Chapter 163
Chapter 163
The morning sunlight streamed into Emma Hamilton’s office, but the warmth of the day was lost on her as she reviewed the latest reports. Spread across her desk were documents detailing the extent of the misappropriation at the foundation’s disaster recovery site.
The further she dug, the more she uncovered, and what had started as missing supplies had now revealed a web of deceit, implicating not just the local contractor but several vendors and even members of her own team.
Emma leaned back in her chair, her fingers pressing against her temples. “This is worse than I imagined,” she muttered.
Thomas, sitting across from her with his own stack of reports, looked equally troubled. His health was improving, but the stress of the situation had clearly taken its toll. “They didn’t just steal supplies; they jeopardized lives. Medical kits and food packages meant for families were sold off for profit. It’s unconscionable.”
Emma nodded, her jaw tightening. “We need to act swiftly. If we let this fester, it won’t just undermine the foundation’s mission—it’ll destroy trust, both locally and globally. We can’t afford that.”
Emma convened an emergency meeting with her core leadership team via video conference. Eleanor, her operations director, appeared on screen first, followed by Nadia, who had been instrumental in uncovering the discrepancies.
“Thank you for joining on short notice,” Emma began, her tone firm but controlled. “The situation at the recovery site has escalated. We’ve confirmed that the corruption extends beyond the contractor. Multiple local vendors and even some of our own staff members are implicated.”
The team exchanged grim looks as Emma continued, “We’ve already terminated the contractor, but that’s just the beginning. I’m authorizing a full-scale investigation into the entire supply chain. Eleanor, I need you to coordinate with our auditors and legal team to ensure we gather irrefutable evidence.”
Eleanor nodded. “I’m on it. We’ll trace every transaction and hold everyone accountable.”
“Nadia,” Emma said, turning to the young staffer, “your insights have been invaluable so far. I need you to liaise with Dr. Ravi and our local partners to ensure we have their cooperation. Transparency is key.”
“I’ll get started immediately,” Nadia replied.
Thomas leaned forward, his voice calm but resolute. “Emma, this is going to ruffle feathers. People will push back, especially those who’ve been benefiting from this corruption.”
Emma’s eyes hardened. “Let them push. We’re not backing down.”
The investigation unfolded rapidly. Emma’s team worked tirelessly, sifting through invoices, cross-checking delivery logs, and interviewing staff and vendors.
Patterns began to emerge—suspiciously inflated invoices, ghost deliveries, and payments funneled through shell companies.
One name kept resurfacing: Ramesh Patel, a local manager who had been overseeing logistics at the recovery site. His records were riddled with inconsistencies, and several whistleblowers pointed to him as a key player in the scheme.
Emma decided it was time to confront him directly.
Ramesh arrived at the recovery site’s temporary office looking tense but defiant. Emma and Thomas were waiting for him, flanked by Dr. Ravi and two security personnel.
“Mr. Patel,” Emma began, her tone icy, “we need to discuss your role in the recent misappropriation of supplies.”
Ramesh crossed his arms, his expression guarded. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. My records are in order.”
Emma slid a stack of documents across the table. “These say otherwise. Falsified delivery logs, inflated invoices, payments to unregistered vendors—all traced back to your department.”
Ramesh’s eyes flickered with unease, but he maintained his composure. “Those aren’t my signatures. Someone’s trying to frame me.”
Thomas interjected, his voice steady but firm. “We’ve interviewed multiple witnesses, all of whom confirm your involvement. This isn’t just mismanagement, Mr. Patel—it’s criminal activity.”
Ramesh’s demeanor shifted, his defiance giving way to anger. “You think you can come here, throw around accusations, and destroy my reputation? You don’t understand how things work here. I was just following orders.”
“Whose orders?” Emma pressed, her eyes narrowing.
Ramesh hesitated, then smirked. “You think I’m going to roll over and take the fall for this? Think again. If you push this, you’ll regret it. You and your entire staff.”
The threat hung in the air like a storm cloud.
Emma’s expression didn’t waver. “That sounded like a threat, Mr. Patel. I’d advise you to reconsider your tone.”
He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper. “You have no idea who you’re dealing with. Walk away, or you’ll wish you had.”
After the tense meeting, Emma and Thomas regrouped with Dr. Ravi in a private room.
“That was more than just bluster,” Dr. Ravi said, his brow furrowed. “Ramesh has connections, and if he feels cornered, he won’t hesitate to retaliate.”
Emma nodded, her mind racing. “We need to protect our staff. Increase security at the site and ensure that everyone knows to report any suspicious activity.”
Thomas placed a hand on her shoulder. “What about Ramesh? He’s clearly a flight risk.”
“I’ve already contacted local authorities,” Emma replied. “They’ll monitor him while we gather more evidence. But we can’t rely on them entirely. We need to stay vigilant.”
