Love by the Contract

Chapter 85

Chapter 85

The rhythmic ticking of the clock echoed through Emma’s office as she stared at the reports spread across her desk. Pages of financial records, legal briefs, and emails painted a confusing picture, but Emma knew there was a pattern. She just needed to find it. The weight of the allegations against her foundation was heavier than ever, and she could feel it pressing down on her chest like a physical burden.

Rebecca sat across from her, meticulously scanning a spreadsheet. “We’re getting closer,” she said, her tone sharp but encouraging. “The inconsistencies in the donations trace back to the same three shell companies. All of them have ties to Harlow Pharmaceuticals.”

Emma’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Victor Harlow,” she muttered. “Of course. He’s been pulling the strings from the start.”

Rebecca nodded, her eyes narrowing. “We suspected it, but now we have proof. These companies funneled money into your foundation under false pretenses and then flagged the transactions as suspicious through anonymous tips. It’s a setup, Emma. Classic corporate sabotage.”

Emma leaned back in her chair, running a hand through her hair. The pieces were falling into place, but the scale of Harlow’s scheme was staggering. “He wants to force me into a corner,” she said. “If my foundation collapses, it gives him control over the narrative—and potentially over the families we’re trying to help.”

Her voice grew colder as anger replaced her initial despair. “He’s willing to destroy lives just to protect his bottom line.”

Rebecca closed her laptop, her expression grim. “So, what’s the plan? We can counter these claims legally, but it’ll take time. If Harlow keeps escalating, we may not have that luxury.”

Emma’s jaw tightened. “We fight back. If he wants to play dirty, then we’ll show the world exactly who he is. Every lie, every underhanded deal—I want it all exposed.”

Rebecca hesitated. “That’s a dangerous game, Emma. Harlow has resources we can’t even imagine. Are you sure you’re ready for that kind of fight?”

Emma’s eyes burned with determination. “I don’t have a choice. If I let him win, everything we’ve built is gone.”

The next few days were a whirlwind of activity. Emma, Rebecca, and a small team of trusted allies combed through mountains of documents, emails, and financial transactions, piecing together the trail that led back to Victor Harlow. It was painstaking work, but with every new discovery, the picture became clearer.

Thomas, despite the lingering tension between them, threw himself into the effort as well. His expertise in navigating corporate structures proved invaluable, and while Emma was still wary of the fallout from his past, she couldn’t deny how much he contributed.

“I found something,” Thomas said late one evening, holding up a printout. “Harlow’s been using a front organization to influence regulatory bodies. He’s not just targeting your foundation—he’s manipulating the entire industry to eliminate competition.”

Emma took the paper, her heart pounding as she read the details. It was all there: payments, correspondence, even signed directives that tied Harlow directly to the corruption. This was the smoking gun they needed.

“We need to go public,” she said firmly. “This can’t just be a legal battle anymore. People need to see the truth.”

The decision to go public wasn’t one Emma made lightly. She knew the risks. Harlow would retaliate, and the media frenzy could spiral out of control. But she also knew that transparency was their best weapon.

A press conference was scheduled, and Emma spent hours preparing her statement. Tara coached her on delivery, while Rebecca finalized the evidence they would present. By the morning of the conference, Emma felt as ready as she could be.

The room was packed with reporters, their cameras trained on her as she stepped up to the podium. The energy in the air was electric, a mix of anticipation and tension.

“Good morning,” Emma began, her voice steady but firm. “I stand before you today not just as the founder of a charitable organization but as a mother and an advocate for truth. Over the past weeks, my foundation has been subjected to baseless allegations designed to discredit our work. Today, I’m here to set the record straight.”

She outlined the evidence against Harlow, her words growing more impassioned as she detailed his attempts to undermine her foundation. The reporters scribbled furiously, their cameras capturing every moment.

“We will not be intimidated,” Emma concluded. “And we will not allow the greed of one man to overshadow the needs of the families we serve.”

