Love by the Contract

Chapter 96

Chapter 96

The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow on the nursery where Emma sat, cradling her daughter. The twins giggled as they reached for the soft toys dangling above them, their innocent laughter momentarily lifting the fog of indecision that had hung over Emma for days. She smiled softly, brushing her fingers over her daughter’s tiny hand.

“I’m sorry I haven’t been fully here,” she whispered. “But I promise, I’ll do better—for both of you.”

The past few days had been a blur of emotions. Thomas’s departure lingered in her mind, his absence a constant reminder of the decisions she had yet to make. Alex, ever patient, had given her space, focusing instead on his time with the twins. Emma had tried to dive headfirst into her foundation work, but even that felt hollow without a clear sense of direction.

By late afternoon, Emma found herself in her office, surrounded by stacks of papers and a buzzing laptop. The foundation was gearing up for its next major initiative: a community outreach program to provide resources and support for families facing rare genetic conditions. As she sorted through the latest reports, a knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts.

It was Sofia, her assistant, carrying a folder and a much-needed cup of coffee. “The speech for the event is ready,” Sofia said, placing the folder on Emma’s desk. “It’s a big moment, Emma. You’re making waves in the community.”

Emma offered a faint smile, taking the coffee. “Thanks, Sofia. It’s not just me, though. This team is incredible. None of this would be possible without all of you.”

Sofia tilted her head, her expression softening. “You’re too humble. You’ve poured your heart into this foundation, and people are starting to notice. The event tomorrow is going to be amazing, and you deserve every bit of recognition.”

Emma’s smile wavered, but she nodded. “Let’s hope it goes off without a hitch.”

The next day, the foundation event was held at a sleek, modern venue downtown. The room buzzed with energy as guests mingled, sharing stories and building connections. Emma moved through the crowd, shaking hands and exchanging warm smiles. She wore a navy dress that gave her an air of quiet confidence, though inside, she felt anything but steady.

As the evening unfolded, the focus shifted to the stage. Emma was introduced by a local community leader, who spoke glowingly about her efforts to bring attention to the challenges families like hers faced.

“She has turned her personal struggles into a beacon of hope for so many,” the speaker said, their words drawing applause. “Please welcome Emma Barrett, founder and visionary.”

Emma stepped onto the stage, her heart pounding as the spotlight fell on her. She took a deep breath, looking out at the faces in the audience.

“Thank you,” she began, her voice steady despite the nerves bubbling beneath the surface. “When I started this foundation, it was out of desperation—desperation to find answers, to protect my children, and to create a better future for families like mine. I didn’t know if anyone would listen, but tonight, looking out at all of you, I know that this fight is bigger than me. It’s about community. It’s about hope. And it’s about change.”

The applause that followed was thunderous. For the first time in weeks, Emma felt a spark of confidence reigniting within her. She had accomplished something meaningful, something lasting, and it gave her a renewed sense of purpose.

As the event wound down, Emma lingered to thank her team and bid farewell to the guests. Alex arrived to pick up the twins, who had been with a nanny during the event, and gave her a proud smile as she walked toward him.

“You were amazing up there,” he said, holding their son in one arm while their daughter dozed against his chest.

Emma flushed slightly. “Thanks, Alex. I didn’t think I’d feel this… good about it. It’s been a while since I felt like myself.”

“You should feel good,” he said warmly. “This is exactly who you are—a fighter, a leader, someone who makes a difference. The twins are lucky to have you as their mom.”

His words touched her, and for a moment, she felt the old warmth between them flicker. But as much as she appreciated his support, her thoughts still strayed to Thomas and the unresolved feelings that lingered.

Later that night, Emma returned home, the house quiet after the day’s whirlwind of activity. She set her heels by the door and padded into the kitchen, savoring the silence. But as she reached the counter, she noticed a thick envelope sitting on the table with her name scrawled in a familiar handwriting.

Her breath caught. It was from Thomas.

She hesitated before opening it, her fingers trembling as she unfolded the letter.

Dear Emma,

By the time you read this, I’ll be far from the city and everything we’ve shared. Leaving was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but I knew it was what you needed to find clarity. I’ve thought about you every day since, and I wanted you to know a few things before I go.

Loving you has been the greatest honor of my life. You showed me a version of myself I didn’t know existed—a better, kinder, more hopeful man. And for that, I will always be grateful. I never wanted to complicate your life or force you to choose. All I’ve ever wanted is your happiness, even if it means I’m not the one standing by your side.

But Emma, if there’s even a part of you that feels the way I do, don’t let fear hold you back. Life is too short to live with regrets. If you ever decide that we’re worth fighting for, I’ll be waiting. Until then, I hope you find peace and joy in everything you do. You deserve nothing less.

Yours, always,

Thomas.

Emma pressed a hand to her mouth, tears spilling down her cheeks as she read the letter again and again. His words were raw, honest, and filled with a love that left her breathless. She clutched the letter to her chest, her heart aching with the weight of her emotions.
