Love by the Contract

Chapter 195

Chapter 195

The hum of activity in the foundation's IT department was relentless. Screens flashed warnings, and the tension was palpable as Emma moved from desk to desk. Her team had been working around the clock to fend off a cyberattack that threatened to cripple the foundation’s operations.

“We’ve managed to isolate the main breach,” Amara, the head of IT, said, her voice strained but steady. “But whoever’s behind this isn’t giving up easily. They’re probing every vulnerability.”

Emma leaned over Amara’s desk, scanning the data. “How bad is the damage so far?”

“Minimal, thanks to our backups,” Amara said. “But if they get through to the encrypted files, we could be looking at a major leak.”

Emma’s stomach tightened. Those encrypted files held sensitive data about the foundation’s donors, beneficiaries, and operational strategies. A breach wouldn’t just be embarrassing—it could dismantle everything they had worked so hard to build.

“Get me an update every fifteen minutes,” Emma instructed. “And escalate this with Elena’s team immediately.”

By noon, a team of cybersecurity experts led by Elena, a no-nonsense professional with years of experience handling high-profile breaches, had joined the battle. Her voice came through Emma’s headset with calm authority.

“We’ve deployed countermeasures and are tracking the attackers’ IP addresses,” Elena explained. “The sophistication of this attack suggests a coordinated effort, not just a random hack. We’re working to trace its origin.”

Emma nodded, her jaw tight. “Do whatever it takes. We can’t afford to lose.”

Amara chimed in, her fingers flying over her keyboard. “We’ve reinforced firewalls and set traps in the system. If they try to push deeper, we might be able to catch their location.”

The minutes dragged on as Emma divided her time between supporting the IT team and managing communication with donors and stakeholders. She kept the updates measured and professional, avoiding panic while assuring everyone that the situation was under control.

As dusk settled, the tide began to turn. Amara let out a triumphant yell from across the room. “They’re retreating! We’ve locked them out of the main servers and traced some activity to offshore locations.”

Elena’s voice buzzed through the speakerphone. “The attackers left a trail. We’re narrowing down the source and should have something concrete soon. For now, your systems are secure.”

A ripple of applause swept through the room, but Emma knew the battle wasn’t over. “Great work, everyone,” she said, standing at the center of the room. “Let’s stay vigilant. This was a warning shot. Whoever did this will try again.”

The next morning, Emma’s team was wrapping up the post-mortem analysis when Amara approached her with a pale face, clutching a printed email.

“This came in anonymously,” Amara said, handing over the paper. “It claims to identify the group behind the attack.”

Emma read the email, her eyes narrowing as she processed the words:

The attackers are linked to Horizons Aid, a rival nonprofit organization. Their objective was to sabotage your upcoming initiative and discredit your foundation. Watch your back—they’re not done.

Emma’s lips pressed into a thin line. Horizons Aid had always been a contentious player in the nonprofit world. Known for their aggressive tactics, they had competed with Emma’s foundation for grants and partnerships in the past. If they were behind this, the stakes were higher than ever.

Amara cleared her throat, pulling Emma from her thoughts. “Do you think it’s real?”

“We can’t take it lightly,” Emma said, her voice resolute. “But we need confirmation before making any accusations. Let’s share this with Elena’s team and see if their trace matches up.”

That afternoon, Emma sat in her office, reviewing plans for the upcoming launch of their health education program. The cyberattack had shaken her, but she was determined not to let it derail their progress. As she flipped through the documents, her calendar pinged with a reminder. She frowned, clicking on the notification.

Her heart sank. The alert was for a meeting scheduled two days from now—with representatives from Horizons Aid.
