Chapter 789: Ling Qingyu's arrangement
Chapter 789: Ling Qingyu's arrangement
"How's he then?" Ling Qingyu cut her friend off, fearing her emotions would get out of control.
"We don't know. The last time, the doctor said the critical period is over. Whether he wakes up remains to be seen," Kate shook her head as she answered.
The senior police officer who was Ryan's partner sighed at the side. He still couldn't shake off the guilt from his inaction and panic at the moment Ryan needed him.
This young man, who hadn't experienced much in life, might not be able to wake up anymore. This was pure torture.
Now, he didn't dare imagine how he would face Ryan's family members. His superior had already ordered someone to pick them up.
Although the force would compensate Ryan, would it be enough to sustain his family and cover the required medical care?
Perhaps it might work out for a few years, but afterward? Who knew? Who could sustain such outrageous treatment and care?
"Are you worried about the finances?" Kate asked the officer. "Fret not, I will take care of this kid. After all, he has slept with me once, so we should be familiar, right, Qingyu?"
Ling Qingyu rolled her eyes and cursed inwardly at Kate's reasoning. "How would I know about your relationship? I wasn't there."
"Anyway, he's serving to protect the public. Isn't it quite a shame for a hero to suffer misfortune?" Kate said.
Hearing her words, the police officer's previously saddened mood disappeared. He almost envied Ryan for his luck in gaining a wealthy woman's favor—and a beautiful damsel at that.
He didn't know the details of Kate's identity, but being able to easily afford Ryan's medical care for a lifetime already meant something. Even insurance and compensation could merely cover five years, unless the hospital waived Ryan's placement.
"Kate, are you sure you want to support him for a lifetime? A stranger at that?" Ling Qingyu asked, her expression strange.
"Hey, what's with that face? I'm not cruel enough to leave a life hanging. At least we're familiar, right? Just consider it fate that we met again," Kate sighed.
Ling Qingyu hadn't been able to discern it clearly during the emergency, but now she noticed that Kate had a slight positive feeling toward the man.
As for shipping them together, she didn't dare think too far—she had been taught lessons to the brink of puking by Kate.
"That's his greatest luck, to have met you," Ling Qingyu smiled. "In fact, rather than letting him coop up here, why don't we move him to my private medical island? I'll cover all expenses and have him treated under experts."
"Medical island?"
Ling Qingyu explained her properties in detail, and Kate gasped, citing the difference in wealth and class even if she was rich right now.
At the same time, she agreed since the level of professionals and equipment provided by her friend made a huge difference.
There wasn't a need to refuse. Of course, the patient's family's approval was needed to proceed. Apart from one night, Kate had no further say to dictate and move Ryan directly.
She could do that without any worries, but morally, it was a question of right and wrong—a vulnerable point for others, especially her competitors, to attack.
"We will need his family's word," said Kate.
"That's natural." Ling Qingyu nodded. "But I will inform my island to pick him up regardless with a private jet. The decision is yours to make."
"Private jet?"
"An air ambulance to transport the patient. All facilities provided. Even surgery on the plane is possible," Ling Qingyu shrugged.
"Filthy capitalist."
"Likewise, Kate. Likewise."
Very soon, a few more officers familiar with the patient appeared. Knowing it wasn't good to stay any longer, Ling Qingyu asked, "Are you going to stay here?"
"No," Kate shook her head. "You're not going to leave me alone, are you?"
"Of course not. We'll continue our journey. Hopefully, no more side missions appear," Ling Qingyu joked.
"What about those blood stains? I'm surprised you feel totally nothing. Even I'm a bit paranoid—I washed my hands several times and even tried to rub them off on my clothes," Kate said.
Ling Qingyu noticed the stains against her beautiful attire and smiled. That little blood was just fluid from human anatomy. She didn't need to fear it or hold some superstitious apprehension toward it.
"Well, I'll just destroy the clothes and wear something new."
"Right, how did my brain suddenly become so small? Let's burn mine too," Kate realized. "Also, don't forget your bulletproof attire for me."
