Love by the Contract

Chapter 197

Chapter 197

The morning light streamed through Emma’s office window as she sat at her desk, surrounded by neatly stacked documents, spreadsheets, and notes from her most trusted advisors. The proposal from Horizons Aid lay open before her, its carefully worded promises of transformative collaboration and mutual benefit staring back at her.

“This could be it,” Emma murmured to herself, her fingers drumming lightly on the edge of the table. The partnership’s potential was undeniable. With Horizons Aid’s expansive resources, her foundation could scale its programs to unprecedented levels. Yet, the shadow of the recent cyberattack and the warning from the whistleblower lingered in her mind.

Thomas entered, a steaming cup of coffee in hand. He set it down beside her and took the seat across the desk. “You’ve been here since dawn,” he said, concern etched in his voice. “What’s the verdict?”

Emma sighed, leaning back in her chair. “The team’s split. Some think we’d be foolish to turn this down—it’s everything we’ve been working toward. But others, including me, are wary. Horizons Aid isn’t exactly spotless, and we’d be tying our reputation to theirs.”

Thomas nodded, his expression thoughtful. “You’ve always trusted your gut, Emma. What’s it telling you?”

“That I need more information,” she admitted. “I can’t afford to make a blind leap.”

The day passed in a blur of meetings and calls. Emma consulted with her board, her legal team, and even reached out to external advisors to scrutinize every line of the proposal. The transparency of the process was deliberate; after the leak and subsequent scandals, trust was something Emma was determined to rebuild and maintain.

By the late afternoon, Emma had made progress but still felt uneasy. She stared at the list of potential risks, her pen hovering over the paper as she tried to weigh them against the immense benefits.

A knock at her office door interrupted her thoughts. Alex poked his head in, his expression neutral but curious. “Got a minute?”

Emma gestured for him to come in, grateful for the break. “What’s up?”

“I heard about the Horizons Aid proposal,” he said, sitting down. “Thought you might want to hear an outsider’s perspective.”

Emma smiled faintly. “I’d like that.”

Alex leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Look, I know how much you want this to work. But I’ve been in business long enough to know that when something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Do your due diligence, but don’t ignore your instincts. You’ve built something incredible—don’t let anyone compromise that.”

His words resonated, and Emma nodded. “Thanks, Alex. That means a lot.”

As the evening approached, Emma felt herself leaning toward accepting the partnership. The potential benefits for the foundation and the people they served were too significant to ignore. She crafted an email to her board, outlining her tentative decision and requesting final feedback before committing.

Just as she was about to hit send, her laptop dinged with a new email. The subject line read:

“Confidential: Critical Information About Horizons Aid Partnership.”

Her breath caught as she opened the message. It was from an anonymous whistleblower claiming to be an insider at Horizons Aid. The email detailed a series of undisclosed scandals within the organization—mismanagement of funds, unethical practices in their overseas projects, and ties to controversial political entities.

Emma’s eyes scanned the document attached to the email, which included financial records and internal memos that supported the claims. Each piece of evidence painted a damning picture of an organization that could jeopardize everything she had worked for.

Her phone buzzed beside her, pulling her attention momentarily. It was Thomas.

“Dinner’s ready when you’re done.”

Emma looked back at the screen, her pulse quickening. The information in front of her was explosive, and the implications were staggering. Accepting the partnership with Horizons Aid could elevate her foundation to new heights—or destroy it entirely.
