Love by the Contract

Chapter 88

Chapter 88

The early morning light filtered through the tall windows of Emma’s office, casting a warm glow over the polished wood of her desk. Despite the peaceful exterior, Emma’s mind churned with turmoil. The betrayal by Darren Weiss, a man she had trusted to be a cornerstone of her foundation, had shaken her to her core. For days, she had replayed the revelation in her mind—the image of him among the kidnappers and the evidence of his ties to Harlow. It was a reminder of how deeply her enemies had infiltrated her world.

Seated across from her was Callum, his laptop open as he reviewed the findings from their investigation. “We’ve completed the internal audit,” he said, his voice steady but tinged with exhaustion. “We identified three more employees who’ve been leaking information to Harlow. None as high-ranking as Weiss, but their access to sensitive data was significant.”

Emma leaned back in her chair, her arms crossed. “Terminate them immediately and file a report with the authorities. Make sure our legal team is prepared for any backlash.”

Callum nodded. “Already in motion. I’ve also tightened our cybersecurity protocols and brought in an external consultant to evaluate vulnerabilities. This won’t happen again.”

Emma gave a tight nod, appreciating his efficiency but unable to shake her frustration. “It’s not enough to patch the holes, Callum. I need the team to believe in the foundation again. If there’s even a whisper of doubt about my leadership or our mission, we’ll lose everything we’ve built.”

Callum’s gaze softened. “They trust you, Emma. You’ve shown them time and again that you’re willing to fight for what’s right. But it wouldn’t hurt to address them directly.”

Emma sighed, running a hand through her hair. “You’re right. Set up an all-staff meeting for this afternoon.”

The staff meeting was held in the foundation’s auditorium, a space that was typically reserved for celebratory events or high-profile presentations. Today, the atmosphere was heavy, the staff seated in quiet anticipation as Emma took the stage.

She looked out at the faces before her—some familiar, others new. These were the people who had dedicated themselves to her vision, the ones who had trusted her leadership. And now, because of her oversight, that trust had been shaken.

Emma gripped the edges of the podium, her voice steady but heartfelt. “I won’t sugarcoat the situation. We’ve been betrayed from within, and that betrayal has caused harm—not just to me, but to all of us. To our mission. To the families we’ve pledged to support.”

A murmur rippled through the audience, but Emma pressed on. “I take full responsibility for what’s happened. As your leader, it was my job to protect this organization from threats, and I failed to do so. For that, I am truly sorry.”

The room was silent, the weight of her words settling over the crowd. Emma’s gaze swept across the room, her resolve hardening. “But this is not the end of our story. Together, we’ve achieved incredible things. We’ve brought hope to families who had none, challenged a broken system, and stood up to powerful adversaries. That work doesn’t end because of one man’s betrayal.”

She stepped away from the podium, her voice rising with determination. “I’m taking steps to ensure this never happens again. Our security is being overhauled. Our hiring practices are being reevaluated.

And most importantly, I’m recommitting myself to the values that brought us all here in the first place. This foundation is bigger than any one person—it’s about the lives we’re changing. Let’s not lose sight of that.”

The audience erupted into applause, a wave of support that left Emma both relieved and humbled. She stepped off the stage, Callum waiting for her at the bottom of the steps.

“That went well,” he said with a small smile. “You’ve got them back on your side.”

Emma nodded, though the weight on her shoulders hadn’t fully lifted. “It’s a start.”

Later that evening, Emma sat in her living room, a cup of tea cradled in her hands. The day had been long and emotionally draining, but for the first time in weeks, she felt a glimmer of hope. The foundation wasn’t just surviving—it was beginning to heal.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. She set her cup down and crossed the room, surprised to find Alex standing on her doorstep. His expression was serious but calm, a far cry from the tension that had characterized their recent interactions.

“Can we talk?” he asked.

Emma hesitated before stepping aside to let him in. They sat across from each other in the living room, the silence stretching between them.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about everything,” Alex began, his voice measured. “About us. About the twins. About what’s best for our family.”

Emma’s heart tightened. She had been bracing herself for this conversation, but that didn’t make it any easier. “What are you trying to say, Alex?”

He leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. “I think we should try again. Not for the sake of the twins, but for us. I still love you, Emma. I always have.”

His words hung in the air, heavy with emotion. Emma’s mind raced, torn between the memories of their shared past and the reality of their present. She couldn’t deny that a part of her still cared for Alex, but her feelings for Thomas complicated everything.

“Alex…” she began, her voice uncertain. “This isn’t something I can decide on a whim. Things between us are… complicated.”

“I know,” he said, his tone earnest. “And I’m not asking for an answer right now. I just needed you to know where I stand. I want us to be a family again.”

Emma looked away, her gaze landing on the framed photo of the twins on the mantel. Their innocent faces reminded her of everything she was fighting for—and everything she stood to lose.

The next morning, Emma met with Thomas at a café near the foundation’s office. He had been her rock through so much, and she knew she owed him honesty about what Alex had said.

Thomas listened quietly as Emma recounted the conversation, his expression unreadable. When she finished, he leaned back in his chair, his arms crossed.

“So, he wants you back,” Thomas said, his voice calm but guarded. “What do you want?”

Emma hesitated, her chest tightening. “I don’t know. I care about you, Thomas. I care about what we’ve built together. But Alex and I have a history. We share the twins. It’s not an easy choice.”

Thomas nodded slowly, his gaze steady. “I get it. But I need to know where I stand, Emma. I’m not interested in being a second option.”

Emma looked down at her hands, the weight of his words pressing on her. “I don’t see you that way. I just… I need time to figure things out.”

Thomas reached across the table, his hand covering hers. “Take the time you need. Just don’t shut me out.”

That evening, Emma sat alone in her office, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. The betrayal within her foundation, the rekindled feelings for Alex, the deepening connection with Thomas—it was all too much.

Her phone buzzed on the desk, drawing her attention. It was a message from Callum:

Regulatory meeting confirmed for next week. Let’s make sure we’re prepared.
