Chapter 68
Chapter 68
Emma stared at the blueprint on her laptop screen, the beginnings of something that finally felt like a purpose. The foundation she envisioned would provide resources for families of children with rare genetic disorders, offering financial support, education, and access to cutting-edge treatments. It was ambitious, but every time she thought of her twins and the obstacles they had faced, she knew it was worth pursuing.
She leaned back in her chair, exhaustion threatening to pull her under, but a surge of determination kept her upright. Thomas had dropped by earlier to brainstorm ideas, his practicality balancing her idealism. Together, they had outlined a plan that seemed not only feasible but impactful.
Her phone buzzed beside her, interrupting her thoughts. It was an email notification from a potential donor expressing interest in the foundation. Emma smiled for the first time in hours, her heart swelling with cautious optimism.
As she typed a reply, her apartment door creaked open, and Thomas stepped inside, carrying a tray of coffee and sandwiches. “You’ve been at it all day,” he said, placing the tray on the table. “You need fuel.”
Emma gave him a grateful smile. “I’m too wired to eat, but thanks. Things are finally starting to come together.”
Thomas pulled up a chair beside her, glancing at the screen. “You’re really doing this. It’s incredible, Emma. This foundation could change lives.”
Her smile faltered slightly. “I just hope it doesn’t feel like too little, too late. I keep thinking about how many families are out there right now, feeling as helpless as I did.”
Thomas reached out, his hand brushing hers. “What you’re doing isn’t just important. It’s brave. And you’re going to help more people than you realize.”
His words settled over her like a warm blanket, steadying her frayed nerves. She looked at him, gratitude flickering in her eyes. “Thank you, Thomas. For believing in me.”
“Always,” he said simply.
The next day, Emma found herself in a sleek office building downtown, preparing to meet with a potential corporate sponsor. She smoothed the wrinkles from her blouse, her nerves a mix of excitement and apprehension. If she could secure this partnership, it would provide the foundation with the financial backing needed to launch within months.
The meeting room was bright and modern, but as the sponsor—a man named Victor Harlow—walked in, the atmosphere shifted. He was tall, with a commanding presence and a sharp, calculating gaze that immediately put Emma on edge.
“Ms. Barrett,” he said, extending a hand. His grip was firm, almost aggressive. “I’ve heard a lot about your project. Quite the endeavor you’re taking on.”
Emma smiled politely, though her instincts prickled. “Thank you, Mr. Harlow. I’m excited about the potential impact this foundation can have. Families dealing with rare genetic disorders often feel isolated and overwhelmed. I want to change that.”
Victor took a seat across from her, folding his hands on the table. “A noble cause. But noble causes often come with obstacles, especially when they disrupt certain… established systems.”
Emma frowned slightly. “I’m not sure I follow.”
Victor’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “You’re stepping into territory that affects powerful industries, Ms. Barrett. Pharmaceutical companies, for instance, have a vested interest in maintaining control over treatments and their availability. A foundation like yours could upset that balance.”
Emma’s stomach tightened, but she kept her expression neutral. “My goal isn’t to disrupt anything. It’s to help families in need.”
“Of course,” Victor said smoothly. “But intentions don’t always align with outcomes. I’ve seen initiatives like yours face significant pushback. It would be a shame if your foundation encountered… complications.”
His tone sent a chill down Emma’s spine. She straightened her posture, meeting his gaze directly. “Is that a warning, Mr. Harlow?”
Victor’s smile widened, but it remained cold. “Consider it friendly advice. You have a bright future ahead of you, Ms. Barrett. It would be wise to tread carefully.”
The meeting ended shortly after, Victor’s parting words hanging heavily in the air. As Emma stepped outside, the crisp autumn wind bit at her cheeks, but it did little to clear the unease curling in her gut.
That evening, Emma shared the encounter with Thomas over coffee in her apartment. He listened intently, his brow furrowing as she recounted Victor’s thinly veiled threats.
“I don’t like this guy,” Thomas said bluntly. “He’s trying to intimidate you. Don’t let him.”
“I’m not afraid of him,” Emma said, though her voice wavered slightly. “But I can’t shake the feeling that he’s planning something. He’s too calculated to just let this go.”
Thomas leaned forward, his expression serious. “Then we’ll stay ahead of him. Keep everything transparent, make sure there’s nothing he can use against you.”
Emma nodded, grateful for his support. But as the night wore on, her unease only deepened.
The following morning, Emma received an unexpected package at her office. Inside was a thick folder of documents and a handwritten note:
Ms. Barrett,
You’re not the only one with secrets. Perhaps you should ask your friend Thomas about his past before aligning yourself too closely with him.
Warm regards, Victor Harlow.
Emma’s hands shook as she flipped through the documents. They contained detailed accounts of a lawsuit involving Thomas from several years ago, accusing him of ethical violations in a previous business venture. Though the case had been dismissed, the accusations were damning.
Her mind raced. Could this be true? And if it was, what did it mean for the foundation… and for her trust in Thomas?
