Mate Me in Moonlight

Chapter 145

Chapter 145

POV: Adeline

A formal gathering. The pack waiting.

I stand in our quarters, Hope wrapped in the soft white blanket Freya made for her, and try to calm my racing heart. This shouldn't be terrifying—these are our people, our pack, the wolves who have accepted me and fought beside me and bled to keep us safe. But holding Hope, looking at her tiny face peaceful in sleep, I'm struck by the weight of this moment.

This is her introduction. Her formal welcome. The beginning of her story with Willow Ridge.

"Ready?" Aiden asks, his hand warm on the small of my back.

"No." The word comes out honest, raw. "But let's do it anyway."

He smiles, understanding in every line of his face, and together we step out into the fading afternoon light.

The pack gathers in the central clearing, arranged in a loose semi-circle that faces the pack house. Everyone is here—warriors who guard our borders, families with children, elders who carry our history. Faces I've come to know over these months, people who have become family in ways I never expected.

Luca stands at attention, his Beta authority evident in every line of his stance. Freya hovers beside him, her eyes already red-rimmed, her hand pressed to her mouth. Elara watches from the side, satisfaction written in her expression. The rest of the pack waits in respectful silence, their attention fixed on us with an intensity that makes my skin prickle.

We walk forward. Aiden beside me, his presence steady and sure. Me carrying Hope, this tiny precious weight in my arms, this miracle we're about to share with the world.

The pack parts for us, creating a path to the center of the clearing. Each wolf we pass bows their head—not to me, but to Hope. Acknowledging her. Welcoming her. Promising their loyalty to this child who will one day lead them.

My throat tightens. I blink back tears because I need to see, need to witness every second of this.

We reach the center, turn to face the pack, and suddenly I'm looking at dozens of faces, all focused on the bundle in my arms. Hope shifts, makes a small sound, and somehow the pack seems to lean forward as one, drawn by the evidence of her existence.

Aiden's hand finds the small of my back again, anchoring me, and when he speaks his voice carries the weight of Alpha authority, of formal declaration, of pride so fierce it transforms him.

"Willow Ridge, meet Hope Hale." The words ring across the clearing, formal and absolute. "Your future."

For a heartbeat, silence. Total and complete, heavy with significance.

Then, as one, the pack bows.

Every wolf, every person, every member of our family drops into a formal bow of acknowledgment and respect. Heads lowered, backs curved, honoring this tiny person in my arms who doesn't even know yet what she means to them.

What she will mean.

I look at Aiden, see his throat working, see the emotion he's trying to contain, and I know he's feeling what I'm feeling—overwhelming gratitude that Hope will grow up surrounded by this. Protected by this. Loved by this.

The bows rise, and then—

A howl.

Luca's voice rises first, primal and joyful, breaking protocol but not caring, and the sound crashes over us like a wave. Then Freya's, higher and fierce. Then Elara's, surprisingly strong. Then every wolf in the clearing, every voice joining together in a chorus that echoes across the territory, that carries into the forest, that announces to the world that Willow Ridge has an heir.

Joy. Pure and undiluted, vibrating through the bond, through the air, through the very ground beneath us. The howls rise and fall, layer and interweave, create something beautiful and wild and exactly right.

Hope stirs in my arms, her eyes opening at the sound, and she doesn't cry. She just blinks, wide-eyed and solemn, as if she knows somehow that this is for her. That these voices are singing her welcome home.

The howls fade slowly, leaving behind ringing silence and the rustle of wind through the pines. I look around the clearing and see joy on every face, tears on many, smiles that reach deep.

Freya is crying openly now, not even trying to hide it, her hand still pressed to her mouth like she can hold back the emotion with sheer force of will. She steps forward, bows again just to Hope, and when she rises her voice cracks.

"Welcome, Hope. Your Aunt Freya promises you the world."

Luca stands rigid beside her, his jaw set, his eyes suspiciously bright. He's fighting it—refusing to cry, refusing to let emotion break his careful control—and losing spectacularly. A tear escapes, slides down his scarred cheek, and he brushes it away roughly.

"She's pack," he says, his voice gruff and fierce. "Anyone threatens her, they answer to me."

More tears. He refuses them. They come anyway.

Aiden's hand tightens on my back, and through the bond I feel his amusement, his affection for his Beta, his gratitude for the loyalty Luca shows without hesitation.

