disperse, changing back into his usual attire.
Through a gap in the tent, he watched until the ice and snow had completely melted. Only then did he step back out, his face full of calm.
Everything was within his expectations!
Sunblaze Dragon had made his move!
...
Having only just crossed the Great Ravine and now situated in the Coral Highlands, Velkhana was facing off against the thunder rumbling not far away.
As a result, this sudden warmth not only miraculously dispelled the cold it was leaking out—cold that had frozen over the water-source area—but also faintly imposed a certain degree of suppression on its ice-element energy. Under the effect of this warm current, fire-element energy in the air became extremely active.
Casting a wary glance toward the direction the warm current had come from, it did not bull its way into the region ahead where thunder roared. Instead, it chose to detour and continued onward toward the Elder’s Recess.
...
At the highest point of the Coral Highlands, Kirin—struggling to maintain the lightning climate—looked speechlessly toward the direction of the Ancient Forest.
Logan’s behavior of stealing the weather was simply too outrageous!
Who steals the weather of the entire New World?
Leaving aside whether this would cause negative effects in certain parts of the New World, just from what had happened a moment ago—if it hadn’t managed to maintain the thunderstorm region it was using to deter Velkhana—this would have been a huge loss of face!
Fortunately, at the critical moment, the Tempered Namielle that also lived in the highest-region area lent a hand. As a half lightning-element Elder Dragon, it injected fresh lightning-element energy into the thunderclouds above, and only then did it preserve Kirin’s face.
After Velkhana left the area, Kirin no longer persisted. It allowed the thunderclouds to be dispersed by the warm current, then knelt and lay prone beside the water source, lowering its head to drink silently, as if nothing that had just happened had ever occurred.
...
The Sunny Day brought about by Orichalcum Pulse was indeed somewhat overbearing. This was also Logan’s first time formally employing this trait, and he had not expected its impact to be so great.
However, because Velkhana’s extreme-cold weather effects were likewise directed at the entire continent, Logan’s actions this time could not be considered a disruption of the ecosystem. On the contrary, they could be regarded as maintaining the New World’s normal ecology, and so on the first day he simply let matters stand as they were.
On the second and third days, as Velkhana entered the Elder’s Recess and leapt into the magma to begin solidifying new "clothing," its abilities gradually came under control. On Logan’s side, corresponding reductions were also made in moderation, keeping the New World’s climate consistently within an appropriate range.
As a result, when Darren and the others hurried back to the New World aboard the Mobile Research Base, they discovered that there were no abnormalities at all, which inevitably left them somewhat surprised.
Because they had ample manpower, they quickly tracked down and directly observed Velkhana’s presence.
Based on the other party’s violent behavior on the icefields, they made a preliminary determination that Velkhana was the source of the "mysterious song," and accordingly launched an investigation. Having experienced the threat posed by Velkhana when its energy was out of control, and upon realizing that Velkhana was heading toward the New World, they promptly gathered the members of the recommendation group and returned to the New World.
As a result, things over here were instead completely calm, which made them all start to doubt whether they had once again misjudged the situation.
After communicating with the Commander, the group hurried back to the New World without delay, wanting to see whether Sunblaze Dragon was present or not.
By checking whether Sunblaze Dragon was at the Ancient Tree, they could determine whether their judgment about Velkhana was correct.
After all, the mysterious song was something capable of affecting the Everstream. If Velkhana truly were the culprit, given Sunblaze Dragon’s temperament, he would have already gone knocking on its door.
...
On the Ancient Tree, after inquiring at the Gathering Hub, they learned that Sunblaze Dragon, aside from hanging in the sky as a sun each day, remained quietly on the Ancient Tree at other times. For a moment, Darren and the others did not know whether they should feel disappointed or relieved.
But no matter what, there was one thing they did not feel—awkwardness.
Mistaking the wrong Elder Dragon and making it take the blame was hardly something that had happened only once or twice. They had long since grown accustomed to it.
Since Velkhana was not the source of the mysterious song, it stood to reason that the real culprit was still lingering in the icefields, and their steps could not stop.
Carrying both a desire for exploration and a heavy sense of responsibility, the members of the recommendation group stayed at the Ancient Tree for only a single day before setting out once more, determined to investigate everything thoroughly in the shortest possible time!
Only, this departure would last for more than half a month.
As large numbers of volcanoes in the icefields became exhausted, vast stretches of glaciers began to collapse and fall amid continuous tremors. Even the temperature grew increasingly extreme.
Some monsters in the icefields with strong environmental adaptability began migrating toward the New World.
The icefields and the New World were not two completely separate continents. Strictly speaking, the icefields were an attached landmass connected to the New World, merely situated at the very end of the Everstream. Combined with its geographical location, this gave rise to the frigid region that existed there.
The connection point between the two landmasses lay at the northernmost edge of the Ancient Forest. Through that continental shelf came creatures such as subspecies of Anjanath, and Fulgur Anjanath—rare in the New World, yet common in the icefields.
Clad in thick, heavy fur and seemingly merely cold-resistant, yet in reality possessing extremely strong environmental adaptability—capable of surviving in virtually any environment—mild-tempered, ignoring weaker creatures but favoring heavy blows against large monsters, a herbivorous brute wyvern species: Banbaro!
All of them crossed the continental shelf into the New World, making its already fiery ecology even more diverse and colorful.
In contrast to the fervor outside, Logan himself felt somewhat melancholic at this moment.
After the area around his heart transformed into an energy organ forming an internal energy circulation, Logan discovered that his influence on the environment was growing greater and greater.
Ordinary monsters adapt to the environment. Elder Dragons influence the environment. Disaster-level Elder Dragons reshape the environment. And ecological-transcendent Forbidden beings can directly create environments of their own!
At this moment, Logan was already showing signs of such a tendency.
Even if he did nothing at all, the Ancient Tree—most deeply affected by his energy—was still undergoing rapid changes.
What had originally only turned into a strange, fantastical sight of half tree and half crystal had now gone further: the Ancient Tree was beginning to grow Terastal crystals rather than normal branches!
If this trend continued, one day the entire Ancient Tree might directly become a Terastal Tree. Such an area—dense to an exaggerated degree, even capable of isolating bioenergy—would likely be uninhabitable even for Aki, who was most deeply affected by the Symbiosis trait, let alone other living beings.
This also meant that, as Logan continued to grow, and once the ecological impact was taken into account, he would likely leave this Ancient Tree in the future—a place he had lived in for decades and poured decades of effort into building.
