Chapter 148
Chapter 148
The conference room hummed with tension, the air thick with anticipation as Emma Hamilton took her seat at the head of the table. Her legal team, headed by Nora Matheson, sat opposite her, their laptops open and stacks of documents spread before them.
This was not the kind of meeting Emma had envisioned when she founded the organization. She’d hoped to focus on saving lives, not defending her work against baseless accusations.
“We’re looking at a potentially lengthy legal dispute,” Nora began, her voice steady but grave. “The Garrison Foundation isn’t just accusing us of intellectual property theft—they’re leveraging this claim to cast doubt on the integrity of the foundation as a whole.”
Emma folded her hands tightly in her lap, her expression unreadable. “Do they have any solid evidence, or is this purely a smear campaign?”
Nora adjusted her glasses, flipping through the file in front of her. “From what we’ve seen, their evidence is flimsy. They’re relying on overlaps between the data stolen during your office break-in and their own research.
But Alan’s analysis suggests that these overlaps are coincidental or involve publicly available information.”
“Then why does it feel like they’re winning?” Emma’s voice was calm, but her frustration simmered just below the surface.
“Because this isn’t just about evidence,” Nora replied. “It’s about optics. They’ve managed to plant the idea of misconduct in the minds of your donors and the public. Even if we win this case, the damage to your reputation could linger.”
Emma exhaled slowly, her mind racing. Her foundation’s mission—to provide groundbreaking treatments for genetic disorders—was too important to be overshadowed by scandal. She couldn’t allow this to derail their work.
“What’s our plan?” she asked, her tone decisive.
“We fight back,” Nora said firmly. “We’ll challenge their evidence in court, but we also need to get ahead of the narrative. A proactive public relations strategy will be crucial.”
Emma nodded. “Let’s do it. I want updates on every front—legal, PR, and security. We’ve already endured one attack; we won’t be caught off guard again.”
Over the next few days, Emma threw herself into the fight. Meetings with lawyers, strategy sessions with her PR team, and long hours reviewing documents consumed her schedule.
The twins, Lucy and Liam, were thankfully unaware of the chaos, their laughter a welcome reprieve during Emma’s brief moments at home.
Thomas, still recovering in the hospital, remained a steady source of support. They spoke daily, his voice on the other end of the line a reminder of the partnership that had carried them through so many trials.
“You’re handling this better than I could,” Thomas said one evening, his tone filled with admiration.
“I’m handling it because I have to,” Emma replied. “But I miss having you by my side.”
“I’ll be there soon,” Thomas promised. “Just don’t forget to lean on the team. You don’t have to do this alone.”
His words bolstered her resolve, but as Emma ended the call and returned to her work, a sense of unease lingered. Garrison’s aggressive tactics felt personal, as if someone were orchestrating a campaign specifically to destroy her foundation.
A week into the legal battle, Emma’s fears were confirmed. Nora’s team uncovered evidence that the Garrison Foundation had been in contact with the rival nonprofit that had previously targeted Emma.
It was a coordinated effort to undermine her foundation’s credibility, and it fueled Emma’s determination to fight back.
But just as they were gaining ground, another crisis struck.
Emma was in her office, reviewing a draft of the foundation’s public statement, when her assistant, Grace, burst in, her face pale.
“Emma, there’s been an earthquake,” Grace said, her voice trembling. “Near one of our project sites in Southeast Asia. The epicenter was close to the hospital we’re partnering with for the clinical trial.”
Emma’s heart dropped. “What’s the damage?”
“We don’t know yet,” Grace replied. “Reports are still coming in, but the initial news isn’t good. There are power outages, structural damage… and injuries.”