"Thank you," I manage, my own voice thick. "All of you. For welcoming her. For—" The words stick. "For being her family."

"She's already ours," someone calls from the back. "Same as you are."

The agreement ripples through the pack, voices murmuring assent, and something inside me that I didn't know was still locked opens completely. They don't just accept Hope because she's Aiden's daughter. They accept her because she's mine too. Because I'm pack.

Because we belong here.

Wolves begin to approach, forming a careful line, each wanting to see Hope up close, to witness this moment. They come one by one or in small family groups, murmuring greetings, offering blessings, touching her tiny hand with infinite gentleness.

An elder woman with silver hair smiles down at Hope, her eyes crinkling. "She has your strength in her. I see it already."

A young warrior, barely twenty, bows deeply. "I swear my blade to her. Now and always."

A mother with two small children lifts her daughter to see. "That's your future Alpha, sweetheart. Hope Hale."

The name passes through the crowd, repeated and savored, claimed by the pack as surely as we've claimed it. Hope. Their hope. Their future. Their proof that the pack will continue, will thrive, will endure.

Aiden watches it all with quiet pride, his arm around me now, holding us both close. I lean into him, let his strength support me, and together we witness Hope's first moments as part of something bigger than just our small family.

She is pack.

She is loved.

She is home.

The sun sets behind the mountains, painting the sky in shades of amber and rose and deep purple. The pack begins to disperse slowly, reluctantly, talking amongst themselves about Hope, about the future, about the joy of new life. But many linger, unwilling to let the moment end.

Freya appears at my elbow, her face still blotchy from crying. "Can I?" She gestures to Hope.

I pass my daughter to her carefully, watch as Freya's expression transforms into something soft and awed. "Hey, little one. It's me. Your favorite aunt."

"You're her only aunt," Luca points out.

"Irrelevant." Freya cradles Hope with surprising competence, swaying gently. "I'm still the favorite. And I'm going to teach you everything. How to throw a knife. How to fight dirty. How to reduce grown men to tears with a single look."

"Absolutely not," Aiden says, but he's smiling.

"Absolutely yes." Freya looks up at me, her eyes bright. "Thank you for her. For letting us be part of this."

"You are this," I tell her. "You're family. You've been family since the day I got here and you decided to tolerate my existence."

"I never just tolerated you." Her voice goes serious. "I loved you before I knew how to say it. Same as I love her." She looks down at Hope. "Same as we all do."

Luca reaches over, touches Hope's head with one scarred finger, his expression unguarded for once. "She's got good people around her. She'll be strong."

"She'll be loved," Aiden corrects. "That's what matters."

"That too." Luca straightens, his Alpha voice returning. "But she'll need strength. The world won't be gentle with her just because she's pack."

"Then we make sure she's ready." I look around the clearing, at the pack still gathered, still celebrating, still howling their joy into the darkening sky. "All of us. Together."

It's a promise. A vow. The same vow every parent makes but this one carries the weight of pack, of family, of belonging earned through trial and trauma and the stubborn refusal to give up on each other.

Hope yawns in Freya's arms, tiny and perfect, and the simple act makes everyone watching smile. Such a small thing. Such a normal thing. But after everything we've survived to get here, normalcy feels like victory.

"Time to get her inside," Elara says gently, appearing beside us. "She's had enough excitement for one day."

"We all have," I agree, taking Hope back, cradling her against my chest.

The pack parts for us again as we walk back toward the pack house, but this time they're not bowing. They're smiling. Calling out well-wishes. Reaching out to touch Hope's blanket or my arm or Aiden's shoulder. Claiming connection. Celebrating family.

Inside our quarters, the quiet feels profound after the noise of the gathering. Aiden closes the door behind us, and suddenly it's just the three of us again. Our small family in the peace of evening.

I settle into the rocking chair Luca built, Hope cradled in my arms, and Aiden sits on the floor beside us, his head resting against my knee. We don't speak. Don't need to. The bond hums between us, content and complete.

Hope's eyes drift closed, her breathing evening out into sleep, and I watch her in the dim light and think about everything she is. Everything she will be.

Hope Hale. Daughter of survivors. Born from ashes. Named for what she gives.

The pack's future. Our miracle. The proof that love wins.

She is pack. She is loved. She is home.

And so am I.
