Chapter 191: The Trafficker
Chapter 191: The Trafficker
Movila looked at her pained expression, feeling somewhat conflicted inside.
"Mommy..."
A little girl, who looked to be about four or five years old, suddenly walked out from the crowd and hugged the woman from behind.
The little girl's face was already streaked with tears, her clothes were tattered and filthy, indicating no one had washed them for her during this period.
Just as others were about to pull them away, Movila spoke up:
"Master Mentor, let's help them... at least try..."
In the end, her heart softened, and she chose to help them.
"Alright."
Loren stopped the carriage. This action once again moved the villagers, and immediately several more people rushed forward, tearfully saying their children were also missing.
"Don't rush, speak slowly."After Loren and the others got off the carriage, someone came to feed Loren's horse. They recognized it was a Magical Beast and specifically fed it meat.
Seeing Loren was truly willing to help them with this matter, the village chief quickly led Loren to the Church. There was enough space there to accommodate everyone and it was convenient for Loren to question them one by one.
When getting off the carriage, Loren noticed Movila had become smaller again. A crow suddenly appeared in the sky;
Movila had already used the crow to investigate.
The carriage had curtains, so people outside couldn't see inside. Even if Movila had shrunk, they wouldn't notice.
"Speak one by one."
After arriving at the Church, Loren questioned everyone one by one. But from their answers, Loren didn't find anything too unusual. The only oddity was the frequency.
This village wasn't large, yet several children could go missing in a single day. No matter how closely the parents watched, children would still disappear.
However, the children also vanished outside of others' sight, and at the time, the children were alone.
"So urgent?"
Normal traffickers should prioritize their own safety, operating by moving around, not committing crimes too many times in the same place. Moreover, to avoid raising people's vigilance, their actions wouldn't be too frequent.
But this time was completely different. Still, Loren had no leads for the moment.
"Are there any dangers nearby? Or have many strangers suddenly appeared here?"
If Plague Believers had truly come, even if they could disguise their appearance, they couldn't disguise their faces. Any unfamiliar faces would be recognized.
But everyone shook their heads. No unfamiliar faces had appeared here.
"That's strange then..."
Loren took out a map and glanced at it. This was the border. Although it was still some distance from the village Movila mentioned, it was unlikely that the Evil God's believers were concentrated in only one village. There might be other places with believers of Evil Gods.
Furthermore, there were some scattered small countries nearby. These small countries were just like the Land of the Evil Dragon Loren had once visited. They were called small countries, but were essentially just villages.
"Master Mentor, do you hear any singing?"
Just as Loren didn't know what to do, Anna suddenly spoke up. She was rubbing her temples, seeming uncomfortable.
"Singing?"
As a Musician, Loren's ears were very sharp. He could hear many faint sounds. It was impossible for Anna to hear singing while he didn't.
Unless this singing was targeted.
Loren swept his gaze over the crowd and immediately noticed something was wrong:
"Where is your child?"
Loren looked at the woman who had first come to beg him. Her daughter had been holding onto her, and she had been gripping her daughter's hand tightly. Her son was already missing;
she didn't want her daughter to disappear too.
"Where is my child?"
Only when Loren pointed it out did she realize something was wrong. Logically, being so concerned about her child, it was impossible for her not to notice her child's disappearance.
"Don't panic yet. Did you hear any singing?"
Loren calmed the woman and then asked everyone. Except for Movila, everyone shook their heads, including the Witches. Only Anna and Movila among those present had heard it.
The purpose of the singing was very clear.
"It seems the function of this singing isn't simple. Only children can hear it. Although adults can't hear it, their senses are also numbed by the singing.
"The children were influenced by this singing and left on their own, taking advantage of the moment when the adults' senses were numbed."
Although the little girl had disappeared, Loren revealed a smile. He had been worried about having no starting point, but now the mastermind behind it had actively revealed a clue. The rest would be much simpler.
The Witches' mental resistance was relatively high, so the singing couldn't affect Anna and the others.
"Let's go out together and search for the singer. Anna, Movila, I'll have to trouble you.
"Everyone else stays here. Only the three of us will go out, to avoid alerting the enemy."
Loren immediately stood up, placing his hand on the hilt of his blade.
He was also a father, so he deeply hated those who targeted children.
"Alright..."
Although they were all anxious, they trusted Loren's choice.
"Let's go. Split up. Call the others immediately if you find anything..."
The village wasn't large;
the three of them were enough to search it once. With Movila patrolling the sky, it would be easy to spot anything unusual.
...
On the main street, a line of children was queuing up and walking out of the village. The one at the front wore white clothes and was singing a song. The adults around paid no attention to what was happening here.
"Caw!"
The crow circling in the sky let out a piercing cry. The white-clad girl at the front looked up at the crow, her gaze unfriendly.
Only then did Movila realize it wasn't a little girl at all, but a dwarf—ugly-faced, but of a height indistinguishable from a child's.
"Where are you going?"
Not long after the crow cried out, Anna blocked their path.
The dwarf glared fiercely at Anna, revealing the gun at her waist, as if warning Anna not to interfere.
The singing from her mouth still hadn't stopped. Maintaining this special ability seemed to require continuous singing.
"Where are you from? If you don't tell me, I'll kill you."
Anna drew the blade at her waist. The Scythe of Harvest wasn't convenient to carry around;
it was usually kept in Scarlett's Life Thief space.
Even though Anna had drawn her blade, the dwarf still didn't reply, intending to bypass Anna and continue forward.
"I'm asking you a question."
A flash of blade light, and one of the dwarf's ears was sliced off. Blood trickled down her cheek.
Her voice trembled slightly, but the singing still didn't stop. Simultaneously, the dwarf also raised her gun.
"Feeling that confident?"
Before she could pull the trigger, Anna slashed again. This time, the dwarf's finger and the gun fell to the ground together.
Anna didn't go for the kill. Keeping her alive was more useful. When Loren arrived, they could interrogate her for more information.
Even having her hand cut off didn't stop her singing, but the fear effect of the Requiem wasn't something willpower could resist.
Just as Anna was considering whether to cut off her feet, Loren appeared, and the crow landed on Loren's shoulder.