Perhaps the event tonight had shaken her slightly to the core, making her forget that she didn't need to concern herself too much with bloodstains.
After leaving her contact number with the officer partnered with the patient, Kate left together with Ling Qingyu.
The latter sent the former to the door and reminded Kate to start hiring bodyguards and not rely too much on public government assets.
"My dear Qingyu, can't you share some of your bodyguards? I believe they are much more formidable and professional than most," Kate complained.
"Hmph, forget about them. They are mine. I don't want my poor girls copying your philanthropic lifestyle."
"That hurts, Qingyu."
"Go away and sleep, pretentious woman."
After saying goodbye, Ling Qingyu considered Kate's opinion. Since her guards would probably be stationed here for the long term, with deployments in and out every few months or so, tasking them further with protecting Kate was easy.
Yes, you heard her correctly. Deployment to Country A.
With her relationship with the mayor—and more of the latter's patrons, whom she would surely meet soon—plus Athena's cheat, paperwork and documentation for the girls weren't hard at all. However, she should also lower her girls' visibility unless necessary.
Given Kate's regular movements and her influence, such a task was extremely difficult. In any case, she should arrange her protection properly since it wasn't going to cost much.
Plus, she could also order Athena to monitor Kate thoroughly and keep watch over the surrounding radius. It was really just a matter of words. Oh, her lovely Astrid was also included in the equation.
This woman with an outrageous background behaved so ordinarily. She had asked Athena and learned that Astrid had no protection, not even shadows.
She couldn't risk her friend, could she? Especially in a gun-blazing country.
Alas, she also needed to talk with the mayor about tonight's event. Although the officials helped her and understood her presence, it was necessary politeness to exchange favors.
A week later, Kate received two new female employees plus a twelve-man team. Speechless at the armada gifted by her friend, Kate could only accept and pay their salaries.
Though Ling Qingyu had already covered the expenses, since Kate would become a part of her empire soon, Kate had her principles.
Not to mention, her friend had already supported the bodyguard team's equipment. A few Spirit Fox operators were tasked with training the new team for an entire month, which Kate didn't know yet so far.
Even though their backgrounds and skills were enough for bodyguard missions. Specialized mission needed specialized trainings.
It wasn't arduous to find a training facility here. So, Ling Qingyu moved so fast that Kate couldn't adapt well at the beginning.
Talking with her new subordinates, Kate discovered that her two new female subordinates were of Southern Bush origin. They were former military veterans, seeking a better life than drying away in the corrupted lands of drugs and massacre.
In those homelands of despair, it was disheartening yet heroic to witness these two women able to stick to their core beliefs rather than being recruited by drug lords and cartels. That might also have been possible because Athena sought them out before they fell.
In any case, the two women had transformed completely from their past lives. In fact, they had been a little scared initially, even if they believed in their skills, worried about scammers when they couldn't contact the employer face-to-face.
Even the interview was merely a phone call, asking nonsensical questions and giving a test with all sorts of questions—enough to dazzle their minds.
As for why not men but women, it was to cater to Kate's gender. Moreover, there were only these two women, who retained their strong belief and hatred toward drugs, not money. In other words, they were the only cleanest candidates.
The other twelve men were in a similar situation, coming from a variety of countries from Alyssia.
Athena had filtered their backgrounds, possible psychological states, and moral beliefs. The latter was of utmost importance when Athena hired them after Ling Qingyu's approval.
Ling Qingyu praised her daughter's thoroughness without hesitation. She also didn't withhold equipment since these men and women would soon become members of Tang Ziyi's mercenary groups.
Meanwhile, Kate received another surprise. A former wealthy capitalist had fallen from a high-rise building in the middle of the night by accident.
The only so-called witness was an escort girl who had been asleep.
Some bloggers even joked and warned people to be careful with their balance after going through tiresome exercises.
Although the police were still investigating, with suspicions of assassination because of the victim's identity, they had mostly ruled out that assumption.
