Chapter 142: The Whole World Trembles, Nick Fury Sighs!
Chapter 142: The Whole World Trembles, Nick Fury Sighs!
"My master… has lost…"
"The Infinity Gauntlet… is gone…"
Fear spread like a plague among Thanos's army. Who first broke and howled in terror, no one knew, but it triggered a chain reaction like a landslide or tsunami. Tens of thousands of Chitauri and Outrider soldiers gave up all resistance, scattering in all directions like headless flies.
Their thinking was simple: if they could escape this battlefield and this demonic man, it would be worth it—no matter how slim the hope. But would Lucci grant them that chance? Leaving such a vast defeated force loose on Earth would spell the doom of civilization itself. Watching them panic and scatter, Lucci sent a thought-command via telepathy.
"Ancient One, close the net."
At that instant, four giant circular portals crackling with golden sparks opened without warning at the east, south, west, and north of the battlefield.
Thanos's fleeing army slammed directly into the sudden "walls" conjured from nowhere!
Immediately, through the portals, countless mages in yellow robes poured forth, their hands glowing with golden magical light. At their head was none other than the Ancient One herself!
"All who belong to Kamar-Taj, heed my command!" the Ancient One called, her voice cold and full of majesty. "Raise the Mirror Dimension barrier! Imprison all enemies, and let not a single one leave alive!"
"Yes, Supreme One!"
Thousands of mages answered in unison, waving their hands and launching golden lines of magic high into the sky. The threads wove together into a colossal, kaleidoscopic, semi-transparent dome, wrapping around the entire battlefield.
—Kamar-Taj joins the battle!
The Wakandans watched this scene in fresh shock. Yet another hidden force?! Prince Lucci never ceased to astound them.
But the true "surprise" was still to come.
As the mages appeared, an excited, childlike voice echoed over the battlefield:
"Finally, I can eat!"
With this shout, pure and frigid dark energy burst from above the battlefield. A shrunken Dormammu materialized, conjuring hundreds—thousands—of monstrous black tentacles, each bigger than a giant python, all composed of pure dark energy.
"Everything is mine!" Dormammu cackled, leering at the panicked monsters and alien soldiers below as if they were a delectable buffet. His shrieks rose, and the thousands of black tentacles snapped forward, moving at many times the speed of the fleeing creatures.
Whip!
One tentacle coiled tightly around a running beast, then yanked it back. Before the creature could even howl, it was dragged into the abyss behind Dormammu and devoured in an instant—no trace of energy left behind.
And then the same with the next, and the next, hundreds more. All across the field, Dormammu's ravenous tentacles feasted on the defeated creatures in an orgy of cosmic predation. The sight was terrifying—yet almost darkly funny. The once notorious monsters of the universe—now nothing but appetizers in the eyes of the mini-Dormammu.
Thanos watched all this in stunned silence. His final army cornered, the Lord of the Dark Dimension reduced to a "cleaner" under someone else's command... The heart that had beat with obsession and pain finally grew cold and still.
The tide had turned completely. There was no hope for reversal.
In Thanos's eyes flitted resentment, bitterness, confusion, but most of all—a strange relief, the peace of one who has accepted fate.
"You win," he said to Lucci, the arrogance and madness gone from his husky voice. "Quickly… grant me death."
Lucci simply looked at him, raising the Path Flame Sword. He said nothing, nor boasted in victory. For such a defeated tyrant, death was perhaps the final act of respect.
Swoosh!
Lightning flashed from the sword, slicing through the eternal night. Thanos's body froze. The massive, mad-eyed head rolled slowly from his shoulders, landed on the dirt, and finally stilled—face-down in the dust.
The headless, giant body collapsed with a plume of earth. The mad Titan, the Conqueror of the Universe—Thanos—was dead.
When Thanos fell, an eerie silence instantly blanketed the battlefield. All movement ceased. The survivors stared at the headless body, then at the bloodless victor gripping the sword—shock and disbelief overwhelming their faces.
Was it… truly over? Had it ended, just like that? Did Thanos… die that way?
…
Asgard, Rainbow Bridge.
Odin and Heimdall watched the finale through the All-Seeing Eye. After a long pause, Odin muttered in disbelief, "That was… Thanos…"
The being he'd once dreaded, beheaded by Lucci in front of all. After a breathless silence, the first cheers erupted from the Wakandan battlefield—and then an earth-shaking, world-wide roar!
"We won!"
"Victory! We did it!"
"Prince Lucci!"
The joy of survival and pride in triumph overflowed in a massive celebration. The once ferocious and brutal army, leader killed and Gauntlet lost, saw their morale blown out like a candle in the wind. With no orders, no oppressive presence, the alien butchers collapsed and scattered instantly.
"Kill them! For Earth! For our homeland!" Black Panther raised his Vibranium claws and led the charge. The Dora Milaje and Wakandan warriors were reinvigorated—what was once a desperate defensive line turned into a scythe, reaping the fleeing invaders.
Hulk caught retreating beasts and smashed them to the earth with delighted roars. Overhead, Iron Man Tony soared, watching the rout, and couldn't help but shout over the comms: "My god, I thought I'd be writing my will on this planet's graveyard… but Lucci actually did it!"
Captain America hurled his shield, splattering a would-be assassin, and said in a low voice to Wanda, "He did more than that. He's a god."
