Mate Me in Moonlight

Chapter 80

Chapter 80

POV: Adeline

We woke to wolves on every border.

The scouts came in just before dawn, their reports arriving in rapid succession—north, south, east, west. Every direction telling the same story.

Ironclaw had arrived in full force.

I stood on the packhouse steps beside Aiden, watching the perimeter reports materialize on the map spread across the outdoor table. Luca marked each sighting with grim efficiency. The markers multiplied until the map looked diseased, Ironclaw's positions surrounding Willow Ridge like a tightening noose.

"Thousands," Marcus said quietly. "We're looking at thousands."

Not hundreds. Thousands.

More wolves than I had ever seen gathered in one place. More than Ash Hollow had held at its peak. More than should have been possible for a single pack to command.

But Ronan had been building for years. Absorbing smaller packs. Taking in exiles and outcasts who had nowhere else to go. Breeding a generation of wolves raised on nothing but loyalty to him.

This was the result.

"The eastern flank has the densest concentration," Luca reported, his finger tracing the cluster of markers. "Easily six hundred wolves in visual range. The west is thinner—maybe three hundred—but they've positioned their strongest fighters there."

"The north?"

"Five hundred, spread in a wide arc. They're not trying to hide. They want us to see how many they have."

Psychological warfare. Make us feel surrounded, overwhelmed, hopeless.

It was working.

Around the table, I could see the effect on the gathered wolves. Faces that had held determination now showed cracks of fear. Shoulders that had been straight began to curve inward. Even Freya, standing at my left, had gone pale.

"Any sign of reinforcements on our side?" someone asked.

Luca shook his head. "The other packs are too far. Even if they came immediately—which they won't—they couldn't arrive in time to help. Ironclaw has positioned scouts on every approach. Anyone trying to reach us would have to fight through them first."

No reinforcements coming.

We were alone.

The silence stretched, heavy with the weight of that truth. Thousands of enemy wolves. Hundreds of our own. No help arriving. No way out.

For a terrible moment, I felt the old despair rising—that familiar certainty that everything I touched would eventually burn, that this pack would end the same way Ash Hollow had ended.

Then Aiden moved.

He stepped forward, and despite the wounds still healing beneath his clothes, despite the days of unconsciousness that had nearly claimed him, his presence filled the clearing. Alpha power rolled off him in waves—not the crushing force he used in battle, but something steadier. More certain.

"I know what you're thinking," he said, his voice carrying to every corner of the gathered crowd. "I can feel your fear through the pack bonds. I can smell it on the wind. And I won't lie to you—you have reason to be afraid."

He paused, letting that acknowledgment settle.

"We are outnumbered. We are surrounded. The enemy has committed everything they have to crushing us. They believe this is their final victory."

Another pause. His black eyes swept across the assembled wolves.

"They are wrong."

Something shifted in the crowd. Not hope, exactly—not yet. But attention. Engagement. Wolves leaning forward instead of shrinking back.

"We fight for our home." Aiden's voice gained strength with each word. "Not just this territory, not just these cabins—but everything they represent. Every memory shared around our fires. Every pup born in our dens. Every bond forged through hunt and celebration and quiet moments between wolves who chose to run together."

He turned in a slow circle, meeting eyes in every direction.

"We fight for each other. For the wolves beside us and behind us. For the ones who have already fallen and the ones who will fight tomorrow. Ironclaw has numbers. They have strength. But they don't have what we have."

"What's that?" someone called out.

Aiden smiled—not his gentle smile, but the fierce one. The one that promised violence and victory.

"Something worth dying for."

A murmur ran through the crowd. I saw spines straightening. Jaws setting. Fear still present, but something else rising to meet it.

"We do not surrender," Aiden continued. "We do not negotiate. We do not bend. Ironclaw has chosen war, and we will give them one they'll remember for generations. We will make them bleed for every inch of our territory. We will teach them that Willow Ridge wolves do not break."

The murmur became a rumble. Voices rising in agreement. Fists clenching at sides.

"Today begins the siege." Aiden raised his voice to carry over the growing response. "Today they surround us. Today they think they've won. But today is also the day we show them exactly who they're dealing with."

He looked at me then—a glance so brief the crowd might not have noticed. But I saw what was in his eyes. Not uncertainty. Not fear.

Pride.

In me. In us. In what we would face together.

I stepped forward to stand at his side.

The crowd's energy shifted again as I moved. I felt their attention turn to me—Luna, even if the ritual hadn't been performed. Leader, even if I had never asked for the title. Someone they trusted to fight beside their Alpha.

Someone they trusted.

"Luna." The word rippled through the assembled wolves. Not spoken by one voice, but many. A title claimed by consensus.

Aiden's hand found mine.

"Together," he said quietly, for my ears alone.

"Together," I agreed.

We faced the crowd—Alpha and Luna, surrounded by enemies, outnumbered beyond hope. But we faced them together. And the pack faced with us.

The first horns sounded in the distance—Ironclaw, announcing the beginning of the siege.

We didn't flinch.

"To your positions," Aiden commanded. "The siege begins."

The pack moved. Organized. Determined. Ready.

And I stood beside my mate, watching our wolves prepare to defend everything we had built, knowing that whatever came next, we would face it side by side.

The siege had begun.

But we were far from finished.
