Love by the Contract

Chapter 173

Chapter 173

The early morning sunlight filtered through Emma Hamilton’s home office, casting a warm glow on the papers scattered across her desk. Despite the peaceful atmosphere outside, her mind was anything but calm.

The technical malfunction during the public demonstration had not only embarrassed her foundation but also cast doubt on the reliability of the Mobile Health Initiative, a cornerstone of her work.

Emma leaned back in her chair, her hands gripping a mug of coffee gone cold. Her thoughts churned as she replayed the events of the previous day.

The technical issues weren’t random glitches—she was certain of it now. Eleanor’s discovery of tampered settings pointed to sabotage, and Emma was determined to uncover the truth.

The door creaked open, and Thomas stepped in, already dressed for a meeting. His sharp suit and calm demeanor were a stark contrast to Emma’s frazzled appearance.

“Morning,” he greeted, setting a fresh cup of coffee on her desk. “Any updates?”

Emma shook her head. “Not yet. Eleanor is working on retrieving the security footage from the event. If someone tampered with the equipment, we’ll find them.”

Thomas nodded, his expression serious. “I reached out to a contact at a cybersecurity firm. They’re sending someone over to review the logs from the mobile unit.”

Emma glanced at him, grateful for his support.

“Thank you. We need to get ahead of this. The press is already running with the narrative that the initiative is unreliable. If we don’t address this quickly, it could damage the entire program.”

Thomas sat across from her, his gaze steady. “You’ve dealt with worse, Emma. You’ll handle this too.”

She nodded, drawing strength from his confidence. But even as she steeled herself, a flicker of doubt lingered in her mind. Who would go to such lengths to sabotage her work, and why?

By midday, Eleanor arrived with a flash drive containing the event’s security footage. Emma and her core team gathered in the foundation’s conference room to review it. The atmosphere was tense, the only sound the faint hum of the projector as the footage played.

Eleanor pointed to the screen. “Here, this is just before the demonstration started. Watch closely.”

The footage showed a technician entering the mobile unit, setting up the equipment as planned. But moments later, another figure appeared—a man in a staff uniform Emma didn’t recognize.

He moved with purpose, his back to the camera as he adjusted the system’s settings. After a few minutes, he exited the unit, glancing around nervously before disappearing into the crowd.

“Who is that?” Emma asked, her tone sharp.

Eleanor shook her head. “He wasn’t on the official staff list. I’ve already cross-referenced the event roster. He must have posed as one of the temporary hires.”

Emma’s jaw tightened. “Do we have any leads on who he is?”

“We’re working on it,” Eleanor replied. “But I did some digging, and there’s something else you should see.” She pulled up another file on her laptop, projecting it onto the screen. It was a series of emails between members of a rival nonprofit—HealthFirst Alliance. The tone of the messages was incriminating. One read:

“If we discredit Hamilton’s initiative, we can redirect donor interest toward our programs.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed. HealthFirst Alliance had been a minor competitor in the nonprofit space, focused on similar goals but with less innovative approaches. Their jealousy and desperation to stay relevant now seemed to have crossed an unforgivable line.

“This is it,” Emma said, her voice cold. “They’re behind the sabotage.”

Thomas leaned forward, his expression dark. “What’s the plan?”

Emma exhaled slowly, collecting her thoughts. “First, we secure proof. I want every angle covered before we take action. Then, we go public—expose their actions and show the world what they’ve done. But we’ll need to be strategic. If we mishandle this, it could backfire.”

Eleanor nodded. “I’ll keep digging. If there’s more, I’ll find it.”

Emma stood, her resolve firm. “Good. Let’s move quickly. I won’t let anyone undermine what we’ve built.”

As the day wore on, Emma immersed herself in the investigation, working alongside her team to piece together a clear case against HealthFirst Alliance. By evening, progress was steady, but exhaustion began to creep in. She leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples, when her phone buzzed on the desk.

It was a call from the twins’ school.

A knot of anxiety formed in her stomach as she answered. “Hello, this is Emma Hamilton.”

“Mrs. Hamilton, this is Principal Carter from Greenfield Academy,” came the calm but serious voice on the other end. “I’m calling about Lucy. There’s been a medical emergency. She’s stable now, but we think you should come immediately.”

Emma’s breath caught, her heart pounding. “What happened?”

“She fainted during recess,” the principal explained. “The nurse suspects dehydration, but she also mentioned some concerning symptoms that might need further evaluation.”

“I’m on my way,” Emma said, her voice trembling.

She hung up and grabbed her coat, her mind racing. Thomas appeared in the doorway, concern etched on his face. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s Lucy,” Emma said, her voice shaking. “She fainted at school. I need to go.”
