Love by the Contract

Chapter 78

Chapter 78

The victory against Victor Harlow should have been a moment of triumph, a turning point that marked the beginning of a brighter future for Emma and the Barrett Foundation. Instead, the custody papers Alex served her with weighed on her like a storm cloud, overshadowing every accomplishment. She sat in her living room that evening, the documents spread across the coffee table, their cold, formal language a stark reminder of the battle ahead.

The twins were asleep in their room, their soft breathing audible through the baby monitor beside her. Emma’s hands trembled as she turned the pages, each line of legal jargon eroding her resolve. How had it come to this? After everything they had endured together—the twins’ precarious birth, the foundation, the fight against Harlow—how could Alex have blindsided her like this?

A knock at the door startled her. She hesitated before answering, her heart sinking when she found Thomas standing on the threshold, his expression a mix of concern and frustration.

“I came as soon as I heard,” he said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. “Alex served you custody papers? What the hell is he thinking?”

Emma closed the door behind him and leaned against it, her exhaustion evident. “He says he wants to be part of their lives. That he deserves shared custody.”

Thomas’s jaw tightened. “And what about you? You’ve been the one holding everything together. Does he think he can just swoop in now that things are stable?”

“I don’t know what he thinks,” Emma said quietly. “But I do know that I can’t keep fighting him and everything else at the same time. It’s too much.”

Thomas placed a steadying hand on her shoulder. “You don’t have to do this alone, Emma. Whatever you need—legal advice, moral support, someone to yell at Alex—I’m here.”

His words brought tears to her eyes, but she blinked them away. “Thank you,” she said softly. “But this is something I have to figure out on my own. For the twins’ sake.”

The next few days passed in a blur of meetings with lawyers, court filings, and sleepless nights. Emma poured herself into preparing for the custody hearing, determined to prove that she was the best choice for the twins’ primary caregiver. But as the date loomed closer, the strain began to take its toll.

Her once-organized schedule descended into chaos. Emails went unanswered, calls from donors were postponed, and her presence at the foundation became sporadic at best. Even the twins seemed to pick up on her stress, their usually cheerful demeanor giving way to crankiness and tears.

On the morning of the hearing, Emma stood in front of her bathroom mirror, trying to muster the confidence she desperately needed. She adjusted the lapels of her blazer and practiced a calm expression, but the dark circles under her eyes betrayed her sleepless nights.

“You’ve got this,” she whispered to herself, though the words rang hollow.

The courtroom was a stark contrast to the chaos of her mind. It was quiet and orderly, the judge presiding with an air of authority that demanded respect. Alex was already seated at the defendant’s table, his lawyer beside him. He looked calm, almost regretful, but Emma refused to let herself be swayed by the expression on his face.

Her lawyer, Claire, gave her a reassuring nod as they took their seats. “Remember, Emma,” she said in a low voice, “this is about what’s best for the twins. Stick to the facts, stay composed, and don’t let emotions cloud your testimony.”

Emma nodded, though her hands were clenched tightly in her lap. As the proceedings began, she listened intently to the arguments presented by both sides. Alex’s lawyer painted him as a loving father who had been unfairly sidelined, emphasizing his willingness to co-parent and his financial stability.

When it was Emma’s turn to testify, she spoke with quiet conviction. She recounted the sacrifices she had made to care for the twins, the sleepless nights spent by their side in the NICU, and the countless hours devoted to ensuring their well-being. Her voice trembled only slightly as she described her fears about Alex’s ability to provide the stability they needed.

“He loves them,” she admitted, her gaze briefly meeting Alex’s. “But love isn’t always enough. The twins need consistency, and I’m the one who’s been there for them every step of the way.”

Alex’s lawyer cross-examined her with sharp precision, questioning her demanding schedule and the toll her work at the foundation might take on her ability to care for the twins. Emma did her best to remain composed, but each question felt like a small cut, chipping away at her confidence.

By the time the hearing recessed for lunch, Emma felt like she was unraveling. She sat on a bench outside the courtroom, her head in her hands, as Claire brought her a bottle of water.

“You’re doing fine,” Claire said gently. “The judge is listening. Stay focused.”

Emma nodded, though her heart felt like it was beating too fast. She sipped the water, trying to calm the growing sense of panic in her chest.

Thomas appeared moments later, his presence grounding her. “How’s it going?” he asked, his concern evident.

“It’s… hard,” Emma admitted. “I feel like I’m being torn apart in there.”

Thomas sat beside her, his hand brushing hers. “You’re stronger than you think, Emma. Don’t let them shake you.”

His words offered a small measure of comfort, but as the afternoon session began, Emma’s anxiety returned in full force. She sat stiffly at the plaintiff’s table, her vision blurring as she tried to focus on the judge’s questions. Her chest felt tight, her breaths shallow.

Then, suddenly, the world tilted.

Emma barely registered the gasps around her as she slumped forward, the sound of Claire’s voice calling her name distant and muffled. The last thing she saw before everything went black was the look of alarm on Alex’s face as he sprang to his feet.

When Emma opened her eyes, she was lying on a cot in a small, sterile room. A nurse hovered nearby, checking her vitals, while Claire and Thomas stood at the foot of the cot, their expressions a mix of relief and concern.

“What happened?” Emma murmured, her voice weak.

“You collapsed,” Claire said gently. “The stress finally caught up with you.”

Emma’s heart sank as she processed her words. “Did… did the hearing continue?”

“No,” Thomas said firmly. “The judge called for an adjournment. They’re rescheduling the next session. Right now, you need to focus on getting better.”

Emma closed her eyes, shame and frustration warring within her. “This just proves their point,” she whispered. “That I’m not capable of handling everything.”

“Stop,” Thomas said, his tone firm but kind. “You’re human, Emma. You’ve been carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. No one can do that alone.”

Emma nodded weakly, though the doubt lingered. As she rested, the nurse left to give her some privacy, and Claire leaned closer.

“We’ll use this as an opportunity,” Claire said. “This shows just how much you’ve sacrificed for the twins. It’s not a weakness, Emma. It’s proof of how deeply you care.”

Emma wanted to believe her, but the road ahead felt more daunting than ever. As the day turned to night, she resolved to find a way to balance her drive with the support she so desperately needed. For the twins, for herself, and for the future she was still fighting to build.
