Chapter 99

Chapter 99

"Let go of me!"

Half of Yan Huan's body still hung off the infirmary bed, his toes scrabbling for purchase on the floor in a precarious balancing act. Spencer, curled up on top of him, only tightened her grip, making the situation twice as awkward.

After a token struggle, he felt her register his desire to leave. Instead of cooperating, she clung harder and yelled, "Medicine!"

Her face flushed scarlet; a single tear soaked through his T-shirt. From this angle he could see the soft, slightly squished curve of her cheek pressed against his chest.

"Sss..."

An anaconda-style squeeze stole his breath; his own face reddened. He patted the mattress, surrendering. The moment he went still, Spencer loosened, leaving him speechless.

"Mmm. As the school physician, I'd call this peak physical condition."

While Yan Huan caught his breath, Ye Lina rolled a stool over and sat down to watch the show. He turned toward her, exasperated.

"Teacher Ye Lina, what are you even talking about?"

"Just an observation. Don't mind me."

She smiled, studying Spencer in Yan Huan's arms. "So, what happened?"

He glanced at the pouting girl glued to his torso. "Search me. I bumped into her in the club building. She looked sick, so I brought her here—figured you'd either call her family or an ambulance."

"No ambulance needed. She's fine—well, mostly."

Yan Huan shot her a skeptical look. Every other visit to the infirmary, Ye Lina's only prescription was "go home," delivered with a side of wildly inappropriate jokes.

Without comment, she rolled her chair to the desk, picked up a brass plaque, and flashed it at him:

"Senior Honorary Physician, Saint Rhine Hospital — Ye Lina Ivanovna Sokolova."

Yan Huan blinked at the blonde doctor. "..."

Under his stare, Ye Lina's gaze slid away; she raised her hands in mock defeat. "Fine. She's wearing the new Jinshi Group biometric band. If it hasn't turned red, it's not serious."

He looked down. A translucent, high-tech ring encircled Spencer's left wrist. Right now it glowed warning yellow, with jagged lines pulsing across the display:

Unknown anomaly detected. Alert sent.

"That thing debuted at the Eagle Kingdom Tech Expo, didn't it? Six figures easy, and here it is on her wrist like a toy?"

Ye Lina tucked the plaque back into her coat. "Do you know who you're holding?"

"Sure—the rich kid's daughter."

"Correction: the richest rich kid's only daughter."

She chuckled, pointing at Spencer. "Board-chairman's precious heiress of the Jinshi Group, the 'Black Gold' clan. Principal Hermes may love money, but he still has standards—until the offer is literally too big to refuse and the family too powerful to offend."

The Jinshi Energy Conglomerate—oil tycoons across the ocean. Their founding family is nicknamed the Golden Lions or the Black-Gold Family. Their empire spans banking, entertainment, tech; Linmen itself was their shrewdest investment. That's why the city's heart boasts a towering skyscraper crowned with a golden lion emblem.

Yan Huan stared at Ye Lina, then at Spencer snuggled against him. None of which explained why the girl was an outright airhead.

Spencer lay still, eyes blank. He tried again.

"Spencer?"

She lifted her head a fraction, looked at him—and beamed a dopey, guileless smile.

"Mama~"

Yan Huan looked like he'd swallowed a fly; he averted his gaze to avoid the IQ-draining aura. Turning to Ye Lina, he asked,

"So why ship the crown jewel across the ocean instead of keeping her under lock and key in Eagle Country?"

"Search me. Ordinary people can't even get an audience, let alone family gossip."

Ye Lina reached out and playfully patted Spencer's cheek—smack. Spencer snapped like a puppy; Ye Lina yanked her hand back just in time.

"Ow!"

"Rare chance to pat the princess of Black Gold. Want a turn? Feels nice."

Spencer, having missed, tucked her head into Yan Huan's chest and glared at Ye Lina.

"...I hate chu!"

"Aww, even rich girls are adorable when mad~"

Ye Lina beamed; Yan Huan did not. Something about the way she'd handled Spencer felt... rough? Ye Lina loved risqué jokes, but she'd never outright smack a sick student.

A chill crawled up his spine as he remembered—he, with his usual self-control, had lost his temper earlier and swatted Spencer's back. Was that the Modifier's side-effect? A subtle loathing that crept in unnoticed?

He forced himself to look at Spencer again. The revulsion faded; in its place he saw only the desperate need in her eyes as she burrowed into him.

He shifted, shielding her from Ye Lina's idle hand, then asked,

"Can you explain why she thinks I'm her mom?"

Ye Lina tapped her chin, thinking aloud.

"President Yan, do you know what separates humans from animals? The brain. Disease or emotion can swing intelligence up or down. Right now her already-limited IQ has gone completely offline. She's operating on instinct—utterly unpredictable."

