Love by the Contract

Chapter 136

Chapter 136

The sterile smell of antiseptic filled the air as Emma sat by Thomas’s bedside, her fingers lightly brushing his motionless hand. The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was a constant reminder of his fragile condition. His normally vibrant face was pale, the energy and fire she loved so much drained away. She hadn’t left his side since the moment he was admitted, juggling her responsibilities at the foundation through phone calls and late-night emails while silently praying for answers.

Emma opened the small leather-bound journal she had purchased from the hospital gift shop. Writing had always been a refuge, a way to make sense of the chaos around her. Now, more than ever, she needed that clarity. The first blank page stared back at her, and with a shaky hand, she began to write.

Day 1

Thomas is here, but it feels like he’s a thousand miles away. The doctors are running tests, but no one knows what’s wrong. I don’t know how long I can keep up this balancing act—running the foundation while staying here. But I can’t leave him. Not when he needs me.

She paused, wiping a tear that had rolled onto her cheek, before turning her attention back to Thomas. His hand felt warm but limp in her grasp. She pressed her lips to his knuckles.

By the third day, exhaustion weighed heavily on Emma. The foundation’s board was demanding answers about the cyber-attack and the newly launched cyber-security initiative. Her decision to fund the project had been met with praise, but the operational details were overwhelming. Calls with legal teams, security experts, and public relations firms became her new normal, all while she kept a vigilant eye on Thomas.

Alex stepped into the hospital room that evening, his familiar presence offering a rare moment of relief. He held two cups of coffee, handing one to Emma with a soft smile. “Thought you could use this.”

“Thanks,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“How’s he doing?” Alex asked, gesturing toward Thomas.

Emma shook her head, her eyes betraying her worry. “No change. They’ve ruled out some illnesses, but every test comes back inconclusive. It’s like they’re chasing shadows.”

Alex placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “You’re doing everything you can. And you’re not alone, Emma. If you need me to take on some of the foundation work, just say the word.”

Emma gave him a small, grateful smile. “I might take you up on that.”

The turning point came on the fifth day. A specialist, Dr. Elena Moreau, arrived from a neighboring hospital, her reputation for solving complex medical mysteries preceding her. She was a tall woman with sharp eyes and a demeanor that radiated confidence.

“I’ve reviewed Thomas’s case,” Dr. Moreau said as she entered the room, addressing both Emma and the attending physician. “There’s something unusual about his symptoms. The pattern suggests exposure to a toxin rather than an illness.”

Emma’s heart skipped a beat. “A toxin? You mean… poison?”

Dr. Moreau nodded. “Potentially. I’ve ordered a specific panel of tests to confirm. If my suspicions are correct, we’ll need to act quickly to neutralize it.”

The weight of her words hit Emma like a freight train. Poison. The idea that someone could have intentionally harmed Thomas was almost too much to bear. She gripped the edge of the chair, struggling to keep her emotions in check.

That night, Emma returned to her journal. The words flowed from her pen as she tried to process the revelation.

Day 5

Poison. The thought keeps looping in my mind. Who would do this? Why Thomas? I keep replaying the events of the last few weeks, wondering if I missed something. I should have protected him better.

Tears blurred the ink as she wrote, her guilt and frustration spilling onto the pages. She closed the journal and set it aside, her eyes drifting back to Thomas. His chest rose and fell steadily, but she couldn’t shake the image of someone deliberately trying to harm him.

“I’ll find out who did this,” she vowed, her voice trembling with resolve. “And I’ll make sure they pay.”

The next morning, Dr. Moreau returned with the results. Her expression was a mix of relief and urgency.

“The tests confirmed my suspicion,” she announced. “We found traces of a rare toxin in his system—one not commonly seen in hospital cases. It’s used in certain industrial applications but can also be weaponized in small doses.”

Emma felt her knees go weak. Alex, who had joined her for the meeting, quickly steadied her.

“Is it treatable?” Emma asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Yes,” Dr. Moreau said with a reassuring nod. “We’ve already started him on the appropriate treatment. His body has been fighting back, which is a good sign. Now that we know what we’re dealing with, his chances of recovery are high.”

Relief flooded through Emma, but it was quickly overshadowed by anger. “Who could have done this? How did he come into contact with something like that?”

Dr. Moreau hesitated. “That’s not for me to say, but I’d recommend reporting this to the authorities. This toxin doesn’t appear accidentally.”

Emma nodded, her mind racing. The foundation’s enemies—the rival pharmaceutical company, the disgruntled investors, the saboteur within her team—any one of them could be responsible. But she needed proof.

Later that evening, Emma sat in the hospital’s dimly lit cafeteria with Alex. The coffee in her hands had gone cold, but she didn’t notice. Her mind was consumed by the implications of what they’d learned.

“This can’t be a coincidence,” she said finally. “First the cyber-attack, now this? Someone’s targeting us.”

Alex nodded, his expression grim. “I agree. And whoever it is, they’re playing a dangerous game.”

“We need to find out who’s behind this,” Emma said, her voice hardening. “I won’t let them get away with this.”

“We will,” Alex said firmly. “But right now, you need to focus on Thomas. Let me handle some of the digging. I’ll loop in the private investigator you used before.”

Emma hesitated, but the exhaustion in her bones made her realize she couldn’t do this alone. “Okay,” she said. “But keep me updated on everything.”

That night, as Emma sat by Thomas’s side, she opened her journal once more.

Day 6

We have answers, but they only lead to more questions. Someone did this to Thomas. Someone wanted to hurt him—or worse. I can’t rest until I know who it was. But for now, I’ll stay here, watching over him, praying that he wakes up soon.

She closed the journal and reached for Thomas’s hand. His fingers twitched lightly in response, and for the first time in days, she allowed herself to hope
