Love by the Contract

Chapter 115

Chapter 115

In the secure confines of their foundation’s war room, Emma and her team gathered around a cluttered table that bore the weight of numerous files, laptops, and cups of coffee. The atmosphere was electric with determination and the pursuit of justice as they dove into the labyrinthine depths of BioGen Solutions' corporate malfeasance.

“Look at this,” Joan pointed out on her laptop, highlighting a complex diagram that mapped out the connections between BioGen executives and several regulatory officials. “We’ve got definitive links showing repeated payments to these officials around the same dates as major safety approvals were granted.”

Emma leaned over to examine the screen, her mind racing as the implications sank in. “This is systemic corruption. It’s not just sloppy work; it’s orchestrated deceit. How far does this go?” she wondered aloud, her voice tinged with both anger and resolve.

Thomas, who had been sifting through another stack of documents, looked up, holding a thick file. “It gets worse. I found falsified safety records. Look at these discrepancies.” He laid out the documents where test results had clearly been altered, showing negative side effects that were later scrubbed from the final reports submitted to health authorities.

The room buzzed with outrage and renewed energy as the team realized the scope of BioGen’s wrongdoing. Emma stood up, feeling the weight of responsibility on her shoulders. “We need to expose all of this. It’s not just about winning our case anymore. This is about protecting future patients and ensuring such blatant disregard for human life is punished.”

Over the next few days, Emma’s team worked relentlessly, piecing together evidence, corroborating testimonies from insiders, and tracking the flow of money that fueled the corrupt practices. Their investigation revealed a network so entrenched that it seemed almost invincible.

However, the breakthrough came when an anonymous insider agreed to meet with Emma and provide physical evidence that could irrevocably prove BioGen’s manipulation of clinical trial results. The meeting was set in a discreet location, away from prying eyes, to protect the whistleblower’s identity.

Emma and Thomas arrived early, the weight of anticipation heavy in the air. Minutes turned into hours, and the whistleblower did not show. Concerned, Emma tried calling the burner phone number they had been given, but it went straight to voicemail.

“This isn’t like our contact,” Thomas said, checking his own phone for any missed messages or signals. “They knew the risks, but they were committed to exposing the truth.”

Emma paced, her mind racing with possibilities—cold feet, a change of heart, or something worse. “We need to find them. This isn’t just about our case; their life could be in danger,” she asserted, her protective instincts kicking in.

They decided to split up and retrace the potential routes their contact might have taken to the meeting. As they left, Emma felt a chilling sense of urgency. This was a race against time, and the stakes were life and death.

Thomas checked local surveillance feeds and public transport cams while Emma liaised with a few trusted sources in law enforcement to put out a discreet alert for their missing whistleblower. The hours ticked by with no sign, increasing their worry.

Meanwhile, Joan and the legal team back at the office prepared to leverage the situation. They drafted motions and prepared subpoenas based on the information they already had, ready to move as soon as the additional evidence was secured.

As night fell, Emma received a call from one of her contacts. “Emma, we might have something. A person fitting your contact’s description was seen entering a building downtown around the time of your meeting. But they haven’t come out, at least not through any of the main exits.”

Emma relayed the information to Thomas, and they converged on the location, a nondescript office building that seemed unrelated to any of their prior intelligence on BioGen. The building was quiet, most businesses closed for the day, but one light was still on in a basement storage area.

With their hearts pounding, Emma and Thomas accessed the building, making their way to the basement. They found the door ajar, the room beyond dimly lit. Inside, they discovered their contact unconscious, a victim of an apparent assault.

“Call an ambulance, and make sure they have a police escort. We can’t take any chances,” Emma instructed Thomas, who was already on the phone, barking orders.

As emergency services took their whistleblower to safety, Emma and Thomas searched the room. There, hidden in a concealed safe, was the evidence they had been promised—hard drives and documents that could change the course of their legal battle.

Relief washed over Emma, mixed with a fierce protectiveness for the brave soul who had risked everything to bring the truth to light. As they handed the evidence over to their legal team, Emma felt a resolve of steel within her.

“We’re going to win this,” she stated with conviction, looking at Thomas. “And we’re going to make sure this never happens again.”
