Chapter 266: Uncle Marik (II)

[Song Recommendation: Elfen Lied OST - Lilium.]

"Hurt you? No, you’re wrong, Jojo. I do not want to hurt you or Sisi. I just want to separate you from her and bring her with me to Jing Forest," Marik replied. "As for you... you already have your father anyway. You don’t need Sisi too. So don’t be greedy and hand her to me."

Jojo didn’t budge at all. "Separating me from Sisi is hurting me, Uncle."

"And I don’t care, boy. We were meant to be together until your bastard father found us!" Marik raised his voice. "If only you were not the Dawn Star, we could’ve lived a good life in Jing Forest!"

"Marik!" Sisi summoned another vine, trying to wrap it around Marik’s mouth to make him stop cursing and yelling at the boy.

But Marik broke the vine easily. "I am still being kind to you, Jojo. Let go of Sisi and Uncle Marik will leave as soon as possible."

"What if I don’t want to, Uncle?" Jojo asked.

"Then Uncle would have to knock you out and take Sisi with me, boy," Marik said. "You should know that Uncle’s hand hits really hard after our many hunts, right?"

Jojo’s golden eyes continued staring unblinkingly towards Uncle Marik, and he nodded. "I think Sisi is right, Uncle. You are not my Uncle Marik."

"My Uncle Marik will never hurt me or Sisi. Maybe the real Uncle Marik has already left Roc Forest and lives somewhere else, right?"

"Heh, whatever you say, kid. We don’t have much time anyway."

Though it was difficult for his heart, Marik decided to forcefully separate Jojo from Sisi. But the moment Marik was about to yank him away from his beloved, Jojo’s golden eyes suddenly shone bright, and the sky turned dark instantly, as if the sun decided to shy away once Jojo decided to do something with his power.

Marik looked up to the dark sky. His heartbeat began to race as his instinct told him that he had to take Sisi away immediately.

As he returned his gaze towards the boy, he was petrified on the spot, because not only had Jojo’s eyes turned bright gold, even his entire body was now covered in a gold aura.

The same aura also enveloped Sisi, and as the aura grew bigger and brighter, Marik found himself taking his hand away from Jojo out of reflex.

Because Jojo’s body became too hot to even touch, as if he could explode anytime soon.

"Jojo, what are you—" Marik held his breath as Jojo tried to touch his skin.

Marik’s beast instinct was never wrong, and his instinct told him that he would actually disintegrate if he got touched by the boy.

So he took a few steps back.

"Why are you backing off, Uncle? Don’t you want to take Sisi away from me?" Jojo asked. His voice was distorted, making him sound more like a golden demon than a four-year-old boy.

Marik gritted his teeth. He looked at Leah and his assassins, but his heart jumped when he realized that none of them moved.

Yes, everyone except him and Jojo was frozen in time. Even Sisi became nothing but a beautiful statue right now.

"You—w-what are you doing, boy?!"

"Uncle, since you want to stay with Sisi so much, then I will help you," Jojo said with his distorted voice. "After all, Uncle was my Uncle for a while, and you saved Sisi from a bear too."

Jojo pointed in a random direction, and another Sisi appeared in that spot.

This Sisi was still wearing the same rugged tunic and bear cloak from that time when they were together during winter in Roc Forest.

She smiled at Marik and said, "Marik, what are you doing there? It’s time for dinner. I just roasted the deerling that Jojo caught for us today!"

"Sisi—" Marik knew that the Sisi who waved at him was just an illusion. But Marik had been daydreaming about her the whole time, that seeing her smiling at him again made Marik lose control over himself.

He walked towards the illusion slowly. Then he saw the illusion of Jojo standing right next to Sisi, waving at him, with his eyes not yet turned golden.

It was the boy that Marik loved, not this cursed monster with gold eyes and absurd power that could ruin humanity.

"Uncle! I’ve caught my first deerling! Let’s eat together!"

"Jojo..." Marik’s heart began to ache thinking of the unreachable dream that he once had.

If only he had been strong enough to defeat Kael.

If only he had brought Sisi and Jojo out of Roc Forest faster.

If only Jojo had not been the Dawn Star of this era.

There were many what-ifs that he wished would come true.

Once he reached this illusion of Jojo and Sisi, he hugged them both in a tight embrace.

"Sisi... Jojo... I’m home..." Marik muttered.

"Uh-huh, but you said that we will have to go to Jing Forest in the morning. So let’s just eat our dinner first and then rest before our travel, alright?" Sisi said.

"Uncle Marik, this is the gift that I’ve prepared for you. You are allowed to live in this alternate world, where you, Sisi, and I have escaped to Jing Forest and started anew there. I promise that you’ll have your own litter of whelps with her," the Dawn Star said. "But in exchange, you cannot return to the real world. You’re forever trapped in this place. Call it an illusion or something else; in the end, you still get what you want."

Marik closed his eyes and nodded. "I will stay in here, with my family. We will go to Jing Forest tomorrow morning, and then start anew there, free from the torment of the Dusk Star and Roc Forest."

"Very well. You’ve saved my beloved mother, and I shall reward you for it," the Dawn Star said. "Farewell, Uncle Marik."

And with that, the illusion of Sisi and Jojo disappeared alongside Marik, who voluntarily succumbed into the never-ending daydream.

The sky turned bright once more, and Jojo’s golden aura disappeared.
