Chapter 133: The Wandering Soul in the Mist
Chapter 133: The Wandering Soul in the Mist
"Mara ran into trouble so quickly, I thought it would take a bit longer."
Loren walked out of the cabin unhurriedly. Since they had already arrived here, Mara's usefulness was not that great anymore. Loren just needed to ensure he could seize control of the ghost ship;
otherwise, getting back would be very troublesome.
However, it wasn't impossible. The simplest way was for Loren to tame a sufficiently large fish, or directly pray to the Orthodox Gods and have the Church send a ship to pick him up.
"What happened?"
As soon as Loren stepped out of the cabin, he saw that Mara was already missing an arm. That arm looked as if it had been eaten by something.
And right in front of her, there was a figure hidden in the mist, hunched over like an old man.
Even with Loren standing so close to it, it still appeared only as a silhouette, utterly impossible to make out what exactly it was.
"Master Mentor, just now my harpoon went straight through its body. When I attacked with my hand, my hand ended up like this."
Mara gave Loren the briefest summary of the situation. Seeing Loren, she seemed to have spotted her savior.
"Attacks are useless. This isn't an undead. It's an Anomaly, Anomaly 2-137, the Mist Wandering Soul."It has no physical form. It hides within the mist and can also spread mist. Any attack is ineffective against it, yet it can devour anything it touches."
"Isn't that invincible?"
Mara felt a wave of despair. She took out a rope and roughly tied off her severed arm, using this method to stop the bleeding.
"Most Anomalies cannot be destroyed, so you can only deal with them by exploiting their rules.
"For example, the Mist Wandering Soul does not actively attack others, and it is dispersed by light."
Loren took out his flint wheel lighter, lit a flame, and gradually approached the Mist Wandering Soul. Upon contact with the light, the humanoid silhouette in the mist would also disappear.
"It hasn't truly vanished;
it has just moved elsewhere.
"The '2' in the number prefix indicates it can endanger multiple people's lives. However, as long as you understand the rules, Anomalies aren't that dangerous."
The classification of Anomalies was simple, divided into levels 0 to 4.
Level 4 represented no danger. Level 3 meant it could endanger an individual. Level 2 meant it could endanger multiple people. Level 1 Anomalies could endanger the vast majority of people, even kill everyone.
And the top-tier Level 0 Anomalies, at a minimum, could destroy human civilization, with no upper limit.
"Is that so..."
Mara felt fortunate once again that coming with Loren was truly the right choice. Without Loren, she wouldn't even get past this hurdle with the Mist Wandering Soul.
"We're here."
Loren looked ahead, where the outline of an island was already vaguely visible. He could see the crimson sandy beach. Because there was no mist on the island, moonlight could shine down.
"Let's hurry and go ashore!"
Seeing that the treasure she had sought for so long was finally within reach, Mara appeared extremely excited, wishing she could charge onto the beach right now.
"Slow down."
Loren promptly pulled her back. In this world, places illuminated by moonlight were actually safer than places completely devoid of light.
"The place hiding the secret treasure will only appear at the moment of dawn. Going ashore now will only attract the attention of the monsters on the island. We'll go ashore tomorrow.
"Although there are monsters in the sea, under the protection of the ghost ship, we aren't in much danger."
"Understood, Master Mentor."
Suppressing the joy in her heart, Mara decided to follow Loren's instructions. Throughout this journey, Loren had proven himself correct more than once.
After returning to the cabin, Loren had Scarlett take out several alarm clocks. This was the benefit of having a personal storage space.
"Rest well today. Prepare for battle tomorrow.
"Due to the mechanisms left by the Dawn Princess, many sensitive Monsters can sense the abundant magic power here, so quite a few Monsters have gathered on the island. Be careful.
"On the other hand, don't worry about the mechanisms. The Dawn Princess wouldn't harm us, as long as we aren't too greedy."
After briefly explaining the situation, Loren lay down on the bed. His sleep quality was never great, so he could only try to sleep early.
"Mirrorheart, remember to wake me up tomorrow morning."
"Yes, Master."
As Loren turned off the lamp, Mirrorheart quietly turned off the alarm clocks as well.
Loren was completely unaware of this. He knew Mirrorheart very well, knowing she was extremely punctual. Besides, even if the alarm clocks broke and Mirrorheart overslept, Mara would come to wake him.
Tomorrow, she would obtain the secret treasure she had yearned for for decades and finally achieve her revenge. Mara would probably be too excited to sleep tonight. She most likely didn't have something like an alarm clock. To wake up before dawn tomorrow, she would probably have to stay up all night.
Anna very consciously snuggled into Loren's arms, holding him tightly.
Before sleeping, Loren used the Code of Justice once again, so the night remained very peaceful, with nothing else to report.
The next day's alarm clocks did not ring as scheduled, but Loren was still awakened by Mirrorheart.
"Good morning, Master."
This kind of thing had happened countless times before. Loren had long been at peace with it. But this time, Anna was still lying on top of him, her legs encased in velvet tights even wrapped around his waist.
So Mirrorheart's actions this time were extremely cautious and careful. Loren was also afraid of waking Anna and didn't dare move recklessly, letting Mirrorheart proceed on her own.
After finishing, Mirrorheart showed Loren her perfectly clean mouth before formally starting to wake everyone up. Taking advantage of Anna's grogginess just after waking, Loren quickly straightened his clothes.
"Hurry up and eat breakfast. We need to start moving soon."
Loren propped up the dazed Scarlett. Scarlett was also a heavy sleeper, often waking up even later than Loren most of the time. Waking up this early for the first time, she was still a bit unaccustomed to it, but she forced herself to stay awake and took out breakfast from her storage space.
"Mirrorheart, why aren't you eating?"
Only after finishing three boxes of rice did Anna realize Mirrorheart hadn't eaten.
"I woke up very early and have already eaten."
Anna glanced at Scarlett. Scarlett had just woken up, and all their food was in Scarlett's space, yet Mirrorheart said she had already eaten.
So Anna looked at Loren, revealing an "I understand everything" smile that made Loren feel extremely uncomfortable. He could only bury his head in his meal.
"You've worked hard, Mirrorheart...
"Master Mentor, I still think Mirrorheart is too overworked by herself. Scarlett isn't much help either. We should hire another maid."
Naclis had her own little scheme. She had also noticed that Mirrorheart and Loren were excessively intimate. To prevent her own position from being threatened, she decided to ask Loren to hire a few more maids.
She thought if there were more maids, perhaps Loren wouldn't spend so much energy on Mirrorheart.
However, Naclis understood very clearly that Mirrorheart's position was irreplaceable. Although she was a maid, she had long been integrated into this family. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say Anna was raised by Mirrorheart, and Naclis had also received a lot of care from her.
