Chapter 123
Chapter 123
The rain outside streaked against the tall glass windows of the foundation’s boardroom, casting blurred reflections of the city skyline within. Emma sat at the head of the table, her fingers interlocked and resting against her chin, her thoughts churning as Dr. Annika Groves methodically laid out the potential consequences of accepting Verdi Ventures’ proposal.
“This kind of partnership isn’t uncommon,” Annika explained, flipping through a binder of case studies. “But what stands out here is the level of control they’re requesting. Shared decision-making may sound collaborative, but in practice, it often tips the scales in favor of the entity with more resources.”
Thomas, seated beside Emma, leaned forward. “How do we counter that? Is there a way to protect the foundation’s mission without losing the funding we need to expand?”
Annika adjusted her glasses, her sharp gaze locking onto him. “That depends on how much you’re willing to compromise. If you insist on retaining full control over pricing, access, and research findings, Verdi Ventures might walk away.”
Emma’s voice broke the tense silence. “And if we don’t insist? What happens then?”
Annika sighed, her tone softening. “Best-case scenario? You deliver groundbreaking treatments but find yourself limited in ensuring they’re equitably distributed. Worst-case? Verdi prioritizes profitability over accessibility, and your foundation becomes little more than a face for their corporate interests.”
Emma rubbed her temples, the enormity of the decision weighing on her. “So either we risk alienating an investor who could fast-track our initiatives or we risk betraying the very people we’re trying to help.”
Thomas reached out, placing a hand on hers. “We’ve faced worse dilemmas, Emma. We’ll find a way through this.”
She looked at him, gratitude flickering in her tired eyes. “I hope you’re right.”
As the meeting adjourned, Emma retreated to her office, the rain outside echoing her inner turmoil. She paced the room, her mind a whirlwind of competing thoughts. The promise of unlimited funding and global reach was tantalizing, but every time she considered Verdi’s conditions, a voice in her head whispered warnings about what they stood to lose.
Thomas entered, closing the door behind him. “You’re thinking in circles again,” he said gently.
Emma managed a wry smile. “It’s hard not to. There’s so much at stake.”
He crossed the room and leaned against her desk, arms folded. “Let’s break it down. What’s your gut telling you?”
“That Verdi Ventures isn’t trustworthy,” she admitted. “But my head is screaming at me not to turn down this kind of opportunity.”
Thomas nodded. “Then we take a step back and consider the alternatives. If Verdi walks, we keep going at our current pace. Slower, but on our terms. If we sign with them, we accelerate—but potentially lose the very independence that makes us who we are.”
Emma exhaled deeply, her shoulders slumping. “It’s like choosing between two impossible options.”
Thomas’s voice softened. “Not impossible. Just hard. And if there’s anyone who can navigate this, it’s you.”
Before Emma could respond, her phone buzzed on the desk. She glanced at the screen, her heart skipping when she saw Alex’s name.
“Alex?” she answered, the unease in her voice evident.
“Emma,” Alex’s voice was shaky, frantic. “We’ve been in an accident. It’s Lucy—she’s hurt.”
