Chapter 301: The Dusk Star’s Wish (II)
Chapter 301: The Dusk Star’s Wish (II)
The Dusk Star was looking at the night sky in despair before he laughed mirthlessly. "Goddess, is this really how I will live in each of my cycles? Turning into nothing but a monster who ruins everything that he touches? A lonely bastard with a tormented heart? A father who couldn’t even teach his son right?"
Then, he lifted his hand as if trying to grasp the moon and said, "Selene, Goddess of the Moon. Before my imminent death in this cycle, I wish for one thing to change me in my next incarnation."
"I wish to have a companion of my own, just like my son. Let me have a faerie who would love me unconditionally—a faerie who can be my love, bear my child, and end my suffering."
"I promise to love that faerie with all my heart. Please give me a faerie to light my way, so I can change myself in my next incarnation..."
Slowly, the Dusk Star closed his eyes and died alone after suffering endless agony all his life, just as prophesied for both himself and his son.
"No..." Kael murmured while shaking his head. "No... no... NO!"
He couldn’t believe that he had done something so foolish as to wish for a faerie companion. He shouldn’t have done that, because he knew a cursed being like him should’ve stayed alone. At least if he hadn’t met Sisi in this life, she wouldn’t have died!
"Sisi... wife... I am sorry. It was me... I... I wished for something so stupid. Now I’ve killed you because I wanted a companion..."
Kael couldn’t wait to wake up from this dream and kill himself. That was the befitting punishment for a bastard like him, wasn’t it?
But his wife interrupted his despairing words. "It is never your fault, husband. Our union is fated, and so are the birth of our daughter and my death."
"You wanted a change in your endless suffering, and now you have changed. Because I know that you will never go back to that ruinous Dusk Star from your previous incarnations. You will be a good father to Jojo and our daughter."
"What is the point of living if I can’t be with you?" he asked again. "Once this dream is over, I will never be able to see you or even hear your voice. Do you not realize how painful that is?"
"I know it is painful, husband—that’s why I am here. Not only because I want you to take care of our children, but also because I will promise you a reunion."
"A... reunion?"
"I promise that you will be able to see me again once you’ve done your duty in this world, husband," Sisi said. "Raise our children with both love and discipline. Make them proper rulers of the Beast Kingdom and the Faerie Land."
"I’ve done my duty to change your incarnation for the better. It is now your duty to prove that my sacrifice is not in vain, and that you will be a good man in this incarnation."
"Once you’ve proven that the Dusk Star and Dawn Star of this era can lead a different life, then I shall meet you personally, my dearest husband."
"Promise me this is true, wife," Kael said. "As long as you promise, then I will have the strength to continue living."
"I, Siselia Silk, promise to meet my husband again once he has fulfilled his promise. As fate has preordained us to be together through life, not even death can separate us."
That vow was like a flood that washed away all the despair in his heart. Of course, it was impossible to make himself completely happy even if he was promised a reunion.
The loneliness was still there as well, even with two children by his side. That would never change the fact that he had lost his beloved.
But at least he wouldn’t die alone and in agony. He would be with his beloved in the end, and that was all that mattered.
"Then, I promise to love our children and raise them with discipline. I will make them great rulers of their respective kingdoms, and thus I can reunite with you, my wife, with pride and the recognition that I am a changed man."
Sisi giggled. "That’s good. I will hold onto your promise, husband."
Kael was still unable to move his body, but he could feel his wife turning around and hugging him from behind.
"This is not a separation, but a promise for a beautiful tomorrow. Until then, husband."
Then, Kael felt that he was hit with extreme drowsiness as the world around him slowly crumbled, and he fell into nothingness.
Kael gasped as he woke up from that long dream. He looked at his surroundings and realized that he had returned to the real world. As he checked the crystal in his palm, he saw that the crystal was gone, leaving only the Astilbe flower, which signified dedication and longing.
Then, he looked around and realized that Jojo wasn’t by his side. He got up immediately to find his son.
But at that moment, a giant rose suddenly appeared right outside the hut. Kael approached it to check, and as the petals slowly opened one by one, he saw his son, Jojo, carrying a baby girl wrapped in a leaf.
The baby was suckling on flower nectar like it was her mother’s milk.
Jojo lifted his head to stare at his father, and his eyes quickly welled up with tears.
"Daddy, Mommy’s gone..."
Kael held his breath. He tried his best to stay calm in front of his son despite the wave of despair in his heart.
He slowly approached his son and knelt in front of him. He hugged his son and daughter in a gentle and warm embrace and whispered,
"Mommy is not gone. We will reunite with her again, Jojo. She promised you that as well, right?"
"Nn..." Jojo nodded. "Mommy left me with a seed. Her Grandma said that we should plant it in the courtyard."
"Then let’s go home, with your baby sister," Kael said.
"Mmm..."
