Chapter 2248 - 2224: On-Site Reconnaissance
Chapter 2248 - 2224: On-Site Reconnaissance
Gao Yang, Cui Bo, and Phoenix were walking on Sword Beach, just like ordinary tourists.
There wasn’t much time left until the memorial ceremony, and people had already started preparing the structures on the beach. For instance, a temporary viewing platform was under construction, and three stands for placing large screens were also being installed. Most importantly, on the side of the main stage on the sand, workers were building a fortification.
The fortification was certainly not made of reinforced concrete. Tourists were prohibited from approaching the construction site. The material used to build the beach fortifications was unknown from a distance, but it was undoubtedly lightweight, since two people could move a large piece of it.
The three fortifications were arranged in a triangular formation, with a large pile of anti-landing combat caltrops on the front side of the beach. Presumably, these caltrops and other anti-landing obstacles would be placed on the beach before the memorial ceremony performance began.
Walking slowly, Gao Yang said in a low voice, "We can confirm the area for the reenactment of the war. The nearest point is about four hundred and twenty meters from the viewing platform, and the farthest point is one thousand meters away."
Cui Bo said in a low voice, "It’s definitely the Allied Forces landing together; they can’t do the performance in two places. The bunkers can’t shoot, acting as the German Army doesn’t work. We can only pretend to be the Allied Forces, launch a frontal landing assault, and shoot after getting close."
Whether it’s a real fortification or a war reenactment, the bunker that’s only capable of passive defense would have shooting holes facing the direction from which the attack might come. Hence, the fortifications being installed on the beach had only a small door at the back.
Gao Yang nodded but then said, "The German positions are side-backed to the audience. The direction of the Allied Forces is more advantageous, but there’s a problem. The landing site of the Allied Forces is about one thousand two hundred meters from the viewing platform, and at its closest, it’s still over six hundred meters. With our available rifles, six hundred meters is somewhat unreliable."
After saying this, Gao Yang nodded toward the direction of a fortress and said, "It’s different there, the distance to the audience is about four hundred meters. Our rifles can guarantee accuracy, and inside the fort, even unusual actions won’t be seen by the audience or the security personnel. So, that fort is the most important firing point."
Phoenix was always reticent, so Gao Yang and Cui Bo talked without restraint. If not necessary, Phoenix wouldn’t interrupt, but this time, Phoenix suddenly raised his hand and said in a low voice, "The wind has picked up."
Gao Yang exhaled and said, "The wind by the sea is strong and fluctuates; it’s really annoying."
Cui Bo reached out to feel the strength of the wind and said in a low voice, "It’s weakened again and shifted direction a bit. The wind is unpredictable, fluctuating and shifting; it’s not favorable at all."
No sniper, no matter how skilled, can ignore the impact of weather conditions.
Phoenix said in a low voice, "The fortification shooting is crosswind, and the sea landing shooting is generally downwind, favoring the Allied Forces."
This means the angle for the Allied Forces’ shooting is better, allowing them to observe the audience continually and shoot when needed, with the help of the wind.
Playing the German Army in a fort, the advantage is the close range, making any unusual activities less noticeable. However, it’s inconvenient for observation because if one focuses on observing the audience in the back with binoculars instead of the enemy in the front, it would be obviously unusual, and there won’t be just one person inside the fort.
Gao Yang pondered for a moment and said, "We need meteorological data from here, mainly wind speed and direction."
Phoenix said in a low voice, "I’ll collect and organize it."
If they were to assassinate Mario, they’d only get one shot. If it hits, nothing more needs to be said. If it misses, no matter if it accidentally hits someone nearby, it would be discovered. Given the security during the memorial ceremony, getting a second shot is almost impossible. Even if there were a chance for a second shot, hitting Mario would be absolutely impossible.
Thus, every detail must be perfect. Trying one’s best isn’t enough; it must be perfect, only perfect.
It’s very necessary to collect and sort meteorological data in advance because the weather forecast issued by the meteorological station is meaningless for sniper operations. For instance, during the shooting time, the wind speed, wind direction, and whether there will be sudden changes in direction are factors that have the greatest impact on the bullet’s flight and must be given the utmost attention.
The three continued forward, leaving the construction zone on the beach. They walked onto the sand, taking a few steps, then running a few steps, feeling how soft the sand was and how much it would affect their movement. Gao Yang and Cui Bo even pretended to play-fight, falling to the sand, getting up again, and throwing sand with their hands, observing the coarseness of the sand and how long it took for the dust to settle.
The main purpose of this was to test whether, after prone firing, the muzzle flame would stir up dust and how thickly the dust would rise.
After some play-fighting, Cui Bo sat on the ground and said, "No problem, the sand here is different from the desert, it’s coarser, and there won’t be a lot of dust flying around for long. Firing on the beach shouldn’t be a big problem."
Gao Yang looked at his watch and said, "We’re done with the preliminary onsite inspection for now. Let’s head back and check again when we return from America."
As they headed back, passing once more by the area where the simulated fortifications were being constructed, Gao Yang suddenly said, "There will be a segment with veterans parachuting in, right? If I’m not mistaken, it’s a reenactment of the actions of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. Therefore, the parachute location will definitely be behind the fortress. To make the performance look more realistic, it would be normal for the soldiers in the fort to shoot backward."
Phoenix said, "Yes."
Cui Bo thought for a moment and said, "That seems correct."
A lot of people were curiously watching the fortifications and such, so standing there to watch didn’t seem unusual. After observing for a while, Gao Yang pointed at the fort and said in a low voice, "We must place a person inside this fort; let’s settle on this."
Having made up their minds, the three began to leave. As they walked, Gao Yang took out his phone and called Eileen. Once Eileen answered, Gao Yang said in a low voice, "We need to insert someone into the German Army Guards. Check how it might be done. If you don’t know where to start, let Yake help you. It’s important, so act quickly."
Eileen said in a low voice, "Understood, I’ll handle it right away. However, I think we won’t be able to get any help from my father. I can’t even bring it up; arousing his suspicion is out of the question."
Gao Yang said in a low voice, "I know, so don’t ask your father for help. I didn’t mean that. You’re German, so you helping Yake will make some things easier, that’s all."
Eileen exhaled and said, "Understood. How are things progressing on your side?"
Gao Yang smiled and said, "So far, everything is going smoothly, but it’s only the preparations that are going smoothly. Alright, we have a plane to catch; we’ll be in touch later."