She raised a finger in conclusion.

"I call it 'Super-Dummy Mode'."

Yan Huan raised an eyebrow, dissatisfied but unable to refute it.

Ding-ding-ding~

Ye Lina's phone rang. She fished it out and answered.

"Package pickup at the commercial-street gate, got it. I'll be right there."

With that she hung up, stood, slipped off her white coat, and told Yan Huan,

"In this state she's lost basic reasoning and her memories get scrambled. She'll also, for some mysterious reason, feel both fond of you and completely convinced you're her mother.

"And no matter what you do, she won't remember a thing—she'll just obey you sweetly."

Ye Lina hung the coat on a peg, then suddenly changed tack.

"Ah, what rotten timing, Yan. I've got to head all the way to the commercial-street gate for a parcel, and I might stop for dessert while I'm there.

"Could be ages before I'm back. So I'll leave this empty infirmary—bed, sheets, lube, and no chance of visitors—to your capable hands."

Yan Huan watched in disbelief as she fished contraceptives from a cabinet and set them on the table, then turned to deliver a final warning.

"Hey, Linmen Education Bureau? I want to file a complaint—Yuanyue has a pervert nurse."

Ye Lina didn't flinch; she simply picked up her phone and walked out.

"Bye-bye, Yan kiddo~"

"So that bracelet already alerted Golden Lion Group and they're on their way?"

"Clever boy. You know why I hate smart kids?"

Pausing at the door, she sighed, answered herself,

"Because they're no fun to trick."

"Still, it'll be a while before the cavalry arrives. Make yourselves comfortable, President Yan~"

Click.

The door shut, leaving Yan Huan and Spencer alone.

He drew the curtain with a resigned tug and looked down at her.

With the nurse gone, Spencer finally dared to lift her head from his chest and gave a soft huff.

Then she turned those clear blue eyes on him.

Golden waves spilled over his stomach like sunlight on water.

They studied each other in silence until, just when Yan Huan thought she might recognize he wasn't her mother, she beamed.

"Mama~"

He exhaled, held her gaze, and slowly extended a hand—half apology for earlier, half fishing for information.

Before he could speak she ducked her head, pressing it into his palm, and rubbed against it like a kitten.

"Hehe~"

He looked away, gathering his thoughts.

"Spencer... you don't want to leave Mama, do you?"

"No."

She burrowed into his arms again, fingers clutching his shirt.

"Then why did Mama send you here by yourself?"

Silence.

He knew she wasn't asleep.

"I don't know. I keep asking why Mama left me alone here."

She didn't have the answer.

She went on, voice small,

"I hate Linmen. I hate school. Everyone's fake; they look down on anyone weaker and love to bully them.

"I hate them."

She bit her lip, then added miserably,

"Only the AI keeps me company, but it doesn't understand anything. Every time I asked it to call you it said you were resting and wouldn't pick up. Liar."

Yan Huan blinked.

Kid... it's called time zones.

After a moment he asked,

"So you haven't made any friends?"

"One."

Spencer nodded, brightening.

"An Le. I'm helping her steal that awful Yan Huan away from the other girls!"

Yan Huan's face darkened; he pinched her cheek lightly.

She only giggled, swaying her head with his hand.

"Hehe~"

"Dummy."

"I-I'm not dumb! Not dumb..."

For the first time she protested, cheeks puffed in indignation.

Even Mama couldn't call her stupid.

But her mention of "helping An Le steal me" reminded him of the lunchtime study group.

So that's why she'd been so loud—distracting Sakuramiya and Bai Yi while An Le cornered him.

Was it An Le's idea or Spencer's?

"An Le's stingy—she fussed over one bottle of water I gave her, like it was gold. But she's my friend, so..."

Yan Huan caught the key word.

Water.

The bottle An Le had hugged to her chest—the one he'd meant to drink, then didn't because Spencer made a scene. Later he'd seen An Le sip from the same mouthpiece while Sakuramiya watched.

Given their friendship, Spencer shouldn't have cared—unless the water wasn't ordinary.

He replayed Spencer's earlier symptoms: flushed skin, feverish daze, docility.

Click.

Wait.

If An Le asked Spencer to help "steal" him, and Spencer drank An Le's water, and now she's glassy-eyed and pliant...

He mentally slotted three pieces together:

"Spencer distracts Bai Yi and Sakuramiya while An Le corners me with the water."

"Spencer drinks An Le's water."

"Spencer is now red-cheeked and foggy."

An Le has a Modifier. What had she planned?

A chill crawled up his spine.

He swallowed, refusing to believe it.

An Le's timid, easily swayed, but not malicious.

Besides, he'd grabbed that bottle himself; she never told him to drink it.

Probably just a misunderstanding.

He shook the suspicion away and focused on Spencer.

