Chapter 37: Practice Makes Perfect
Chapter 37: Practice Makes Perfect
"Mixi, it's wonderful that you can think this way. You can start by making one outfit for me, and after Fila, Penny, and Leon return, you can take their measurements for custom pieces. I think everyone will be very happy."
As soon as Li Wei finished speaking, several lines of information silently appeared before him.
[Professional Tailor *** has triggered the Monthly Family Main Quest - Make one winter outfit and one pair of straw sandals for each family member. She needs approval from at least three family members to join the Monthly Family Main Quest. Otherwise, this month she can only assist you and help complete your Family Main Quest.]
[You have agreed]
[Professional Craftsman *** has agreed]
[Professional Chef *** has agreed]
[New Player *** is still within the three-day protection period and has not triggered a Monthly Family Main Quest. They are not eligible to vote and cannot receive this information.]
[Professional Tailor *** has officially started the Monthly Family Main Quest. After completing the quest, she will receive 5 Family Contribution points.]
[Your Monthly Family Main Quest is being adjusted. Originally requiring two people to complete, it now only requires one person. Difficulty has increased. After completing the quest, you will receive 15 Family Contribution points.]
[Since Professional Tailor ***'s Monthly Family Main Quest was not scheduled and directed by the Family Head, this month's Family Head will not receive related benefits.]——
Damn!
So this is where the trap was hidden.
Li Wei stared in stunned silence, suddenly remembering how when he first arrived, Penny had bossed him around constantly. Could it have been for the same reason?
Impressive. Veteran players are truly impressive. After clearing this round, if he encounters similar quests next time, he should be able to pull off something like this too.
Additionally, this method of triggering quests mid-way essentially meant snatching benefits right from the Family Head's mouth. Penny would probably despise this Mixi to death.
While Li Wei's thoughts continued to wander, Mixi had already given him a sweet smile and briskly departed.
Her objective had been achieved.
——
By evening, while Li Wei was making more scarecrows for the Wheat Field, Penny finally returned—the last one back. She hadn't even come back for lunch at noon.
Somehow she had woven an enormous carrying basket, secured to her body with ropes. The basket contained some Iron Ore. It didn't look like much, but it had to weigh at least a hundred pounds.
Sweat streamed down her face like small rivers, her hair stuck together in clumps, her face covered in soot and darkened by the sun. Hunched over from the weight, she appeared even more frail and petite.
She was really pushing herself hard. Li Wei hurried forward to help, setting the basket on the ground. Honestly, he actually wanted to participate in the iron mining work too. If nothing else, if he could obtain a Miner Card, that would obviously be fantastic.
Unfortunately, this particular line of work was completely monopolized by Penny at the moment. Unless he could complete this month's Monthly Main Quest ahead of schedule, or seize the Family Head position next month, or if next month's Family Head assigned tasks focused on the Blacksmith Shop, only then would he have a chance to mine the Iron Deposit.
"Thank you!"
Penny expressed her gratitude but didn't say anything more. Even Fila remained silent, including the veteran player Mixi. Ever since she received her Monthly Main Quest, it was like she had become a completely different person—taciturn and reserved. From start to finish, she hadn't exchanged words with Fila or Leon, let alone with Penny at this moment.
Of course, everyone was used to it by now. Because casual conversation could really easily trigger new scenarios.
So the new player Leon seemed quite uncomfortable, appearing very restrained. However, he must have sensed something, as his gaze kept drifting toward Li Wei, his fellow countryman, hoping to glean some information or support from him.
After dinner, Fila, Penny, and Mixi—the three women—unceremoniously returned to the room to rest. Truthfully, three people in there was already a bit cramped.
Leon sat by the fire, looking like he wanted to speak but hesitating.
Li Wei didn't say anything either, just tossed him a Wooden Spear and took him on a patrol around the inside and outside of the Camp. Finally, they blocked the Camp's entrance with obstacles.
"I, I think we probably need a proper gate."
Leon suddenly spoke up, somewhat stammering. This was normal, but his words essentially triggered a scenario. Well, almost—because right now, building a gate wasn't more important than fishing.
It wasn't like Mixi needing to sew winter clothes; that held higher priority.
"We'll consider it when the opportunity arises. Right now, we need more food to get through the long winter. Some things need to be prioritized by urgency and importance."
Li Wei looked meaningfully at Leon as he spoke.
Returning to the fireside, Li Wei routinely began whittling Wooden Arrows. Actually, he already had plenty of Fletched Arrows now; even for evening training, he used Fletched Arrows. But he still maintained the habit of carving Wooden Arrows with his small knife. He didn't care much about the finished product; rather, he focused on sensing the balance and center of gravity during the whittling process, building technical reserves for making more standardized Arrow Shafts in the future.
Yes, this was work that truly tested one's skill. The straightness of the Arrow Shaft, its smoothness, its center of gravity—all these required careful, deliberate cuts, one after another. How to apply force with his hands while carving—these weren't things that could be solved with just a few words.
It required time and prolonged practice.
Only through familiarity born of practice could one master it.
After uneventfully finishing ten Arrow Shafts and then uneventfully shooting ten Fletched Arrows, Li Wei finally turned to look at Leon, who appeared deep in thought but was probably actually completely bewildered.
"Aren't you tired? You should get some rest while you can."
"But, but the room..." Leon seemed somewhat embarrassed, still carrying the inherent restraint of a newcomer and certain virtues particular to their homeland.
"Brother, we're all in the same boat."
Li Wei patted Leon on the shoulder, pulled him along, and entered the house. He found any available space and lay down. Seriously, would those three bitches yield even an inch in critical moments just because of gender differences?
What a load of nonsense. When it comes to your own interests, you absolutely cannot give them up.
Squeezing together makes it warmer anyway. Autumn had already arrived. While the days were still quite hot, the nights had turned very cold, with heavy dew. Only a fool would stay outside—
Unfortunately, Leon turned out to be that fool. He ultimately escaped back outside.
After a good night's sleep, when Li Wei woke up, it was already broad daylight outside. Fila, Penny, and Mixi were no longer in the house.
Fila needed to get up very early to prepare meals; this was fixed within her Monthly Main Quest. But exactly how it was calculated, Li Wei didn't know.
Penny had probably set out before dawn with dry rations and water. She was pushing herself desperately to obtain that One-Star Miner Card as soon as possible.
Mixi was also busy weaving straw sandals.
As for Leon, he finally got the chance to catch a short sleep inside the house.
This would be yet another utterly ordinary day, devoid of any surprises or unexpected events, filled only with monotonous, tedious, and exhausting work.
However, Li Wei was in good spirits and had a positive mindset.
After all, he didn't plan to compete for the Family Head position next, nor did he have a particularly strong competitive drive. In fact, he quite enjoyed this kind of life.
So he wouldn't push himself to the extreme like Penny, sacrificing his Healthy status just to obtain the Strength he desired.
If possible, Li Wei felt he would be willing to stay in this world for a lifetime.
This brilliantly clear blue sky, the bright and warm sunlight, the lush valleys and forests—every scene seemed to resonate with the strings of his heart, making him find joy in it all.