Mini-Dormammu clearly enjoyed his feast—his countless black tentacles twisted and snared fleeing prey, growing a little bigger with every meal. Ripples of dark energy sent uneasy shivers through all nearby—but no one dared stop him. This cruelty was a necessary purge of war.
In less than five minutes, apart from those swept into the sea for Atlantis's troops, every last member of Thanos's force on land was slaughtered by the Earth Alliance.
The battlefield quieted, leaving only the crowd's breathing and stifled excitement. The Ancient One stood atop a high hill, yellow cloak fluttering, bowed respectfully towards Lucci in the distance—then, with the mages she'd brought, quietly departed.
This transcendent, mysterious demeanor only deepened the awe and respect all present felt for Kamar-Taj.
At this moment, all eyes fixated on Lucci. Above in the sky, Sanctuary—Thanos's titanic flagship—still hovered, looming and threatening despite its master's death.
"What should we do about the warship?" Superman flew to Lucci, asking with interest. "It's too big. Destroying it would risk catastrophic debris on Earth."
Lucci gazed at the monstrous armored hull as if he could see through every layer. "Destroy it? What a waste." He smiled faintly, his soft voice carrying clearly throughout the field. "Even for Asgard, a ship of this caliber would be a prize worth winning."
With that, Lucci slowly lifted his palm, fingers slightly splayed, and an invisible, terrible force gathered at his fingertips—the power of cosmic law!
"Accept."
In that moment, space above Wakanda seemed to freeze. To everyone's shock, Sanctuary began to "fold"—yes, fold. Like crumpled paper, the warship's immense mass collapsed inward toward Lucci's hand in the span of seconds, until the enormous vessel had shrunk down to the size of a palm-sized model that dropped, weightlessly, into Lucci's hand.
He tossed the "model" casually away and stored it, then clapped his hands as if it was a mundane task.
Total silence.
The whole battlefield was suffocatingly quiet. Wakandan soldiers stared agape, nearly dropping their weapons; even their proud Vibranium technology seemed like mere pebbles to this mysterious prince.
The Avengers were similarly struck with dread. Tony Stark goggled; even JARVIS was confused. "Is that… technology? Or is it magic?" Tony whispered, his worldview as a genius crumbling. "Spatial compression? Higher dimensional folding? Are you kidding me?"
Black Panther and his sister Shuri were dumbfounded; Shuri, Wakanda's head scientist, stared at Lucci's hand and muttered, "Such a massive ship… just like that, it's… vanished? Packed away?"
Even Thor—a god—was utterly shocked. He'd always known Lucci was formidable, but the ease with which he captured Sanctuary chilled his blood. Even Thor would have to expend immense effort to destroy such a ship—but Lucci simply cleaned it up.
"Is this… the power of the universe?" Jean gazed up, eyes shining with awe. "So… enchanting."
Magneto, watching Lucci leave, took a deep breath and silently congratulated himself for picking Lucci's side early on. No resistance could stand before such an absolute master of space.
When Lucci had finished restoring order on the field, he ascended into the sky, his voice ringing clear to every corner of the world:
"The invaders are purged; the crisis is over."
That short sentence worked like a great anchor, instantly calming the panic and chaos gripping Earth. People who'd been despairing at Thanos's holoprojection were now pouring into the streets. From major cities to New York, London, and beyond, humanity thrilled at this miraculous reversal.
Such is the power of hope, and of overwhelming strength.
But in a distant corner of the globe, a very different scene was unfolding…
…
SHIELD Headquarters, deep underground, command center.
The atmosphere was heavy. One-eyed Nick Fury watched the incredible battle footage from Wakanda on the massive screens.
When Lucci casually pocketed Sanctuary, Fury's eye twitched and he unconsciously gripped the edge of the table.
"Coulson… is this really… genuine satellite data?" Fury's voice was rough, betraying barely controlled trembling.
Standing behind him, Phil Coulson nodded with a complicated expression. "Yes, Director. These scenes are entirely real. No edits, no fakes."
Fury took a long breath and leaned back, mumbling, "I knew it… that guy was bottomless. But I never imagined he was this powerful."
Until recently, he'd tried to leverage Lucci to defend Earth, even plotting to seize the initiative. Now it felt absurd. The ability to manipulate space, the audacity to dismiss Thanos—such beings were far, far beyond the reach of SHIELD or any human organization.
"Even Thanos—the madman who gave Captain Marvel so much trouble—killed in one sword strike?" Fury stared at the screen, feeling an overwhelming sense of helplessness.
"Director, the Avengers have sent in the detailed combat report," Agent Hill entered briskly, handing an e-file.
Fury read rapidly. With each line highlighting Lucci's achievements, his heart trembled more. Watching the fantastic feats described in the report, his lips quivered. "Is this truly the world we know? It's as if a god from myth has come down to Earth."
At the last paragraph—about the handling of Sanctuary—Fury's eye flashed with feverish light, then dimmed again.
"Sanctuary… Thanos's flagship…"
As a frontline commander defending Earth for many years, he knew better than anyone what that ship meant: a pinnacle of cosmic technology, generations ahead of Earth. If SHIELD could obtain it—or even a portion of its tech—it would mean a qualitative leap for them, perhaps a crucial first step towards interstellar civilization.