"Spencer, why do you like taking things from others?"

She tilted her head, thinking hard.

"Because those birds have everything—pretty feathers, bright colors. They flock together in castles above the clouds."

Yan Huan's brow twitched. Delirious rambling.

Yet her background clicked into place: an only child from a prominent Eagle Country family, exiled to Linmen, cared for by an AI.

Rich kids' lives were weird.

"Mama... sleepy."

After the barrage of questions she yawned wide, rubbed her eyes, and mumbled drowsily.

"Then you."

"I want you to sleep with me."

"......"

I'm going to record this. When your family shows up and finds us in bed, I'll play it out loud before they silence me!

"Say it again—wait, I'm recording."

Yan Huan's face darkened. Just to be safe, he pulled out his phone.

Before he could open the recorder, she leaned down and slipped her arms around his neck.

Her whole body pressed against his, one-to-one.

His pupils narrowed as he stared into Spencer's open eyes, only centimeters away.

No makeup, yet her skin was pale and smooth—someone's family clearly spared nothing for skincare.

Only her gaze remained untouched by anything, crystal clear.

She stared straight at him, long lashes fluttering over curved brows.

Then she spoke.

"...like."

Yan Huan blinked, still forming a reply—

When hurried footsteps echoed outside.

His face changed. "Whatever happens, not a sound!"

He yanked the curtain shut, hiding them completely, and pulled his feet onto the bed to see who was coming.

"Mm."

Spencer had already buried her head against his neck, frozen.

Click—

"Teacher Ye Lina! Are you in?!"

The door swung open and An Le's anxious voice spilled in.

An Le?

Yan Huan, still holding Spencer, exhaled in relief.

Thank heavens it wasn't the Golden Lion Group.

If the loaded-kid had caught him without a recording, he'd be erased on the spot.

He started to lift his head—then froze at An Le's frantic mutter beyond the curtain.

"It's my fault... if I hadn't slipped Xiao Huan that spring potion, Spencer wouldn't have drunk it by mistake... it's all me..."

Behind the curtain, Yan Huan went rigid, staring at the fabric in disbelief before flattening himself back down.

"It's all my fault... all my fault..."

"Click-click-click—"

At the bedside, Meow-chan shimmered into view, tail swishing.

"An Le's Modifier is about to pop a fragment, meow!"

Yan Huan pressed his lips together and sighed inwardly at the mascot.

"She over-thinks everything. I still don't know why the Modifier picked her. One harsh word—like what I tossed at Ye Shiyu—and she drowns in guilt."

"That's how it is, meow. Anyway, new fragment incoming."

Meow-chan leaned forward, tail flicking in anticipation—then froze.

Click... click...

The fragment-drop sound cut off mid-series, leaving the cat statue-still.

What the—meow?

The process can just... stop?!

In the sudden silence, An Le's breathy voice returned.

"It's not my fault, but... still... I should contact Spencer's family first."

Not your fault now, meow?!

Meow-chan was horrified; she'd never imagined the fragment drop could be paused.

Yan Huan hadn't expected An Le's sudden change either.

He frowned toward the curtain, trying to see through it to the childhood friend who suddenly felt unfamiliar.

"I'll wait here for Teacher Ye Lina. She'll have Spencer's contact info."

"......"

Listening, Yan Huan's breathing grew shallow.

But the blonde in his arms—Spencer—stirred at An Le's voice.

Her awareness was hazy, yet her golden hair flared brighter.

Two phantom, horn-like antennae sprouted above her head.

An invisible wave rippled out, washing over the room.

"......"

She shifted, half-asleep, and—driven by instinct—pressed a hand to Yan Huan's lower abdomen.

"!!"

His eyes flew open; he stared down at her in alarm.

Eyes still closed, unconscious, her body moved on its own, deliberately provoking him.

Trying to force a reaction that would alert An Le only meters away.

Seriously?! Even unconscious she can Plunder?!

He started to push her away—then saw her lips part, throat working as if to speak.

"!!"

No—any sound now and—

He froze, holding his breath.

Sensing his surrender, Super-Dumb-Mode Spencer smiled in satisfaction and slid her hand higher, shamelessly tracing the firmer lines of Yan Huan's newly toned muscles.

Now, with two fresh points in procreation attributes, he had to endure temptation in silence while his childhood friend sat three meters away.

"......"

In the hush, An Le—still at the desk—blushed at the contraceptives Ye Lina had left out.

But guilt crashed over her again: the reckless mistake she'd made at noon.

I really can't win Xiao Huan this way.

Too despicable.

I should move him with sincerity and courage.

After all, what we have—what we should have—is pure love~

Unbeknownst to her, just behind the curtain, the air had turned thick.

No sincerity, no courage.

Only raw numbers, primal desire.

Only impure defilement.