The room erupted into questions as Emma stepped away from the podium, but she ignored them, her focus already shifting to the next steps. As she exited the room, her phone buzzed with a call from Alex.

“You were incredible,” he said, his voice filled with admiration. “That took guts, Emma.”

“Thanks,” she said, her voice softening. “But it’s not over yet. Harlow’s going to come after us harder now.”

“We’ll handle it,” Alex assured her. “Whatever it takes.”

That evening, as Emma prepared for a strategy meeting with her team, her phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number. The message sent a chill down her spine.

“You’ve made a mistake. Back off now, or you’ll regret it.”

Emma showed the message to Rebecca and Thomas, both of whom looked equally concerned.

“It’s Harlow,” Rebecca said. “He’s trying to scare you.”

Emma’s expression hardened. “It’s not going to work.”

But even as she said the words, a seed of unease took root in her mind. Harlow wasn’t the kind of man who issued idle threats.

The next morning, Emma arrived at her office to find the building unusually quiet. As she stepped inside, she noticed a stack of papers on her desk that hadn’t been there the night before. Her heart sank as she saw the headline on the top page: “Barrett Foundation Under Investigation for Fraud.”

The accompanying documents outlined a new set of allegations, this time claiming that Emma herself had misused funds for personal gain. It was a lie, of course, but the level of detail suggested that Harlow had been planning this attack for months.

Rebecca stormed into the office moments later, a look of fury on her face. “We just got served,” she said, holding up a legal notice. “They’re filing a formal complaint with the SEC.”

Emma’s stomach churned. “How are they doing this so fast?”

“They’re throwing everything they have at you,” Rebecca said. “They’re hoping to overwhelm you before you can mount a defense.”

Emma sat down heavily, her mind racing. The walls felt like they were closing in, but she forced herself to focus. “We need to push back,” she said. “Get ahead of this before it gains traction.”

Rebecca nodded. “I’ll start drafting a response. But Emma… you need to be careful. Harlow’s not just trying to discredit you. He’s trying to destroy you.”

Emma looked out the window, her resolve hardening once more. “Then we make sure he fails.”

As the day wore on, Emma and her team worked tirelessly to counter the new allegations. But as night fell, Emma couldn’t shake the feeling that something bigger was coming. Her fears were confirmed when Thomas rushed into her office, his face pale.

“We have a problem,” he said, holding up a tablet. The screen displayed a news report, the headline blaring: “Whistleblower Claims Barrett Foundation Funds Used for Personal Luxury.”

Emma’s blood ran cold as she watched the report. An anonymous source claimed to have insider knowledge of Emma’s finances, accusing her of siphoning money from the foundation to fund a lavish lifestyle. The accusations were entirely fabricated, but the damage was already being done.

“This is it,” Thomas said grimly. “He’s going for the kill.”

Emma clenched her fists, her anger burning hotter than her fear. “Then it’s time to take him down.”

As midnight approached, Emma and her team worked on a counterstrike. They compiled every piece of evidence they had against Harlow, planning to release it in a bombshell report the next day. But just as they were finalizing their plans, Emma’s phone buzzed with a call from an unknown number.

She answered cautiously. “Hello?”

The voice on the other end was cold and unmistakable. “Ms. Barrett,” Harlow said. “I thought we should have a little chat.”

Emma’s grip tightened on the phone. “You’ve gone too far, Harlow.”

“Have I?” he replied, his tone mocking. “You’ve made this fight personal, and now you’re learning what happens when you cross me.”

“This isn’t a fight,” Emma shot back. “It’s the beginning of your downfall.”

Harlow chuckled darkly. “We’ll see about that. But I’d think twice before you make your next move. I’d hate for things to get… messy.”

The call ended, leaving Emma with a sense of foreboding she couldn’t shake. She looked at her team, their faces reflecting the same unease.

“We will release the report tomorrow,” she said firmly. “No matter what.”
